What's with all this "best United player ever" stuff? Ronaldo's been one of the best, but George Best for one was better.

How many times have you seen Best to be able to play.

Best played when football was at a lower standard, I mean ffs these men used to go out on the piss constantly, had terrible diets and poor fitness levels compared to the athletes nowadays.

Ronaldo is the best player this club has ever had. The standard of football is the best it's ever been, and he's just phenomenal. If he came back we'd win the league. The sheer amount of goals he adds to the team.
Is he feck

i hate this argument. if you transport george best to today he'd be using all the facilities and conditioning modern players use and transport ronaldo to then and he wouldnt have a fecking six pack. its all relative.

Doesn't matter. The GOATs always get replaced one day.

No he wouldn't. Best never had Ronaldos determination to succeed.

He also played when breaking a players leg would get you a yellow card, footballs were very heavy and about 10 times heavier again when wet, football boots were like DR Martins boots with studs. How would Ronaldo play back then?

Doesn't matter, everyone played under those circumstances. The games changed, and adapted since then, the players of nowadays are ahead of the players of yesteryear. The pace the game is played at is so far ahead.

in that case everybpdy in every sport is better than their predecessors. maradona included, niki lauda included. absolutely ridiculous statement. by your logic jordan hederson is better than george best.

absurd.

 Does everyone not play under the same circumstances today then?

I echo the sentiment that Ronaldo is the best player we've ever had. It certainly isn't a laughable notion anyway. When all is said and done he will go down as more of an all time footballing great than even Best and Charlton. Him and Messi's goalscoring numbers are almost unprecedented, we're truly lucky to be witnessing this era of two such legendary players. So yes a United legend but in a different way to some of the others.

Edit: It would be very reasonable to argue that in just his United years we have had better players though. So I guess it depends how you want to frame it.

Surely Woodward levelled up enough during this summer to attempt the "Buy Ronaldo" move without failing spectacularly?

Get on it, Ed. After di Maria and Falcao, there's pretty much only one player out there who will give you a bigger muppet rush.

Best, Edwards, Charlton. Ronaldo maybe the best player (talent wise) of the modern era but he's not the best the club has ever had, in truth even that's debatable.

It's a nice myth but I doubt anyone deep down truly believes it, with any sort of level headedness. For a start 99% of us have no fecking clue as we never had the honour of seeing him play. The poor lad was just 21 when he died, do you really think its likely he was better than current Ronaldo?

I hate when people say that when talking about players in the past. It's all relative - the reason players like Maradona's name stands out from the past is because he was the best out of the pool of players playing at that time. He wasn't the best because players were slower, or the pace of the game was slower, he was the best because he was better than 98% of players. It doesn't matter how fast or slow the play was, because if everyone is going at 80km/hr and you go at 100km/hr you are faster.

Don't like him.

To be a United legend, you have to see the club as the pinnacle of football. Instead, he sees Real as the pinnacle of the game. Not to mention the fact that he agitated for a move to get there. If he comes back to Manchester I might change my mind, but as things stand I hope he fails at everything football related.

Very well put.

Genuinely think Man Utd and Fergie and the United players, staff, fans etc are the only ones he truly loves in football.

They're the club I believe are really in his heart.

Boss comment la. I couldn't agree more.

You mean Cristiano 'I am a slave at Man Utd' Ronaldo?

Utter rubbish. He's Real Madrid through and through, United is the team he became sensational at but he only have us about 3 years where he was off the scale sensational. He always knew that as soon as he achieved everything here he would go onto Real Madrid, not interested in becoming a total legend here...Real Madrid was the team he always wanted.

Cristiano Ronaldo interview: Manchester United are the club of my heart, I loved it there... my wish is to go back one day
  • Cristiano Ronaldo would like to return to Manchester United one day
  • Ronaldo was sold to Real Madrid for a then record £80 million in 2009
  • He won three Premier League titles and Champions League with United
  • Portuguese says that Alex Ferguson is only manager he would call a friend

Wot.

Best, Edwards, Charlton. Ronaldo maybe the best player (talent wise) of the modern era but he's not the best the club has ever had, in truth even that's debatable.

Best- Maybe technique and skill wise he's better but Ronaldo smashes him in almost everything else, speed, power, heading, goalscoring, record breaking etc etc. Best never applied his talent to the maximum and a lot of it was wasted with his off pitch antics. Ronaldo's attitude to succeed and better himself as a athlete is far greater than Best's ever was.

Charlton- Haha no. When the man himself admits Cristiano is a better player, it means Cristiano is a better player.

Edwards- Do you honesty think a 21 year old Duncan Edwards is better than C Ronaldo right now? C'mon on now. I'm pretty sure he would have been an absolutely immense player and probably the greatest ever (?) with the way everyone speaks about him, but unfortunately he passed away at 21, so no one witnessed him come into his prime like Ronaldo is going now.

Look, this is all relative. I'm sure a lot of older fans prefer Best, Charlton etc and many younger fans probably prefer Ronaldo (Older fans can prefer Ronaldo too, obviously, and vice versa), and 5 year old United fans will most likely be saying someone who isn't born yet. It's all preference, there is no right or wrong answer.

I don't think he considers real the pinnacle of the game or a step above United. He might but I've never directly head him say that. If I'm not wrong he was a Real supporter from childhood and always dreamed of playing there. It was a matter of when and not if he left for Real.

Didnt quite like the way he agitated for a move but he respected(still does) Fergie enough to stay for an extra season. He can be quite twattish at times but he was incredibly passionate about the game and United as well. He was brilliantly entertaining whilst bringing a lot of success to United.

After leaving United he had only good things to say about us and had even advised Di Maria to move here as well. Shows he wasnt just bsing for the fans and genuinely likes United. I will always like him for those reasons alone.

Ronaldo's career has now surpassed Best and Charlton. Whether he was better than them for United is debatable, though. Don't think there is much in it between any of them.

And anyone who wins the Ballon D'Or while here has to go down as a club "legend" in my view.

I've tried buying him for United on FM every year since he turned 30, I finally got him at 33 and it was the most disappointing buy I've ever made on FM. I still played him every game though.

he'd still garuntee 30+ a season till he's 34 lets be honest. getting him back and a central midfielder and the worlds our oyster.

I'm not surprised to hear his comments, the love he has for the club is undeniable especially when you consider his demeanor when we played Madrid at OT. I think he will return to the club someday but it will be as an ambassador that will help us recruit players in the next 10+ years.

Imagine being a United fan who dislikes Ronaldo... Jeez!

The key difference between him and Rooney for me - if you overlook the chasm in ability - is that, yes, Ronaldo engineered a move away from the club, but he was far less conceited in his behaviour. He said it was his dream and he went and did it. Rooney put us through the mill, threatened to go to a bitter rival, all in the name of a pay rise. Ronaldo's motives were more laudable, in my opinion.

I find it quite instructive that Fergie still loves Ronaldo, but his relationship with Rooney is completely fractured - says a lot about their respective levels of professionalism. Don't seem to remember Ronaldo needing a special programme to shed the fat during pre-season, for instance.

Just out of interest, (may help kill the myth) how many wingers were top class between the ages 30-34?

You won't find many.

That said, Ronaldo's not been a winger for a good while now. As he ages further, he's going to gravitate towards the centre of the field. I'd say he's got another 2-3 peak years, then another two to three years of being a very good player. With his attitude and physical conditioning, no reason he can't be getting 20 goals at the age of 35.

Lets be realistic, there's more a chance he'll wind up as an ambassador for Real than United. He's had a more illustrious career there.

Shouldn't of signed that new contract Ronnie, could of been back a lot sooner.

He'll probably go to the states but yeah, there's definately a chance he'll return to Manchester one day*.
