Cycling 2017

This stage is already far better than all the others put together. We're going to have loads of riders finish outside of the time limit I think. It's looking especially ominous for Démare who's almost 15 minutes behind already.

The pain from that cramp will be unreal, I get it inside of my thigh and it's absolute agony.

Like seeing tete de le course have 5+ minutes over peloton. It's also annoying how quickly and easily can that decrease.

Geraint Thomas is out with a broken collarbone. Don't think they showed the crash on TV.

It's all kicking off, Froome got attacked just as he had mechanical trouble. Then they all slowed down to let Froome come back.

I think Froome's relative lack of race miles coming into the tour will be massively to his benefit the longer this race goes on.

Tour de Bore now. Just like the Armstrong years (not implying anything - just saying it's a foregone conclusion without Porte)

Real shame as that crash has basically killed most of the entertainment hope for me this tour.

Far too many big riders already out of it to save this tour, just a terrible edition. Valverde, Porte, Thomas, Sagan, Démare, Izagirre, Cavendish, etc. It's a ridiculous list. For the GC we have to hope Aru or Bardet are strong enough over the next two weeks (I don't believe in Uran), the others are already too far behind.

It's not that bad, Aru's a grand tour winner and Bardet's is a rising star. On top of that Fuglsang's
right in there and Dan Martin despite his crash. Peleton is littered with other stars even if their roles are as doms.

Ok if you only look at the likely winner then of course it's Froome, but with or without Porte, it was unlikely he would have been beaten anqay, although I do admit Porte has never looked so good.

Desperately disappointing for Thomas today. He's just not having any luck in the GT's this year.

Looking at the standings I think I was unfair on Aru, Bardet, and Uran. One hell of an effort by Bardet today. Froome, with a little more bad luck, may have been in second GC. For example, if Aru and Uran were not in the group with him today he may not have been able to catch Bardet. 18 seconds could disappear in a flash.

1 Christopher Froome (GBr) Team Sky
2 Fabio Aru (Ita) Astana Pro Team 0:00:18

Absolutely, and his Astana co-leader Fuglsang's right up there with him. Long way to go, and really, anything can still happen.

Porte was never going to be good enough to beat Froome anyway, he was at his best in the Dauphine and barely beat Froome back then. Aru (maybe Bardet) was always the best bet since he's the only one that's actually a better climber than Froome.

Agreed that the Tour lacks competition but it's been like that for years.

Porte's injuries are not too bad in the end. He will take between 4 and 6 weeks to recover.

So under the recommendation of my friend I just looked at a few of the riders Strava accounts and it's absolutely ludicrous how fast they're going

Looks crazy but it matters a great deal if you're riding solo or in a peloton. You can almost freewheel at 40km/h in the middle of the pack.
