Dani Alves

City have Sagna and Zabaleta there. Arsenal have Debuchy and Chambers. Liverpool Nvm... Chelsea could do with him if they think about making Azpilicueta a permanent left-back although Alves wouldn't exactly be Jose's cup of tea. I would rather have him than Valencia mind you but he has severely regressed as a player esp with his loss of pace.

Felipe Luis not working out then?

Barely got a look in, in the EPL. Only has one substitute appearance in the league and 2 starts in the CL against weaker teams. Not sure what's going on there but understandable as Azpilicueta is one of the league's best defensive full-backs who provides excellent cover for Hazard who doesn't do much tracking back. He is also a classic Mourinho type of player.

He could easily end up at Spurs as well. Can't see any of the bigger boys being in for him as he's regressed quite a bit & might be on massive wages. Liverpool might be worth a punt.

Might also be worth a gamble by us - if he's on acceptable wages and willing to compete with Rafael. A lot will depend on Rafael's form & thus far he's been getting back to his best IMO. So, no thanks.

I'm just glad, that he's not rumoured to join us.

Thanks for the reply.
Was wondering why he didn't get a mention even... Wasn't he supposed to be very good at Atletico Madrid? Both going forward and defending?
One would think he is just trying to adapt in training, and that they plan to play with him and Azpilicueta on each side.

He will be asking for pretty significant wages as it would potentially be his last paycheck and he is a big name. I wouldn't mind him as a back-up to Rafael due to Rafael's injury proneness and Alves can also be a good mentor for Rafael. However, Alves doesn't strike me as the kind of player who would be happy with a back-up role to the first team.

Always struck me as a more attacking full-back than a defensive one. He is good defensively but not at the level of Azpilicueta, Chelsea's players' player of the year, which isn't aiding Luis esp with the extremely offensive Hazard on the flank. Hazard and Azpi have also alluded to this and Hazard has claimed he loves playing in front of Azpilicueta who both speak French and have history in the French Ligue.

Azpilicueta said: "I played against him in France and when I came here we knew each other a little bit.

"The relationship is good because we're more or less the same age and we speak French.

"I know every time I give him the ball he's going to do something different."

Perhaps the plan was to play Ivanovic more centrally with Terry getting on with his age and shifting Azpilicueta to the right-back role. However, both Terry and Ivanovic have been pretty good individually so far and it doesn't make sense to tinker with an unbeaten team at the top of the league. Filipe Luis will have to bide his time and wait for injuries/suspension/rotation to get a look-in into this team at the moment.

How do you rate your current RB options right now?

Brilliant. Lahm first choice, Rafinha as an attacking fullback and Boateng as a defensive fullback are great back-ups. I expect us to continue to play with that strange back three though, which means Lahm will continue to play that right midfield/right wingback hybrid role and Rafinha is pretty much a back-up to move from the attacking 334 line-up with Robben out wide to a more defensive 352 with Rafinha out wide.

The main reason why I don't want Alves at the club is that Pep could come up with the stupid idea to keep Lahm in central midfield even if Schweinsteiger, Thiago and Martinez return form injury. I'd hate that.

Geez the embarrassment of riches you guys have in midfield... Also have Gaudino and Hojbjerg coming up as well. Ridiculous. Pity about the injuries though

I'd take him, depending on wage demands. Rotate him and Rafael, plenty of games for both considering Rafaels injury problems.

He's regressed in recent years. Can't see him doing well in the EPL with his lazy defence, leaving miles of space behind him and unmarked wingers. Though on the attacking side, he will be an upgrade to most teams out there.

Chelsea were linked with Coleman earlier this week so could be in the market for Alves with a view to moving Ivanovic to central defence. I think LVG would like him as the right wing back for us, Rafael could learn from him.

I wouldn't mind him here as a squad player, he would be good enough cover for rafa plus he is massively experienced he has dropped off abit in recent times but he is still a decent enough player to do a job.

He looks like a complete busted flush. No thanks.

I'd much rather Rafael, but if he has another injury hit season we do have to start looking at alternatives. As good as he usually is, if he can't be depended on we have to bring in someone else. It's no different to the situation Jones, Smalling and Evans are in now.

He would cost an absolute fortune in terms of wages and on recent performances for club and country he'd come nowhere close to justifying it.

Alves is done. He's been painfully poor for well over a year now unfortunately- just living off his past reputation.

Not the kind of signing this club should be making. We should be able to identify quality cover and competition for Rafael via our scouting system. We've still got money to spend elsewhere, we shouldn't be wasting good wages on a 31 year old that no longer has anything to prove. Not a United signing.

Hopefully not to us. I guess it'll be either Liverpool or Spurs.

I agree with the thoughts about him being finished in regards to being a World Class fullback \ Wingback, It does scare me however that I could honestly see him ending up here, Rafael is playing excellent and should be the number one choice but we don't have any sort of back up for WHEN Rafa does in fact go down injured, There are a number of alternatives id rather us sign then Alves though.

The negatives associated to Alves are very high; He is not at the level he once was, Will be on high wages, Our team is already massively top heavy which he would contribute to and I would imagine he will not be happy to sit on the bench.

After this Summer's Transfer Window I wouldn't be surprised by anything anymore however

I was coming with a "no no no" myself. He's never played defence in his life it seems. His age isnt really a worry considering he's built lean. I don't know about his injury record though.
Just checked he is actually 31 thought he'd be a couple of years older. Damn, then I can see us going for him. Wouldn't schock me if we let Varela join RM permanently and signed Dani Alves! Would fit in perfectly into our transfer policy of the last 3 years :wenger:

He would be an excellent back-up option, but he has indeed severely regressed unfortunately. Was never that solid defensively either, amazingly effective going forward though.

He had some very good defensive Clasicos when asked to curb his forward play vs Ronaldo but his USP- the stamina to be able to own the entire right flank both defensively and offensively has vanished.

All too easy to picture him here next season, standing hands on hips after conceding a goal, wearing 3 layers of gloves in a Winter match away to Stoke. If we're willing to pay silly wages then we prob deserve that.

Agree with this. I always refer back to a game I saw him play against Valencia where he barely attacked at all.

But defensively he was the pick of Barcelona's players on the day.

Proved me wrong, because I had him down as a player who couldnt defend but it was clear that if he was asked to do that job he could do it. Its just tactically he's asked to be as far forward as a right winger

Yeah, I third that.

It's definitely his stamina loss that's hit him hard. He has lost some pace too but that was never that important to his game.

He needs to stop lumping in crosses too, not sure if it's under instruction but he's better than that, great passer for a right back.

His contract expires at the end of the season but there's a clause for it to be extended for another season. Conflicting reports on whether it automatically extends based on his appearances though, or if it's Alves' choice or if it's Barcelona's choice.
