Cristiano Ronaldo

Booing Ronaldo didn't really do us (Porto) any good.

I'd just ignore the man. Not so much a question of motivating / winding him up, but more a question of respect for the players still in red who will be playing against him that day. Putting myself in their shoes, I wouldn't like hearing him cheered (even before the game) one bit. A small applause at the end might be more tolerable.

SAF will know how to deal with Ronaldo. He is great going forward (sometimes), but hates defending or working for the team. We are playing against Real Madrid plus Cristiano Ronaldo, lets hope SAF can exploit his weaknesses.

Having played for us for a relatively long time, our defenders should know how to keep him away. It would be great to try and keep Rafael in his defensive position rather than asking him to go on an offensive because we know how Ronaldo is and his lack of tracking back. It will be perfect for Real since they love to counter and if Rafael isn't there, Ronaldo could cause problems. We cannot afford to play Scholes nor Giggs in this one.

Some of the posts here are fecking embarassing.

I think some people here support wrong club, and they should have started supporting Real Madrid long time ago, as soon as Ronaldo signed for them.

proper posts

Well in Sewelly... good advice from the Geordie.

Cheer him all you want after the ties is over, but during the game he is the enemy.

Exactly!! This is business and there are no friends in business, just enemies. We have a job to do, they have a job to do so, let us make sure we do our job better than they do. I cannot imagine Mourinho for one minute asking Ronaldo to "go easy on them remember, they are your old team." He will be telling him to go for the jugular since it is his priority to win the decima.

Hope he gets a similar return to this:

Obviously they key difference here is that he will be playing all 90 minutes at Old Trafford, scoring the first hat trick from an opposing player here since his namesake did in the same tie 9 years ago.

He will get treated and shouted at the same as any opposition player we play. I don't care about him on that day, and only want my team to win. Viva who?

Giggsy has kicked it all off. Strap yourselves in...

Did he really say that, or did he just say "Messi is the best in the world".

Would like to hear a chorus of 'Viva Ronaldo' after we've beat them. So long as he doesn't do anything twattish.

He looked the journo right in the eye and smirked, he had no soul left in his body. His eyes were deep and dark and it is at that moment where he turned and said 'You're not the special ron.'

Sounds legit.

The great thing about all this is that all the attention will be focused on Ronaldo, the lad will be under some serious pressure to perform. Lets hope Rooney and RVP steal the show.

I really think it. Marcelo is shit at defending, Valencia is much better than Ronaldo to help the defense. Hence I can't see how Marcelo/Coentrao can cope with both of Valencia and Rafael without a protection from Ronaldo.

Well, Essien could be the answer, but let's hope that Madrid won't go with ultra defensive tactics.

 Mourinho isn't an idiot, he will ask one of his midfielders to help Real's LB.You don't wanna waste Ronaldo's energy by too much defensive work plus him being who he is will limit Rafael's forward runs.
I actually can't believe you're serious

He will probably get a free role with others to mark and defend.

During and after the game, his name shouldnt be mention at all. Only United.
Strange anyone would want to cheer for an opposite player while United fight for the CL

Seconded. If a Barcelona player was playing against us, I would still support us than him, simply because Manchester United are my team. All I want to hear that night is "Rooney, Rooney", or even an RVP song. The last thing that I want to hear during the game, would be "Viva Ronaldo", because it will work as an incentive and motivate him even more.

Booing him could also motivate him. But not doing it or singing about him would show more about the supporters, I think. Singing could been heard like a "thank you for the memories" or "weren't you better with us?", and not at all a wish for his team to eliminate United.

Viva Ronaldo would be cringeworthy tbh. That night, I couldnt care less about Ronaldo, all I want is my team to win.
Anyone who'd want to sing about Ronaldo that night should think if they support the right team

Why would anyone boo him?? Why would you wanna say thanks for the memories (and the past) while in that very moment (present) your team fights for the CL? I prefer to focus on my team, not an opposite player who used to play for us

I like Ronaldo and I like Madrid (see my username and location!) but seriously, we have to remember that we are United supporters first and foremost. Having the second leg at OT won't be advantageous at all if we spend the game fawning over Ronaldo and singing about him. We need to make the home advantage count and make it a tough atmosphere for them to come and play in and we won't do that singing songs about cristiano the entire game. It goes without saying that he should get a good reception but then that's it. We get 100% behind our lads then, spurring them on.

Absolutely. I'm not against giving him a good reception and applauding him after the match as he leaves the pitch. Maybe a rendition of Viva Ronaldo then wouldn't be so bad.

But before and during the match, I want to see and hear complete support of our team and players. I don't want to hear one bit of Viva Ronaldo during the match.

I agree and that should not even be up for debate. It is strange we have a discussion about that

Do you like/semi-support Madrid because you like Ronaldo?

No I liked Madrid a long time before Christiano went there. I could never be that enamoured with a player that I 'semi-support' every club they move to after they leave united.

We'd probably only break out the Ronaldo songs if we're winning comfortably. He'll get a few not actually serious boos as well, just like Beckham did.

Alternatively, we could do a "that boy Ronaldo made United look shite" if we're getting trounced.

Were you against the reception Beckham got when he came to us with Milan, then?

I really hope we don't sing that.

For me there is a big difference between Ronaldo and Beckham. All those times Ronaldo went on about his boyhood dream to play for Madrid, when Beckham talked about his boyhood dream, it was to play for us. Beckham is a product of our youth system and he has been unwavering and categorical in his support of United ever since he left. Ronaldo has been diplomatic since he left but it is not the same thing.

Plus, on a completely different level, Ronaldo is still at the top of his game, is one of the world's best players and could completely destroy us. I think we need to be mindful of that, while being respectful. Becks was well past it, we had nothing to be scared of with him and could afford to be enthusiastic in our welcome, without it coming across as desperate or sycophantic.

Booing him would just be unclassy and motivate him further. Just give him a fantastic reception when his name is called out and then ignore him for the remainder of the game, no special treatment in terms of songs, booing etc... - simples, don't know why everyones making such a big deal about it.

He's a former club servant who was instrumental in us winning a CL and getting to another final (remember we only have 3), so afford him a decent amount of respect to put the club in a good light and thats that.. no need to suck him off or anything.
