Cristiano Ronaldo

I think we will get him...not because we need him...but because of marketing and merchandising.

...and he will still be useful of course on the football field.
If we sign him it's because he's a great player, not because he's marketable.

If anyone thinks that Ronaldo is suddenly going to get worse after his next birthday they're crazy. If we have a chance to sign Ronaldo we need to take it. Simple as. Ronaldo is that good (and will keep being so until he's about 34/35 like Zidane, Figo etc.)

This. Hat trick today!

No dribbles, 8 shots, 3 goals - he's the best finisher in Europe. Better off ball movement than Falcao, right place at the right time, and a danger from anywhere in range of goal. Once his pace starts to go he could very easily move up front.

Only if he changes his mentality. He has stated multiple times that he doesn´t like playing up front. It was the reason for falling out with Queiroz and Mourinho. Paulo Bento didn´t dare to try it.

8 goals in 7 games, he's going to score 50+ goals for the 5th season in a row isn't he? Deffo one of the top 3 players of all time.

Whether or not he thrives in the CF role will basically come down to the quality and quantity of service he'll get. He's already been playing like a CF for the most part since 2011, except of course for doing all the ungrateful leg work for which they have Benzema. Don't think he'd excell at that.

Take today's game for a perfect example; nearly nothing in the categories that you'd typically expect for a winger/wide forward and a lot of stuff that is typical of CFs.

0 dribbles and key passes, no crosses attempted, only really a high number of touches (59) and passes (43) which is usually more indicative of a deeper player (than a CF).
8 shots (5 on target), 3 goals, 2 offsides, 3 turn-overs, reads a lot like CF stats.

No he isn't

How many more times are people going to come out with that tripe everytime he scores. He's a fantastic player but alot more a goalscorer. I'd say like Gerd Muller, different players, and both brilliant, but more renknown for being devastating finishers.

In terms of talent Pele, Maradona and Messi are streets ahead of him, and there are probably a fair few more too.

Streets ahead....Do you just use hyperbole for the sake of your own argument or do you lack objectivity?

How many times are you going to come out with your same tripe. Every single time someone praises Ronaldo, you pull the same old "He's a fantastic goalscorer, but Messi is streets ahead of him" BS.

Secondly I'd agree with Messi yes, but Ronaldo is miles better than both Pele and Maradona.

I cba for this debate, it happens every 2 weeks, I'm going to leave it at that.

If they both retired now it'd be Pele, Maradona, Messi and Ronaldo in about 10 years after they retire when people keep mentioning them to sound like football experts. Crazy thing is that would be if they retired now, they both have 200+ goals in them and at the rate they score that would make them only 33 and 31 so maybe 300-400 goals left each.

My GOAT list would be Pele, Messi, Ronaldo, Maradona.. this whole prestige of winning the world cup is nonsense, especially when you don't play for a world class team.

Goals win games simple as, even Pele is arguable considering the quality of the league and the no offside rule.

Well they are. Creativie geniuses as well as goalscorers, technically they are alot better, go on, tell me otherwise.

Before I start, I'm not saying Ronaldo is better than the Pele's etc or vice versa.

When people say Pele is the best ever or Maradonna or whoever, have you actually seen them play? Or do you just go off what the older people have told you? No doubt they were great, there is a reason they have such a reputation. But when people say "they were the best ever" and have seen the same 5/10 clips of the player its fecking nonsense. Add to that it's practically impossible to compare players from different era's. Football changes constantly. Back in the days of Pele and co I'd very much doubt they had the same technology we do now for scouting and training etc. That works both ways of course in defenders couldn't prepare for him, or him for defenders.

I just think the idea of comparing two players from very different generations and saying one is better than the other is complete rubbish. It's impossible. As is someone who has never seen a player actually play say "they were the best ever"

Yes it will. Ronaldo's going to go down as one of the all time great goalscorers, case in point today. You look back over the course of all his goals and they're mainly one touch finishes or getting himself in the right areas to grab the goals.

In terms of being a better player (Note NOT goalscoring), he's behind a number of past greats, not even up for debate. If we're discussing Maradona here, Ronaldo can't dribble better than him, produce better passes, galvanise a team like Maradona could, be the creative hub of the side and Maradona's goals may be less in numbers, but far greater in quality.

It's a ludicrous thing to say. Messi's put into the mix for a reason, even with all those goals he's a phenomenal all round player, a genius. Ronaldo isn't. He's top player and probably the most devastating goalscorer since Muller, i'd stick him ahead of Messi on that one simply because he is a danger anywhere around the area, Messi won't get into positions to head the ball or drill it from 25 yards out.

The only player in history that is better than Ronaldo is Messi. You're just overrating Maradona and the rest of the legends because of nostalgia. His dribbling in his United years is almost as good as Maradona, but productivity is on a whole other level.

The day Ronaldo and Messi retire is the day when people will stop underrating them.

Hush about Messi here. Discuss Ronaldo all you want but that's it. Dig up that shit storm Messi v Ronaldo thread if you want to blubber about who is better.

He never has and never will be as good a dribbler as Maradona was, he was extra special. Also, is this the same Cristiano Ronaldo who was labelled an overrated one trick pony for half his time at Utd?

He was superb in 2006/07, much more of a goalscorer in 2007/08, went missing for half the season in 2008/09. When it's all said and done he'll be remembered for his productivity at Real Madrid, not at Utd. Speaking of which, most people remember his 42 goal season at Utd rather than the 2006/07 season when his all round play was better.

Like I said before, scoring goals seems to be the barometer of how good a player is now, which is completely wrong.

It's almost as if goals are the manner by which football matches are determined. Fancy passes/minute is not.

Ronaldo is up there in the greatest of all time tier, obviously between that top tier it's impossible to truly determine who's better but I believe that without Messi, Ronaldo would be considered the greatest of all time(cos he'd have won about 6/7 straight Ballon D'Ors) and vice versa for Messi.

Has to be awarded world player of the year again for the sheer insanity of his goal scoring record. There is CL and cup win too. Ideally someone from Germany winning this year will be nice given those players were good for respective clubs, but no one stands out than others by great margin among Germans.
3rd world player of the year will be no more than deserved for a player who has cemented his place among all time greats long ago and is improving on it progressively.

Viva.

He was on top before Messi. He's on top (now) with him. He'll be there after him too.

TBE.

24 hattricks. Holy feck

A United player scoring hatrick these days is nothing short of a miracle. One player. 5 years. 24 hatricks. Insane.

First player on my best xi teamsheet for sure.
