Dani Alves

Express reporting we've got a preliminary agreement with Alves for him to join at the end of the season. Hmmm...not sure if he's really that much better than Rafael?
DANI ALVES has an agreement with Manchester United that will see him move to England at the end of the season.
Alves is in the final year of his deal at Barcelona and has not been offered fresh terms at the Camp Nou.

The player's agent said this week that they would consider all options before making a decision in December or January.

But FIFA agent Francois Gallardo claims that a deal has already been agreed that will see Alves move to Old Trafford.

Speaking to Spanish television show Neox, Gallardo said: "The player will leave Barcelona next season. He has signed a preliminary agreement with Manchester United."

The news is sure to come as a blow to both Chelsea and Liverpool who both had hopes of signing the Brazilian on a free transfer.

Earlier this week, Alves' agent Dinorah Santana said: "If the club [Barcelona] wanted to renew Alves they would have done it already. I would not do things they way they have.

"We will leave the suitors until December or January... then we'll decide who to marry."

I've seen this being reported on BBC in the gossip column earlier. I feel like this could be true, we need a good right back because Rafael alone won't be enough.

Might be something in the rumours about LVG not rating Rafa if this turns out to be true. Certainly wouldn't have signed a player like Alves under Fergie but who knows what we'll do these days.

I'd have a fit Rafael ahead of Alves now and he would be on too much for him to be cover. Would rather a younger option that doesn't mind not playing every week.

I think if he is coming to be a squad player on reasonable wages then fine, but I don't want him starting over Rafael. IMO Alves is nowhere near the player he was at his peak, I think his motivation has been lost recently.

When's the last time we only paid someone a reasonable wage? he's apparently on £150,000 a week at the moment, if you believe the press even PSG wouldn't meet his wage demands during the Summer so he stayed in Spain.

Would seem stupid to invest money and patience in Rafa only to replace him with an older, softer player on a more expensive contract.

Rebuilding process requires signing hungry players, willing to make their name in football and who are or will be at their peak in coming years, once we come back to the top. That's the whole point of building a new team. I don't believe LVG would sign a 32 year old downgrading player to his new project, for a position where we need a top and reliable player, which Rafael isn't due to his injuries.

So LvG doesn't rate Rafa, and in turn he goes out and signs Alves? :wenger:

Odd how he's playing him, yet isn't supposed to rate him. Very un Van Gaal behaviour. Raf is pretty much an automatic pick & has certainly been one of our better players this season. Personally wouldn't want Alves at United, he's a bit past his prime & very suspect defensively. But if Van Gaal sees the need who am I to judge.

I believe an Andy Mitten article said recently that Rafael was given the opportunity to leave if he pleased; a sign van Gaal wasn't crazy about him, but since then Rafael has really put in some brilliant performances. I'm sure he's growing on the manager, he'd be mad to not rate him after seeing what he's capable of.

Can't say I've many if any doubt about LVG but if that's true then I think he's poor judgment, Rafael is perfect for a back four or five not to mention a brilliant player capable of being world class.

Doesn't make any sense at all, a hefty wage for declining player when we could get a younger player, with room for improvement and for half the worth of his contract. Not a smart way to build a team and not sustainable either.

He's one of the players I dislike most, and Rafael is my favorite player. If we sell Rafael (or put him on bench) for this annoying diving twat then I'll go crazy.

I'm 100% confident that the story is b/s

I've never seen Gallardo get anything right
I agree with you. Not buying this one bit. Probably his agent using United's name to get a new deal or something with some other club. But getting him at 32 doesn't make sense to me.

For once I'm pleased ballbag has squashed this.

He'd be nothing but a journey man looking for a pay check. He's done at the highest level.

Considering how many injuries Rafael suffer and his occasional feck ups then we should consider a Right back whose more then a cover. Whether that player is Dani Alves remains in question

Why would we be signing a 31 year old?
Makes sense to me. We only have one right back, who is on the younger side, and has not proven he can stay fit for a whole season. Personally I would like an older player in that position. Means we aren't chucking out Rafael but he still gets great competition and has good cover for when he's injured and vice versa.

For me it makes sense because I like Rafael and think he's a great player. For those who don't or think that he won't cut it because of his frequent injuries, someone like Coleman or a very solid right back (albeit an expensive one) would be the way to go.

I'd rather have Di Siclio (good age and can play on either flank)
Or Coleman or Clyne but a fit and motivated alvez on a free is a tempting punt to take
Can't disagree with that. Heading into the 2015/16 season I would like to see three very competent fullbacks with one offering sufficient competition for both fullback positions and Clyne or De Sciglio would certainly provide that. They would be our go to cover right or left back in Shaw or Rafael's absence even though both would be well capable of staking a claim in the first team for a duration of time.

It would mean Rojo, Blackett, Blind and Valencia would merely be emergency last resorts as cover at both right and leftback. It's better if they have a set position where they can focus on, opposed to having their development stunted or form effected (like others have). Chelsea have Ivanovic, Felipe and Azpilicueta as their three fullback options and that exemplifies what I would like for a top club competing on all fronts (like we will hopefully be next season).

According to rumours in the Spanish press, Alves will soon sign a new contract with Barcelona that will expire in either 2016 or 2017.

Fine with me, he is not good enough defensively anyway.

I'd honestly rather we signed Nathaniel Clyne to provide competition for Rafael.

Considering how much money Southampton took from us for Shaw then we can presume that he'll probably cost us a bomb

What about Santon? He's at the end of his contract, he's young and he can cover both rear flanks.

Not my preference and I'm not Santon's biggest fans, but there are other options to just Clyne obviously. I was clamouring for his signature in June, but I would have liked us to sign Sagna before he went to City. Someone who primarily plays at RB, but is competent at LB also.
