I thought this was interesting from the newbies.

Ronaldo - 290 goals after 2475 shots

Messi - 283 goals after 1312 shots

Falcao - 176 goals after 533 shots

Van Persie - 166 goals after 1034 shots

Rooney - 205 goals after 1710 shots

Henry - 209 goals after 1354 shots

Falcao is a beast.

You do know that he loves the attention and thrives under pressure right?

I see what he's saying though. It's rare that the player with all the media attention before a match ends up being the one who actually makes the big impact. Except for Messi, who exists to make rules of thumb like that look silly. And whilst Ronaldo does like the spotlight, Rooney tends to wilt in it (see 2010 world cup), so having the focus elsewhere is a good thing for him.

For me there is a big difference between Ronaldo and Beckham. All those times Ronaldo went on about his boyhood dream to play for Madrid, when Beckham talked about his boyhood dream, it was to play for us. Beckham is a product of our youth system and he has been unwavering and categorical in his support of United ever since he left. Ronaldo has been diplomatic since he left but it is not the same thing.

Plus, on a completely different level, Ronaldo is still at the top of his game, is one of the world's best players and could completely destroy us. I think we need to be mindful of that, while being respectful. Becks was well past it, we had nothing to be scared of with him and could afford to be enthusiastic in our welcome, without it coming across as desperate or sycophantic.

Spot on. The two situations aren't comparable.

Some of the posts in here are laughable.

Ronaldo is right up there with my favourite players of all time. I still feel gutted when I watch old videos of him playing for us.

But there is no way that I would want to see our fans singing his name during the game.

He should get a cheer when his name is read out at kick-off and then maybe a song after full-time, and that's it.

And FFS, whatever we do, DON'T boo him!!

Completely agree with those 3 sentences. You have to think, what would our players be thinking if their very own fans are chanting the name of the most deadliest player on the opposition team? Played for us or not, I'd be quite embarrassed if we sang his chant DURING the game.

Cheer for him when his name is called out, and give him a round of applause at the end of the game because he will inevitably be going towards us home fans as well as the travelling Madrid fans.

Finally, even though I don't think many had this in their minds, booing him would be crazy. We may have booed Beckham a bit, but I'm sure he would understand that it's banter. Ronaldo - we still want him to join us  Last thing we want is to him to take it the wrong way.

Hopefully I'll get tickets for this one, as it's way after my exams  It will be special seeing him again.

I didn't mean don't boo him because of the (very slim) chance of him coming back.

My point was, every opposition fan in The Premier League booed him whilst he was with us and he fecking loves it! It makes him play better. We know this!

Does no one else think it will be a tad cringe worthy if our fans sing his name? I'm all for respecting previous players that have given us so many memories, but on a night when Ronaldo is trying to knock us out of the CL, I can't help think singing his name over the United players on the pitch is just wrong.

I would expect a nice cheer for him when the names are announced, then nothing more! This is fecking war, and let's not forget that Ronaldo will be doing his best score as many goals as possible against us.

The 2 people that posted just above you.

Reading the thread is the way forward... :smirk:

 I know, I have just read back. I came steaming in the thread and just posted without reading. I thought the thread would still be on the same track as yesterday when I was reading.

It will be hilarious if he scores, what will our fans do? cheer? cry? laugh?

some people wont have any idea.

It won't be hilarious in the slightest, because it could knock us out of the CL.

He's the enemy for 90 minutes, I hope all the supporters remember that.

fecking too right. feck Ronaldo and his ivory tower for 180 minutes.

If, not when, Ronaldo scores at OT our fans will react no differently than they would if anyone else scored against us. MUFC fans are not pussies.

Ronaldo will have to dive once or twice to make some fans stop singing about him.To have had him as a player was fantastic but as an opponent I have no worry about me hating and abusing him from my living room. That's the nature of the game

I reckon he would celebrate, not in Old Trafford though. He celebrated vs. Lisbon when he scored against them in Old Trafford, not in Portugal though. If I remember...

Aye that's right. It was still quite muted though.

He'll take a dive in the box in the 90th and the great Caf Ronaldo love affair will be over.

Are you sure that he celebrated against Lisbon?

Because the Guardian claim otherwise.

During United's victorious Champions League campaign in 2007-08, Ronaldo scored in both games against his former club, Sporting Lisbon, and did not celebrate either goal, also going on to apologise to the home fans after scoring the winning goal for United in Lisbon.

He scored a diving header in Lisbon right? And then a freekick at home? Or did he score two in Lisbon?

He celebrated at OT but not in Lisbon.

It will be hard for him not to celebrate if he scores a vital goal in the second led IMO.

He didn't celebrate either, dragged out the 07/08 dvd last night to remember some of his finer moments in Red.

The guy is a class act and i for one hope he gets a great reception on his return...then i hope we destroy his club and dreams of winning Euro cup with Madrid.

Cannot wait for tie on March fifth. thinking about booking two days off work so i can have a proper drink.
