Cristiano Ronaldo

Well, you could also bring a video of Nani with amazing dribbles, I don't know what to take out of that compilation to be honest.

You used a video to demonstrate Messi's ability in tight spaces also.

Messi might be the better dribbler but Ronaldo's dribbling skills are also fantastic.

You seem to think Ronaldo's ability to dribble isn't good enough but I would say to the contrary.

Football is much more than just dribbling past a player.

I don't care who is better out of the two, I don't even know how you could possibly ask that question since football is a team game and you would pick both in your 11. But saying Ronaldo's dribbling isn't good enough to consider him one of the best players is crazy!

Well, I'm going to be honest, I have a very formed opinion on Ronaldo and why he's not on the list of the best players ever, but the mod ask me to go slow and this is just my first day as a full member, so I'm going to keep that to myself.

Cheers!

Comparing Messi and Ronaldo's dribbling ability is bollocks anyway since they're two completely different players, different styles, different body shapes, weight, centre of gravity and they're asked to play two completely different roles in two completely different styles of team.

Fact is, Ronaldo has proved in the past to have very good close control and an ability to run past multiple players if needs be but he's asked to play a different way, lay the ball off and use his sheer pace and athleticism to get on the end of each move, which he pretty much always does to devastating effect.

Messi isn't asked to do that so he focuses more on the dribbles and does more of them.

Again, I ask of you all. It's impossible to compare them and this ridiculous need to do so serves no purpose. Same with comparing either to greats of the past. You'll never get a level playing field to sample them and their abilities so it's pointless to even suggest. Just appreciate them for what they are whilst we've still got them at their peaks.

Nobody is looking at this season's goal rate to judge his class; instead we are looking at the last five years and he has been terrific in all of them - that's what puts him up as world class. At his very best, Ronaldinho is the greatest player I've watched followed by fat-Ronaldo - both had higher ceilings than both Ronaldo and Messi, but ultimately the game is about more than that - it's about delivering the goods season after season, and in that respect Ronaldo is tough to beat.
If someone said Ronaldo wasn't "world class" you'd have to question their judgment. Never did I say he wasn't world class. I said he wasn't the best ever and he's not currently the best (Messi) but, thats just an opinion. I think its a pretty unanimous agreement he is not the best player ever.

Barcelona, Athletico, Valencia from Liga. They have no difficult opponents in CL group so will have to wait until the knockouts to see that.

Just Atlético so far then. Played three times so far, scored 1 penalty.

Would class Sevilla as a tough game myself though (scored twice) with Villarreal away (scored one) borderline. Athletic Club would usually count too but they were in free fall when he played them.

Talking about Athletic, saw their game vs Real at the weekend and it was the first time I had watched Laporte. Not the best game to judge him on but he floundered like the rest of their back 4. Hope to see him again soon in more normal circumstances.

1 penalty in three games against athletico is hardly glowing form, but I won't hold that against him.

It's also your opinion that only the players that happen to be highly skilled in close dribbling can be considered great I find surprising. That's the first time I've heard such an opinion.

Sorry, but that's ludicrous.

Messi is the most naturally talented footballer to play the game. Look at him run with the ball ffs, he's a freak of nature.

If I'm not wrong he's the top scorer in the Madrid derby. Used to score goals for fun against them.

Edit: he has 13 goals in the derby. The top scorer is Di Stefano who has 17.

95% of you haters would hail him as the greatest of all time if he was doing this for United right now.

The pace he's at right now is seriously frightening... the scariest thing is that he wants more and more. He's an absolute phenom. Just a machine gun.

But then you are bringing other type of situation, that's a cross and a sublime first touch, he's very good at it.

I'm talking about controlling the ball in velocity and find space for yourself in a football pitch, that's probably the most difficult aspect of football. The whole game is based on opening spaces as a team so a player can score, then the very top do it by themselves.

I thought scoring was considered the most difficult aspect of football?

I think you've made it very clear that you do not like him as a player.

I guess we must just sit on the edge of our seats until the mods give you the go ahead to share your insight ;)

Yeh right, not even Messi could win Utd the league in their current state, let alone Ronaldo. They're in deep shit if they don't sort it out within the next couple transfer windows.
Messi can't, but Ronaldo will...

I never been a big fan of Messi only because everyone seems to think he is a saint when I think he is a bit of a prick. But to me he is still the best football player I have ever seen. Yes Ronaldo is top 10 maybe top 5 of all time(I can't rank to accurately as being 26 I didn't get a chance to see many of the other greats) but Messi tops him IMO. When he is on there is nobody that can stop him. Not the best defenders in the world not even a Stoke team on a cold Wednesday night at the Britania.

Matter of opinion. Ronaldinho's dribbles and ability to go past any player with pace, agility, ball control and dribbles unlike anyone else trumps Messi, imo of course. Messi is a better player, no doubt, but in terms of their ceilings, I think Ronaldinho was better.

Nah. Ronaldinho is my favourite player and while he was better than Ronaldo at the things you mention, Messi trumps both of them and by some distance.

In a weird way it's the ridiculous consistency with which Messi does it is what leads people to underrate him and take it for granted.

I don't underrate Messi at all, but he doesn't do tricks and dribbles the way Ronaldinho did - Messi's consistency is what puts him above Ronaldinho for me, not his skills with the ball.

I was talking about this season. I don't agree that Cristiano only scores in the easy games, just posting the stats anyway.

Who is it that can stop Ronaldo?

Cristiano has 14 goals against them (in 17 apps), Santillana has 15, Di Stéfano and Bernabéu have 17.

Although 7 of those 14 came from penalties, which frankly is an almost dubious amount.

Does Euro 2004, World Cup 2006 and Euro 2012 not count as a major tournament with Portugal?

He was unstoppable in all those tournament's?

I'm not criticising Ronaldo, just quashing the notion that he doesn't get marked out of games, and when he does he gets frustrated and makes bad/selfish decisions.

You've been watching him for years now, week in-week out, are you saying that you haven't noticed this? I would've thought the canonisation of him on these boards would annoy you more than it annoys most.

That's fair enough. I thought you were implying that he did not perform at these tournaments.

He hasn't really performed in the last four. He threatened to have a good one in 2012, but it fizzled out for him.

Agree with that. Wouldn't count 2012 as a good tournament for him, he just took the piss with his shoot on sight policy.

Watch Portugal in any major tournament.

Or recall last season's CL final.

You should read that post more closely.

A poster said Messi was unstoppable when he is at his best and I got the impression he was implying Ronaldo can be stopped even when performing at his best, I then asked who can stop Ronaldo? Obviously you must read a post in context and I mean who can stop Ronaldo at his best.

So I think it's quite apparent for Portugal he hasn't performed to his best thus you've taken what I've said out of context.

The reply and the post to which the reply was should both be read.
