Dani Alves

Fabio and Rafael next season? Naah I don't think they'll feature before 2009/2010

I hate this myth here about Alves being a shit defender and how we will suffer at the back because of him.

He is a better attacker than a defender but doesn't mean he is a shit defender. He suits our style imo..
Agreed. He or Miguel/Lahm will be signed

But I dont want us to sign him because he is a cnut and and another diver.

I hope we sign Lahm.
Me too. I want a German at United

Yeah, I'm definitely not saying that Alves could be bad for us. It would be hard to see how that would be possible.

There is something to be said for Brown's height at the back, but Alves is tall too, and that would in fact make me less nervous than if we signed Lahm at right-back, meaning we'd have two short full-backs... though frankly with the attacking prowess of either Lahm or Alves the opposition would have a job stopping us from scoring a hatful so can't see it hurting us too much.

I guess I just hope we sign a top cock striker first and foremost.

Lahm is 5 ft 7'' - alves is 5 ft 7.5''

Alves is a non-starter. Even if Sevilla decide to sell there is no way he would come to Manchester. Alves will - injuries permitting - find himself at one of the Spanish giants in the next few weeks. He is one of the best youngish stars in the game today. Leaving Spain would be a step down for him. It is all moot though. Alves announced weeks ago that he is determined to stay in La Liga. On that basis there is no way we’d make a bid for him.

bizarre statement.

bizarre statement.

It isn't bizarre at all. The Spanish giants can provide a vastly superior lifestyle - and only marginally less wages to us - a offer from England has little to offer. Especially in terms of European competition, our prospects of European sucess is pretty similar to Barcelona imo.

Alves coming to OT would mean learning a new language, developing an understanding our a new league, adapting to life at OT, never a easy task as well as settling in Chesire which means a Brazilian getting a serious lack of sun on his back to boot.

But Alves soundings about the importance of securing financial security for his family could swing in our favour given the huge wages we are now paying for our "stars".

none of what you said implies a 'step down'. not in economic terms, not in footballing terms...

like i said, bizarre.

I´d rather see us going forward than defend. Always have and always will. We did get a good result in Barca but I can´t say I was very proud of the way we performed. We are Manchester United and shouldn´t be afraid of noone. It´s easy to say but I do believe playing the United way is more important than winning trophies. 1999 was perfect to me, winning it all in style. Still very proud of our team, we do play it the right way 99% of the time. Wouldn´t mind getting rid of that 1 % of Liverpool-playing-style though:nono:

Playing with attacking style doesn't mean that you don't have to have any players who can defend on the pitch though.

I love that we play attacking football but IMO it is very important to still have defence who can defend too, it's their main job after all. Good defence gives more freedom to our attackers.

How does Lahm compare to Alves offensively?

Alves is good enough in the last third to be one of the best wingers in the world. Being Brazilian gives him the excuse to play as a fullback - where he has very little talent. There are times when Alves sets up multiple goals per match - and he does it because he completely neglects defending.

Lahm is more like Evra. Very good going forward and sets up a few goals but not a midfielder.

Sevilla wingback Daniel Alves has reiterated his desire to move in the summer, leading Manchester United to step up their interest…

The Brazil international was on the verge of signing for Chelsea last summer before Sevilla raised his price to ₤25 million, causing Blues owner Roman Abramovich pulled the plug on negotiations.

The 25-year-old had also been close to joining Liverpool in previous years, but on those occasions too the Rojiblancos priced their star defender beyond his suitors’ reach.

And now United could swoop in and complete the move their two biggest rivals could not, as Sir Alex Ferguson seeks to bolster his option on the right side of defence.

The Red Devils will face stiff competition, however, as new Barcelona coach Josep Guardiola has targeted the former Bahia man to replace Gianluca Zambrotta, who is likely to return to Italy.

With no lack of options, Alves is keen to complete a deal quickly following Sevilla's failure to qualify for the Champions League.

He said: "I really want to leave now and I hope that everything will be finalised as soon as possible."

Yes please. SAF will sort out any defensive problems he might have.

He is very good but the thing is we wont be spending 25 or more on a RB when we still have Neville and other players that can play there if needed.

The only way we can spend that money is knowing the new boy will be our first choice RB and we have listened from Fergie that Neville will still be our first choice RB next season and he just couldnt get into the side right now because the form of the defence has been so great that it was pretty hard to drop any of them to put back our captain.

Off he goes...

MADRID, June 7 (Reuters) - Barcelona have agreed a deal to sign Brazil fullback Daniel Alves from Sevilla, Spanish media reported on Saturday.
The 25-year-old international is set to move on a four-year contract for a fee of 29.5 million euros ($46.04 million), rising to 36 million euros depending on appearances and results.

What are you on about Skeeta?

The Prem is the best league in the world. And is only getting stronger, quickly.

Man feckin Citeh with a 20 million punds Brazillian centre forward (Jo) says it all really...

Interviewed by Sid Lowe in the Guardian today, good to see he has a sense of humour - I quote:

Sid Lowe: So, who is your favourite English football team?

Dani Alves: [In English] Is a good question … in this moment Manchester …

SL: You mean City, right?

DA: That's the one. Hahahaha! No. Manchester United.

the man has taste

interesting to see that he thinks we're better as a team without ronaldo - i agree with this

also robinho was a mistake because of the physical side - i think david silva and players like that would struggle as well

I would prefer to sign a player to cover a role we actually need. For example a creative midfielder to play near the area and feed our strike force.

besides, i don't tolerate his actitude at all.

But you can't deny his quality.

Well he's finally agreed a new deal. It was bound to happen eventually and Barca are not going to lose him now.

He is often the highest & widest Barca player, he's not a fullback in any conventional sense - he hardly defends at all.

I think he would be more recognised at a different club. He was Sevilla's best player as a full back before (granted Poulsen covered his ass)

Huge huge cheat but what a player. Surely he must be covering the maximum distance at the club? he's just up and down the pitch for 90 mins! Great engine and an incredible amount of assists as well.

He doesnt have to defend, that's why he hardly does but i wouldnt be unfair to him. He bust a gut to get not just up the pitch but back when he needs to. He has some great habits in my opinion. When a team look likely to break Alves has this great skill of catching up to them and doing just enough to foul them without being too blatent about it. Allowing the team to reassemble and break when they win it back.

For me Alves is one of the best players in the world. His link up is fantastic, his engine is incredible and his desire is something else. He gets himself into so many dangerous positions. If his final ball could match his all round play he'd be even better.

As I've said before, I've actually seen this player asked to defend before. He barely attacked against Valencia a couple of seasons ago, just did his job defending and he was Barcelona's best player on the day. He can do it, its just he's asked to play as a winger starting from a fullback position and in that role, he doesnt do much defending.

Maybe Pete was referring too much about the Arsenal vs Barca game... And of course Alves had to dominate the 1 player advantage there.

Seeing Barca, he's role is just like FV and Ekeke explained.

No one mentioned that he has a cracking shot on him as well, if he had a better World cup + Brazil won it, I'd say most people will rate this lad more than Cafu.
