Daley Blind - Deal Confirmed

For the reported price range I really don't see why we wouldn't go for him. We need a back-up left back and Carrick is the only player we have capable of playing a holding role in midfield (Jones could I suppose but I doubt he'd be good enough on the ball to play there for Van Gaal).

He'd be a great squad player to have.

Blind is exactly the sort of player we shouldn't be going for if there's a promising youngster available in the position. Unremarkable, very little chance of being anything more than bench-fodder... might as well give an academy kid a chance.

Fully agree, I saw all of Holland's games and I just don't get what people are getting so impressed by. He's the type of player no one here would give 2 shits about if LvG wasn't managing the Dutch team and they hadn't convinced themselves we are going to get stuck with him.

I'm not convinced he'd want the move in the first place. It wouldn't be the best move for his own development coming off the back of a brilliant tournament just to become a squad player, regardless the stature of the club.

Why? Because he's 24? He's coming off an excellent season, was one of the standout players at the World Cup and can play in the two positions we most need players. I think he's brilliant and will get significantly better.

He really wasn't.

Exactly.

That is what has been happening. People here are even saying the likes of Vlaar and De Jong would be good signings.

I'd be happy to sign him for his versatility. Decent cover for left back and central midfield. Sure he also played in the back three once during the tournament as well. We lack a player like that.

Agree with some of the comments playing down his World Cup performances. He was useful due to his versatility and his level of performance was decent but his best displays were in the group stages.

As the Dutch started to play less open football his performances tailed off. Looked pretty slow to me, but equally he didn't get massively skinned by any of the players he was up against so it might not be an issue. If he could be gotten for a decent price he looks to be one that'd make perfect sense to me. Versatile, technical and we already know that LVG likes him and he understands and buys into what LVG is doing. Also from a few things I've seen he's regarded as a good lad around the dressing room.

It was interesting that Van Gaal vs Argentina put him at LCB removing the quicker Martins Indi as he was getting skinned by Perez, Lavezzi, Messi all drifting around that area in the 1st half.

Putting Blind there tightened things up in comparison. He also put him on that side to do a Job vs Sanchez in their game where he was almost man marking him in that area.

Would be very happy with him. Back up to Shaw, a better midfield option than the likes of Anderson, Fellaini or Fletcher at the moment and to be honest would probably be a better, more reliable option as a LCB than Vermaelen too. We could clear a lot of dead wood out and upgrade on them all with a single, reasonably affordable signing.

Makes a hell of a lot of sense on many levels.

He'd be great, like John O'Shea but with better techical ability and more hair.

He seems like a player that listens to instructions. Probably keeps his head down and works really hard. A bit like G. Neville in the respect that he seems like someone who has worked and extra 20-30% to get to where he is.

Van Gaal won't get Blind as back up, unless Blind wants to be backup which I doubt. Considering Van Gaal is close to Blind's father, he's going to have his son's best interest at heart.

Martins Indi went off injured against Argentina, otherwise Blind wouldn't have ended up playing there that game. So it was kind of coincidental. Same thing against Chili with Martins Indi out injured. Wasn't really any other decent alternative for that position.

He was getting skinned and looked like getting sent off 2nd half.

I think - Contrary to popular belief - that Daley Blind would be an excellent signing for Barcelona. This is my reason:

First, he is a very hard worker, something I think they lack in their squad.

Second, he could fill the role left by Abidal. Currently Barcelona are playing with 2 very attacking fullbacks in Dani Alves (or Montoya) and Jordi Alba. Abidal used to be the more defensively incline of the two fullbacks in what was their best period. They need a player like that. Blind has shown in this world cup that he is very capable to fill in as the left sided centre back in a 3 defender system. Blind could be that auxiliary left back/centre-half for Barcelona that Abidal used to be. He is a ball player and he still has room to grow his game.

Although I believe 22m is too much for Blind, he could be an ideal signing for barcelona, especially as I think they lack squad depth, and I don't particularly rate Jordi Alba.

I think its just because he played well in his first game in the WC against Spain, so he gave off a good impression and not a lot of people have really looked twice and thought 'Hold on, he's actually not that great after all'. He is unspectacular, slow and was definitely a weakness against Argentina.

I really don't know why Barcelona would be in for him. My guess is that they're feigning interest in Blind to make Valencia kick on with negotiations for Mathieu or something along those lines.

Blind's best position where he was player of the year in Holland is actually in midfield.

He can do well in a 5 at the back system at LWB and decently in a 4 but he isn't better than Alba even if you don't rate him. He was considered pretty okayish at best in his LB days at Ajax even till De Boer converted him into midfield.

Abidal was also a natural defender and much better athelete who could play both LB and CB. Blind could do a job in a Back 3 at LCB but in a back 2 at CB he would most likely look out of place.

Mathieu in terms of abilities would be more a sort of Abidal replacement you are talking about, but he is 31. Plus they need another Proper CB.

I imagine that is what Barca are up to, I just can't see him as someone they'd seriously go after and not at that price, I still expect them to end getting Hummels or Vertonghen long term anyway.

He wouldn't play like a typical left back though, he doesn't need to bomb forward like Alba does. Last season, Alba was less than fantastic and he's certainly not irreplaceable .

Blind isnt worth £17m. Not in a million years. Even if he can play GK as good as Schmeichel, he wont be worth that.

In a world where Borini is worth £14m, surely Blind is up there.
.. But then again, the Borini price is an utter joke

Thankfully he doesn't actually mention us at all and I wouldn't be surprised if the Barca rumours are designed by his agent to spur on interest from the teams who are looking at him, no way I see him playing for a top side like Barca or United.

I'd rather sign Blind over De Jong, makes more sense too, LB cover and DM.

Blind and Vidal that would be great.

I think he will only get better with games and for that reason he would in my opinion be better off joining a club where he will play most big games and given what we paid for shaw I don't think that will be here.
Would be a good move for us but not for him so I hope he either stays at ajax or goes somembers he will get games - athletico need a left back and given their smallish squad a versatile player would be a bonus for them.

Most people I've seen who have watched him a lot rate him higher as a CM/DM anyway.

He's been spotted in Barcelona, not a good sign for us. It's also on the Daily mail website.:(

Will it be a big loss? He had a good world cup but im a regular viewer of Ajax and cant say hes ever struck me as a player we should sign

This thread is funny, he kept Argies at bay for 120 minutes, and throughout the tournament the Holland doesn't have any problems at the back.

And now he's not good enough? Blimey.

He's good enough to warrant 17M, whether we need him or we don't is another thing. You don't become the LB against the team with Messi and keep a scoresheet clean if you're rubbish

It would be no big loss and I imagine if LvG had wanted him he'd get him, of course he could just be on holiday.

He's been holidaying in Barca.. and it's been known for a while now so no surprise he gets spotted there now.

Blind would be a signing that makes so much sense whilst not wetting the appetite of the muppets.
Can rotate at left back, also in midfield so its not as if he won't get enough games if he were to come. He is at a good age and would probably not cost a bomb.
Ticks so many boxes - i would be very happy for us to sign him.
