Cristiano Ronaldo

He's a great player, but I also think that the Spanish league is poorer than people think. Apart from the two super clubs. Would he have scored those same goals over here? I certainly think he would have got his share, but not the numbers that he's had over there.
As opposed to the superior defences in the prem, where a promoted team like Leicester score 4 in 20 minutes?

Two super clubs and another club that just happened to reach the final of the Champions League. And yet another that won the Europa League.

The relegation fodder in the Spanish league is piss poor, but the top half has a lot of quality.

Literally every time Ronaldo does something good TheShedEnd comes in here discrediting him, it's hilarious  Today I learned that scoring 7 goals in 2 games, 12 goals in 8 games, 264 goals in 254 games is not doing amazing things on the pitch.
He's like the second coming of Proud Lyon.

Have a read through the La Liga thread during the game. I'm fascinated with his position and what he does off the ball, he's outstanding when he gets in front of goal, dangerous aerially, and one on one phenomenal.... but I don't like the ridiculous notion that because he scores goals by the bucketload he must be one of the greatest players (i.e mixing it with Maradona and co), cause he clearly isn't.

A great player is more than just goals. Messi right now is put into that bracket because he's the best dribbler in the world, he's probably the most creative player in the world, he rarely ever goes down easily and he puts up ridiculous numbers at the same time. His influence is the main reason Barcelona are the most successful team of our generation.

Back to Ronaldo, Is he a better dribbler than Robben? Is he more creative than Di Maria or Ozil? Does he have the quick speed of thought like Messi? No. He's a top player but excels in his work rate, consistency and a supreme goal scoring instint. Great finisher, but up there with the greatest players? No. Do one. Top 15-30 yes, top 10? Not a chance.

Just on the knee injury/condition. The gossip press say he's tried multiple therapies, including after the World Cup a month of no running/kicking and no exercise that puts direct load on the knee. The break that saw him miss the Real Sociedad match and the internationals may have allowed him to try electrical ablation of the inflamed tissue in the knee - which requires basically a 10 day training pause after the procedure.

However, more significantly perhaps, he's been advised if he wants to lengthen his career he needs to reduce the amount of full speed sprinting/twisting/sharp stops he does. There's certainly been a change in his game this year, perhaps like the one Giggs went through in his early 20s. Visibly he's become more of a team player when he's out wide and he's perhaps cashing in more on his positioning in the box rather than racing in at the last second.

It would be interesting to get hold of those sprint stats, but Prozone and Opta dpn't give those away for free, so normally I only see snippets. If anyone does see them, please let me know - says geek :D

How much are the stats?

Feck me. Another 4 knocked in today. He could break yet more records this year. Easily one of the greatest 75-100 footballers ever imo - thats for you Shedend ::wenger:

Scores seven goals in two games. Doesn't influence games enough.

Ronaldo basher logic.

He's far closer to the best ever than top 75-100.

EDIT: Some joke directed at shedend I guess! Sorry.

It shows the prem is more competitive throughout the league. Our defence is not great, but could you imagine a newly promoted team doing that in La Liga to Barca or RM?

Yep, being one of the top 15-30 players of all time is ridiculous. :wenger:

For your benefit only, lets say attacking players only (so we disqualify defenders and keepers who get no credit whatsoever it seems).

That's Messi, Maradona, Cruyff, Pele, Ronaldo (Brazilian), di Stefano, Garrincha, Best, van Basten, Platini, Zidane, Laudrup (Michael) etc - with the talentless hacks like Beckenbauer, Moore, Gullit, Baresi, Facchetti, Maldini, Schmeichel, Yashin and so on behind right?

Ronaldo wouldn't make the all time 11 that's for sure.

Ronaldo is better than Zidane and Fat Ronaldo. Can't comment on the rest as I haven't seen them play. His stats are fecking ridiculous.

I'm not going to bother. You can think what you want, we live in a free world.

When he retires as a Real Madrid and European all time top scorer, we'll talk again. Too bad goals mean nothing for you though, only when Messi scores or assists them of course.

You've named all great players by the way, but only 3 or 4 can be compared to Ronaldo due to position and most importantly, ability.

I never said goals mean nothing, but it doesn't determine how great a player is, to say otherwise is foolish. Who's the greater player, Lampard or Iniesta?

Depends whether you're talking about career or peak. Cristiano has the best career but Brazilian Ronaldo is the best at their respective peaks, in my view.

Both mate, Cristiano has been at his "peak" for a few seasons now. He's had the better career, score more goals and will go down as the better player. You can argue if Ronaldo had stayed fit and dedicated throughout his career he might have been better but that didn't happen which makes the argument mute.

Where does he rank among the best Real Madrid players? I still think Di Stefano is untouchable, but who are your other greatest players?

That's not what I mean. I mean comparing Ronaldo's Barça and pre-injury Inter performances with current Cristiano and he comes out on top. For longevity it's obviously the Portuguese, and when ranking them overall again Cristiano because of said longevity.

All in my opinion, of course.

Ahhh I see, thought your post was more what he "could have been". But that's fair.

Well, if he keeps up this pace and stays for a season or two he's going to be the all time top scorer, so he'll be up there with the greatest ever at our club.

Di Stefano, Zidane, Raul, Puskas, (Brazilian) Ronaldo, Hierro, Hugo Sanchez are some of the players that spring to mind. People will fully appreciate what a player C. Ronaldo was when he'll be retired.

Vato, i'm curious, what makes him such a great player in your eyes, or enough to make you laugh off the notion someone doesn't think he's one of the top 10 of all time?

Genuine question.

Definitely among the best 15-30 players who live in or around Madrid!

Pace, shooting ability, heading ability, vision, killer instinct in front of goal. It's the whole package really. He's just a freak of nature.

His will to be the best and train harder than everyone to become it, is something that should be admired aswell imo. He's living his dream because he's worked his balls off for it.

Let me return you the same question, why do you think he isn't? Is it just because of his petulance on the pitch sometimes? Are you more of a Barca fan (genuine question btw)?

Obviously the all-time stuff depends completely on the criteria you employ... I personally go along with @TheShedEnd 's view in the sense that I'd put Cristiano somewhere outside of the AT top-10, in the 10-15 range. Since the WC I would also say that Messi has sneaked into the top-10 once and for all, for me (5-10 range). They're at a point though where it's getting harder and harder to go up unless they perform outstanding feats on the grandest of stages.
