Mustard has vinegar in doesn't it? Not sure what else I'd suggest to give the mixture more liquid volume, mind.

Not much though. You have to be careful how much mustard you use as it can overpower the sauce. Too much olive oil and it masks the vinegar flavour, too much vinegar and it becomes too runny and too strong. I have found that 50/50 gives the right amount of vinegar flavour and the right consistency. If it will cover the back of a teaspoon you've hit the spot as far as I'm concerned.

Link doesn't work, for me.

Is it the startling revelation that bananas cost more if you buy them ripe and packaged than if you buy them unripe and loose?

That's nothing compared to the epic saga of: Man outraged at getting crisps with his meal deal.

Finding himself a bit peckish after boarding a train, Chris Lees was not impressed with the choice of food on offer in the buffet car.

Days before he had made a New Year's resolution to lose weight and in front of him was a sea of snacks, alcohol and fizzy drinks.

In the end, he decided to have a money-saving meal deal consisting of a sandwich, cup of tea and a bag of crisps.

But when he asked if he could leave the crisps behind to stick to his low-carbohydrates diet, he was told he would have to take them or pay the full amount for the sandwich and drink.

Faced with having to hand over £5.05 instead of £4.80 for the meal deal, he reluctantly took the cheese and onion flavoured snack.

The businessman yesterday said he wasn't sure if he was the victim of a jobsworth member of staff at National Express East Anglia or a company policy, but he branded the situation 'bizarre'.

'There was nothing healthy in their entire selection apart from a bag of Snack a Jacks and they weren't part of the deal,' said Mr Lees, 42, who lives with his wife Imogen and their two children in Earlham, near Norwich.

'So I said to the man behind the counter that I'd have the meal deal but he could keep
the bag of crisps. He said to me "You have to take the bag of crisps or I have to charge you for the tea".

'I could have just walked away without the crisps but it didn't occur to me at the time and I wouldn't have wanted to risk him running after me.

'I couldn't give them away. Everyone is either on a diet themselves or they would think I had poisoned the contents.'

Mr Lees runs a recruitment consultancy firm in Norwich and travels to London two or three times every week for business in London.

He was on the 8am National Express East Anglia service to London Liverpool Street on January 6 when he was forced to take the crisps, along with the drink and bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich.

He added: 'I am trying to make a healthy reduction of my carbohydrate intake to around the equivalent of one small potato a day.

'I have also cut out all the snacks and, now that I have, I realise just what a snack monster I was, particularly with the salty variety. I have a real weakness for things like crisps, Bombay mix and preserved meats.

'On the train all they had were chocolate bars, sweets, sandwiches, pastries, crisps, beer and wine. I didn't see any fruit or vegetables.'

Britain is in the grip of an obesity time bomb and some companies, such as Boots, have responded by offering healthy options as part of their meal deals.

Sue Fairweather-Tait, professor of nutrition at the University of East Anglia, said yesterday: 'Wouldn't it be nice if [National Express East Anglia] offered crisps or an apple? It's a shame people have to take the crisps.'

A spokesman for the train operator yesterday revealed it was now going to offer a healthier option as part of its meal deals.

He said: 'We offer a variety of popular meal deals which are regularly reviewed to provide choice and good value.

'We're always grateful for feedback and will be offering fruit as part of this meal deal in future.'

Can't quite read the pic, but is the supplier UK-based? If so, if it use by FTSE 100 companies like Tesco and M&S, you'd hope it would pay minimum wage (he said naively). There are plenty of lazy feckers in England who won't work for minimum pay though, seriously. It's not a total DM myth, I grew up with a bunch of them in Hull.

Yeah mate, it's a UK company named Greencore Group.

The supposed story here: that an Irish company called Greencore, who make more than a 3rd of the UK’s sandwiches, are offering jobs in their new Northampton factory – nobody seems to want to apply for them.

According to the Daily Mail, unemployed locals would prefer to sit around on benefits – and so Greencore have had to fly to Hungary to find workers.

Or, perhaps, people do want jobs, but these jobs have very difficult working conditions and people are talking about it?

On Greencore’s website they’ve been advertising a range of positions since October 30th – there’s no mention of how much they pay, but you will have to work nights and weekends – so, not ideal for anyone with a family.

you will be required to work on a shift basis including the requirement to work nights and weekends

According to union Unite, at the time of a 2012 employment tribunal concerning a Greencore factory in Hull the majority of staff “were on the national minimum wage”. [Source]

Oh, and that employment tribunal?
Greencore had broken an agreement on overtime and bank holiday pay rates, and were ordered to pay out £1.2 million to staff – following the tribunal, they subsequently tried to change contracts to avoid paying any more AGAIN until staff went on strike. [Source] [Source]

Which might suggest a certain attitude to their workforce.
And, typically, immigrant workers are less likely to join a union.

So what’s it like to work for Greencore? Well, Glassdoor, a site where employees can review their employers anonymously, has some extremely negative reviews.
A low 1.8/5 overall rating, and only FOURTEEN PERCENT of staff would recommend working there to a friend.

Here are some quotes from the reviews:
Sweatshop mentality. Disregaurd for employees life’s outside the job.

Really low salary, lots of hazards like noisy environment, freezers and etc.

This year I have seen this company bring grown men and women to the brink of tears at the festive period by telling them that they have to work Christmas Eve, Boxing day, New years eve [...] all with hours of notice after they had made plans with their families.

I’ve seen people refused holidays that are due to them so that at the end of the year they lose them and are left unpaid for holidays they are due. Hey Ho.

I’ve heard of people soiling themselves, in any way you can imagine because they would not be let away from the production line to go to the toilet. IN A FOOD FACTORY!!!

How many of you would actually work at such a place?

Did you see the ridiculous story yesterday about the "white widow" being killed while fighting in Ukraine? No evidence of course nor any explanation why the Keyser Soze of Islamist terror (in the Mail's worldview) would be fighting with Catholic/Orthodox Ukrainian paramilitaries in Eastern Ukraine.

Comments:

Well done parents.

Well done to the parents who oppose this indoctrination. I wouldn't want my kids to be exposed to this nonsense.

Resignation required IMMEDIATELY

I'm with the parents on this one. Some things may well be "legal" but that still doesn't make it right. He wouldn't be trusted with my children.

same-sex marriage is legal ===Maybe so but that's doesn't make it right or acceptable.

If you don't like then change schools!

No, but then it wasn't intended to be. It was some comments from an article on the Daily Mail.
You're worse than the teachers with your anti-DM indoctrination.

People are feeling sorry for the penguins but how do they know they're not as up for it as the seals? I'm sure they could fly off before the seals pounce if they really didn't want a poking.

That's one seal who'll never play for Sheffield United again.
