Daley Blind - Deal Confirmed

Well probably have to overpay now that we've left it so late. Hopefully this guy is better than Fellaini if he's this years last minute buy.

Weren't we saying that about Di Maria?
There's a couple days yet and plenty of business is done on deadline day. Think with all the talk of current CMs leaving we'll be trying for someone else and Blind seems a decent fit as he can play LWB too.

Di Maria was being offered by Madrid all summer. We became the favorite to sign him once it was known PSG would not qualify for FFP if they signed him.

You have to be kidding me? Blind is twice the player Fellaini is and at least plays the position we need, which is a DM. With Fellaini he was a AM, that we tried forcing back.

Fellaini has played a lot more matches in midfield in his career than Blind has.

We are in big trouble if Blind is our CM signing, way to slow, weak and limited for the PL.

I can't claim to have seen much of him, but I just don't get how you win Player of the Season in HOlland if you're that bad.

I'm not expecting Messi or Keano, and I can fully understand that £20m may be overpaying (but hey, we made our bed when we paid £27m for Fellaini), but he must be fairly decent!

Blind would be superb for us...not as our primary CM signing to partner Herrera tho.

Oh well, since it seems that we're going for neither Vidal nor Carvalho and there were reports of de Jong that he's not a target some time ago, it leaves us with this guy. I suppose that it sort of makes sense ( if you want to believe what you're saying of course ), player that can be bought in 24 hours, can fit more than one role, Dutch, van Gaal played him in Dutch NT, etc.

It's a completely different kind of league to ours and 3rd tier in it's level, so being top dog there isn't that much of a recommendation.

Put him and Nick Powell together in midfield and atleast we'd have one damn good looking one.

He is a great backup LB/CM and is way better coming off the bench than Clev or Fellaini.
I cannot recall when last we had decent CM backup.

What?

If he's on the bench then who the hell is starting next to Herrera?

So we've gone from scaring them with Keane and Scholes to dazzling them with these 2? Sounds appropriate since we've switched from Scottish to Dutch management.

....................Blind
........Herrera.........Di Maria

Blind would be a screen in front of the back four and would fill any holes in the defense during the game. I don't think we'll play with a midfield two now that we've signed Di Maria, who is better in a three.

I know feck all about him too but Wiki tells me he got that award in the season just gone, playing exclusively as a holding midfielder. Prompting people to call him "the Dutch Philip Lahm"

They might be getting carried away but he's clearly not that bad.

I was about to say, you surely have to be pretty good to be able to win the Player of the Season award when you're stuck in a holding midfield role...

Then I thought about Scott Parker...

Now I'm confused.

I wouldn't mind him at all based solely on the WC.

Looking through Ajax' recent Champions League groups, he featured in some of their more impressive wins - including wins against Barca and City.

Theo Jannsen and Mournir El Hamdaoui have won the award in the past so it is not proof of absolute quality. Blind is a solid player but, is not the type of top talent we should be going for.

Few examples to demonstrate how rounded Blind is.

There will be plenty of people with egg on their face if we do sign him.

I've been a fan since seeing him at the WC, and i don't like to go off these vids since they can be misleading, but damn I'd like to see him in United actually, and it's clear LvG likes him.

3rd tier indeed.

It may not be up there with the big three or four, but it has teams who can regularly get results against top European clubs. How many points do you think a League 1 club would pick up against City and Barca (and don't mentoin MK, that was a freak results against a second string team in the middle of a shcoking crisis!).

For sure. Plus you have the Scott Parker conundrum, as per @Annihilate Now!

At the end of the day, though, we have to have a little faith in Van Gaal being able to identify decent players. When he's seen as much of any player as he's seen of Blind and you have objective evidence that Van Gaal is not the only person to think he's very good, well, it seems a bit silly for "bloke off the internet" to decide that Van Gaal has it all wrong.

Assuming we actually sign him, anyway.

Linked all summer then finally signs (on deadline day), despite links to other better midfielders throughout. Such a familiar saga :(

I think he showed that he's a bit more "tactically aware" than a lot of our current players. If he can do a decent job in a number of positions I struggle to see how that's a bad thing. We rarely buy players for less than £15-20 mil these days anyway (Young, Jones, Smalling, Zaha, Rojo) so I couldn't care less.

Also. If the management speak and stupid buzzwords increase I am going to delete about 100 accounts ( I have a list) and then my own. It's like a thousand Graham Hunter clones have infiltrated the boards.

You heard him boys, get buzzin'.

Whatever, he is panic buy. It is not much improvement except that he is versatile and better than the likes of Carrick and Fletcher ( who isn't better than them actually?)

I don't know why you are rolling your eyes, the Dutch league is the same level as the Portuguese league, below tier 2 which is Ligue 1 and Serie A, with the PL, La Liga and the Bundesliga as the top tier. Blind plays in a slow league that lacks physicality, he is not the answer to our problems and if LvG really rated him we'd have bought him at least a month ago, it's clear at this point he'd be nothing but a desperation buy because we can't get anyone else.

If he's going to be primarily a defensive midfielder, then I see him as being no worse of an option than De Jong, plus the additional versatility of being quite astute at left back. The only downside is the apparent large fee Ajax will be holding out for.

I think foreign players are generally more tactically aware than Brit or Irish. Journos too.

When you look at what we flushed down the toilet for Young and Fellaini, I would be absolutely glad if we can snap up Blind for around 20m.

You said he's handsome. Did you mean his horizontal tactical synergy is handsome?
