Good squad player who can cover a bunch of positions. Makes perfect sense to me. People love a whinge don't they.

Yep, as long as we're only intending for him to be a squad player then he has to be considered a good addition really.

It's only really a problem if we expect him to become a permanent fixture in our first team...

Can or can't? Was Blind the best player in the Dutch league? I don't watch the Dutch league. From what I have read about him, he doesn't seem to be. I don't know though.
Sorry, "can't". He won the Dutch leagues best player award last season and supposedly has been the best in the league over the last two seasons. It's not the best league but that doesn't like the standard of Central midfielders we've played over the last two league games.

This has zero to do with the fact that he's slow and weak, those CM's at the other clubs may not be world beaters but they are physically equipped for our league, Blind is not.
Last time I checked you are not obliged to play only one man in midfield, as part of a three with Di Maria and Herrera flanking him he could be sufficient till Carrick returns. An instant improvement o fielding a rusty Fletcher or a hopeless Cleverley/Anderson. He is coming in to add options and his versatility could and would have come in handy especially over the past couple of weeks.
Given the state of neglect our midfield finds itself in I think piecemeal improvements such as him and Herrera will do for now. Next summer we will obviously look to add one or a couple more but as far as I'm concerned this is way better that doing nothing and hoping that Cleverley will one day grow a pair or that this is Anderson's year. If he is confirmed in the next seventy two hours then it's clear as day that he was a back up option to Vidal and we've worked on that till it was no longer realistically possible.

If he comes then I hope he does well but my Dutch friends who follow Ajax are praying this goes through.

Even people who follow Dutch football think he's average...

Interesting. I find it odd we have left it so late to get him, then again the transfer window is like a game of cat and mouse and at 14m it looks to be a decent price for a young versatile player who had a decent world cup and season. Hopefully it is not a case of us having to get him as our other targets haven't come off. Saying that, from what LVG said the other day there could be a couple of signings before the deadline and Blind may just be one of them...

A good squad addition, especially if we managed to clear out some deadwood, especially given that he's competent in multiple positions. I think our defense is sorted, at least as far as this window goes.

Would be disappointing if we don't add more to our midfield. Given that it seems more or less confirmed that we want to get rid of Cleverley, Anderson and Fellaini, you have to assume that those have been deemed not good enough, which I agree with. That leaves us with Herrera, Carrick, Fletcher, Di Maria and potentially Blind. Given Fletcher's performances I think it's safe to say, even as his biggest fan for the longest of times, that he's just not good enough.

So we're still short, especially if we're considering Di Maria out on the wing. I expect Van Gaal to persist with the 5-3-2 for a while though, and see him going with Di Maria as a midfielder there. It'll be interesting to see how that works out with Herrera, if it turns out to be the case.

I have a Dutch made who is a die hard season ticket holder and he keeps laughing at me on Facebook. He also supports Liverpool. cnut.

14m isn't bad, he'll be a squad player here and a big improvement on all of our other squad options so I'd be pleased.

If he's so shit and all these Ajax fans are praying for him to leave then why was he voted player of the year in Holland? A bit strange.

As for the John O'Shea comparisons: I'd be absolutely delighted if he comes anywhere close to matching JOS' contributions to our success.

Haven't seen much of him other than for Holland but he was impressive and will definitely be a good utility player for us. I see some saying he's pretty average but you don't win Dutch player of the year if you're average right? His assist for van Persies beautiful headed goal was perfect so let's hope for more of the same for us.
