Cuadrado

If it's between us and Barca, we're not getting him simple as that.
Expect us to brief some papers that we have 'pulled out' or 'van Gaal veto'd the deal' or 'never interested' around the time Barca complete the deal for him.

They had €60m left in their budget before they signed Vermaelen is what's being reported in the Catalan media.
Plus they may have nothing on the books for next year which helps their 3 year average, if I understand correctly...

I just cant see the point in Cuardrado. If were gunna spend £30m on him, why not spend the extra £20m and get Di Maria, whose by far the better player, and whom Real Madrid are MAD to let go.

Going for Cuardrado, is like when we went for Ashley Young instead of Arjen Robben, Gareth Bale, or Alexis Sanchez.

I think we went for Cuadrado thinking Di Maria was unavailable but psg messed up now Di Maria is back on the market.....the common sense move now is to go for Maria...it would be a win/win for all parties involved.
We will get either one IMO.

Except it isn't. And we did go in for Robben, Sanchez and Bale, they just happened to turn us down.

Nah

If we signed Di Maria, then expect to change to a 4-3-3
Mata, Rooney and RVP...only 1 of them would fit into that system. Plus we'd have to sign another winger for the other flank and probably another CM to play in the 3. These are the reasons why we are 3-5-2 in the first place.

As for Bale, i'm talking a year or two before he left for Madrid. Sanchez, I agree we did go for, or atleast alot of media speculation when he went from Udinese to Barca. But we never went wholeheartedly for Robben when he went to Munich.

Di Maria is incredibly versatile. Signing him allows us more flexibility in playing in either a 3-5-2 or 4-3-3. Our CM and CB quality and depth aren't sufficient to commit to a 4-3-3 as our primary formation.

Mata would probably play the advanced role of the midfield 3, RvP up top and Di Maria on say the right wing.. Rooney would be used on the left, which of course takes away from his game.. That's the drawback I can think of unless you play Januzai/Kagawa/Nani out there and rotate Rooney with RVP.

All seems abit silly just to fit Di Maria in. I mean World Class player but wouldn't it make more sense to buy a player who can fit into the formation.

As I said Di Maria is World Class but he's not so good that you just 'have to buy him if available'

Fair enough if it was Ronaldo...

After the season he just had, I'd say he is that good.
He outshone Ronaldo and bale on numerous occasions and he is one of the primary reasons they are European champions.

He is worth the money.

Where would you fit him, RVP, Rooney and Mata in then?

Rooney can play as a winger in a 4-3-3 and so can Welbeck. What if we sign Di Maria and we can't sign another winger in time? I don't see him playing as a wingback.

I can see Barcelona pulling out and Cuardrado rejecting us to stay at Fiorentina.

Rooney - RVP - Di Maria
Carrick - mata - Herrera.

With mata being the CAM of the 433

From playing 3-5-2 the whole preseason to suddenly shifting to 4-3-3 is slightly risky.

Its akin to Holland playing 4-3-3 their entire qualifying campaign and then shifting to 3-5-2 in about 3-4 weeks. They did well even after the 'seismic' shift didn't they? People are placing too much weight on the formation and how we will set-up, the system is more important tbh. LVG has said that much, you could play 4-4-2, 4-2-3-1, 3-5-2 etc the roles will differ a bit but the basic system and its values that LVG wants to instil will still be there with a few tweaks here and there. LVG himself has said his favoured formation is 4-3-3 and he isn't playing that due to lack of specialist wingers and quality midfielders too I assume.

Cuadrado's agent has apparantly flown to Manchester - as per reports from Spain.. (Probably bullshit, but anyway..)

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The agent of Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado has touched down in Manchester, according to reports in Spain, sparking rumours the Colombian could be nearing a move to Man United.
Cuadrado was one of the outstanding performers at the summer’s World Cup and is hot property on the transfer market following his return from Brazil.

The Red Devils are thought to be locked in a three-way battle for the 26-year-old, with Barcelona and Real Madrid also interested.

It was said United had tabled a formal £27.5m bid for Cuadrado earlier in the window, but that figure is significantly less than Fiorentina’s believed €50m [£39m] valuation.

Reports around Europe have varied as to who is leading the race to sign the La Viola forward, but this latest news could suggest Louis van Gaal has finally landed his man having missed out on Barcelona-bound Thomas Vermaelen, while their drawn out chase for Juventus midfielder Arturo Vidal continues.

talkSPORT’s man in Spain, Paul Breen-Turner, joined the Transfer Tavern to share all the latest on Cuadrado’s next destination: “It’s just breaking in the national press, but Juan Cuadrado’s agent is said to have landed in Manchester.

“After his form at the World Cup, Fiorentina have been forced to admit they will have to let the player go.

“He’s been strongly linked with Barcelona and Real Madrid, along with Manchester United, with a price tag of around €50million.

“And it seems the player’s agent, according to these reports, is indeed in Manchester as we speak.”

Err, it's Talksport. This report was posted yesterday and was proven to be bollocks. Talksport's transfer sources are so often wide of the mark, nothing to see here.

Then we have this story

Man United no longer in for Cuadrado, preparing €70m Di Maria bid [Sport + Marca]

The consensus in the Spanish press is fairly clear: Manchester United have given up on Fiorentina winger Juan Cuadrado to concentrate their efforts on bringing in Angel Di Maria from Real Madrid.

Marca report that Manchester United are preparing a 70 million euro bid for Di Maria who is keen to leave the Bernabeu.

Di Maria, despite a fantastic 2013/2014 season, is not happy with his current salary at Real Madrid and Manchester United will have to pay seven million euros per year to the Argentine midfielder.

United had been heavily linked with Cuadrado, who impressed for Colombia at the World Cup and seems keen to leave The Viola for a bigger club.

Catalan paper Sport have revealed that Barcelona are now in the box seat to sign Cuadrado, with Manchester United having left the race to concentrate on Di Maria.

Barcelona hope to drive down the price for Cuadrado as they are the only realistic club left in for the Colombian, although they may have to sell Dani Alves first.

This comes just as Louis van Gaal has been quoted talking about the lack of high class wingers at Old Trafford.

LVG: “We don’t have attacking wingers to give us width. Or, I should say, we don’t have wingers of the highest level, like Ronaldo or Di Maria, or somebody like that.”

Oh & i know. They're just the voice of the papers when it comes to transfers.

Still love listening to the station though. Have it on now actually..
It's a good laugh at times and decent for a but of football debate, I agree. Shame about the transfer sources though! I've heard them announce us signing Carvalho, Vermaelen and Miranda this season alone.

No-one knows what really goes on with transfers apart from the 3 parties type of thing, so its all just speculation. We all do it with our mates - without having any sound knowledge what the feck we're talking about.

You're blessed having a 24hr radio station dedicated to sport & mainly football. In Ireland, we have Newstalk "Off-the-wall" sport section at 7pm-10pm mon-fri - thats it man. Ironically - talksport is owned by UTV - the Northern Irish TV channel branch of ITV.

I stream talksport religiously. I cant get enough of it man - always have it on in the background...

Top drawer no doubt..

He's obviously available, and you don't turn your nose up at this calibre of player. The 4-3-3 seems to be the benchmark for LvG anyway so this 3-5-2 is only temporary. Once we have wingers of a certain quality, then he will revert to type.

Barcelona are apparently back in for him and the player seems to have more interest in Barcelona. Looks like we'll lose another player to them (although Vermaelen was due to Wenger.)

Weren't Barcelona meant to be suspended from transfers or have I dreamt this?

Zubizaretta has been raving about him. Looks like he's about to find his Barca DNA again. Ah well.

If it's between us and Barcelona for a South American player we'll lose every time CL football or not.

So much for Woody saying he wants to stop all the best players going to Spain.
