If LVG wants to cut the squad size, then this signing makes a lot of sense
Very reserved about the signing of this man. Big chance he's just a wc sensation who will be liked by the fans until he gets found out. We've seen it a couple of times before. The squad player talking is ridiculous. Why would we spend that money on a squad player??? We could might as well use the players we have. Who is happy with buying squad players?? Fellaini, Buttner, Young, Nani, Cleverly, Kagawa Do We Need More Of Them??
Agreed.him & Vermaelen would be good buys imo
he's a very versatile footballer and would probably end up starting far more games than a lot of our players. I'd even argue that right now he's a better left wing back than Shaw.Don't see him as a centre half, doubt he'd want to be shaw's understudy, and if van Gaal doesn't get Vidal, and really wants Strootman, De Jong would be a decent signing. I rate blind, just thinking that if you're going to sign him for £17m, you'd want to sign a starter.
I have not seen enough of Blind outside of the World Cup to know how good he is at centre-back, can any regular Dutch football watchers comment?
Van Gaal clearly wants a left footed centre-half to play on the left side of the back three, and given we've dropped out of the race for Vermaelen I'd expect us to bid for Blind sooner rather than later. Especially as Blind has Sheasy like versatility and play at #3 or #6 too (not in goal though! )
I see him as a left back, or a central midfielder. However if Barça would sign Mascherano, then play him at centre back predominantly, anything is possible there.I think after missing out on Vermaelan, this is now a very prominent question. As far as I'm aware he hasn't played there too often, but I'm sure there are people who may be able to answer this?
Agreed.
I think the people who don't approve of these signings have their hearts set on more reputable names such as Hummels...
IMO Daley Blind is the most important signing we can make this window. Not because he will take our first 11 onto a new level because he wont. What he will do improve squad depth due to his versitility and provide competition for players such as Shaw who may take some time to adjust to being at a massive cllub.
Blind looks to me like the type of player who will never perform a 10 out of 10 game but at the same time will never perform less than 7 out of ten. Consistency is key, especially in a period of transition.
I liked what I saw of Blind in the World Cup, I do agree with SiRed about him, not going to get man of the match all the time but will be very consistent.
It'd be fitting if the daily mail is the first to break the story of this transfer if it does go through. They'll have a blinding headline. The headlines we could possibly have with this signing...
I can imagine that LvG knows a lot more about him. If he wants him and can find a space then it makes sense. A lot of us haven't watched him play bar the WC and some odd Ajax games in CL.He is not better than Fletcher or Herrera in CM. Not better than Shaw or Young on the wingback position. Surely he would only be a squad addition? Doesnt make too much sense imo.
I think as a centreback in a two he would struggle but in a three I think he could be ok - would still prefer blackett to be given the opportunity though - as a midfielder I honestly cant see it if we play a back three that he would be a realistic midfield option as one of only two players as he wouldnt bring enough creativity imoHe can play centre back/right back the same way Valencia can play right back. He's not good there.
While it is good to have utility players in the squad, our main priority should be actually improving it. We have players in the U21's who can cover wing back & centre half. Not to mention Young who's certainly played his way back into contention so you'd expect him to be the extra option aside from Shaw.
Think we'll sign him. He's not been training properly at Ajax according to reports in Holland. His head has been turned assume Utd are assessing options i.e Hummels etc with him being our fall back.
Jack of all trades average at all from what I've seen, his versatility is his only real pro.
Yes according to this guyIs he really able to play in a back 3 though?
You can thank United's future manager then if he turns into a quality signing haha. Here's a good assessment of Blind

NB: future manager in my opinion.
That's what'll probably happen.Nah. Once VG retires, Giggs will take over, bringing the rest of the class of 92 with him. That include the two pundits.
4-4-2 to the win.
I can't help but thinking that if we are contemplating signing Blind that our academy needs an overhaul. Blind is an average Jack of All Trades. He will be destroyed as a LWB in the EPL, there is too much pace on the wings for him to play in this position. For those that say he can cover as a LCB I say bollocks, he would be brushed aside by the top strikers in the league. As for playing in CM pls tell me this is a joke - he hasn't played their since his youth days and when called on to do so in the WC, versus Mexico, he was garbage.
I would much rather promote kids like Blackett than spunk 20m on Blind

€22m for Blind, a jack of all trades, yet master of none, is a joke. We're getting robbed blind by everyone this summer.

We always get robbed anyway tbh.Well, we're desperate, and we appear to have tons of money. And we're not shy about it either. Of course we'll get robbed.
Still, a few million more, a few milion less. Nothing that should worry us.
Please dont say that... that is a nightmare waiting to happen.. P+G Neville shouldn't be anywhere near our coaching staff.
We need a new John O'Shea instead of trying to make Phil Jones and Chris Smalling into one.
Just look at the bright side. Once the 'homegrown' and 'manager's with SAF's values' manager fail we will be put the idea of bringing a manager who has no experience to lead a top club to bed once and for all.
