Absolutely.

Pele and Maradona had a bigger impact and better careers , for several reasons, not least where they were born , but George Best was better at football than either.

The Cruyff thing sums it up for me, only George Best would do it. Pele wouldn't, as egotistical as he is, even Maradona wouldnt, neither would messi or ronaldo for that matter. And lets not forget, when he announced to a reporter before an international match he would nutmeg Cruyff, the Dutchman had just been voted world player of the year, they were perhaps the best side in the world at the time, and George Best was unfit and probably half drunk.
And yet he went onto the pitch, got the ball, went sideways across the pitch to the other wing (dribbling past 2 players as he went), just so he could get to where Cruyff was, and then he nutmegged him.

That was the man in decline. And he did it just because he could. Put Best in the England or Brazil squads of the 1966 - 1970 era and no one would question him being the best ever.

Everyone is entitled to an opinion, but where do you get that from? His present FIFA arse-licking persona? As a player he was selfless and 100% team-oriented. He wouldn't have done that simply because once on the pitch he was a machine, the model professional, he wouldn't go around fecking about with nutmegs to prove a point.

Love Best and that story to bits, what a character... but how can you turn it into a negative on other players? Realy weird.

The Oracle has once again spoken:

Irwin has lost it this Summer...

I have now completely replaced my image of him as a footballer with one of him sitting behind a computer and being the King of all Transfer Muppets.

I think you can debate Best being the most talented ever, but achievements figure into who the actual best player is personally. The others you mention outstrip Best for me even at club level. Nutmegging Cruyff just shows he has skill, not that he is a better player. Could he dominate from all over the pitch and organise a team of great players like Cruyff did with Ajax and Holland? They all have different strengths and merits, personally I feel it is hard to pick the best player ever it comes down to preference.

Good post. I doubt that you can see somewhere else than in a United forum that Best was the best player ever or that he was better than Pele, Maradona, Cruyff, Messi etc. About nutmegging it has become such a deal that is ridiculous. O'Shea nutmeg Figo, does that make him a better player. I am sure that Obertan can nutmeg Messi.

I wouldn't be surprised if he signed the new deal, its what I expect to happen.

However, Marca is Perez' mouthpiece and Ronaldo hasn't been all too happy with their reporting this summer. Not the best source.

because he's staying with Madrid for life mate

1) this thread is in the football forum, not the transfer forum so it won't be closed as it is mainly for the discussion of Ronaldo the player rather than whether he's going to another club or not.
2) until the news is on Real Madrid's website, he hasn't signed a new contract.

I still believe Kingjonno is on to something. That story about RvP must show some light towards this deal. And do people believe Marca? Really?

Ah yes, didn't we make a €10 million down payment on him or something? Wonder if we ever got it back.

Where to start.

The egotistical comment was describing maradona, not Pele.

I also didnt turn anything into a negative on the other two, I merely showed an example of what I said earlier in the thread. Best did things with a football no one else ever did, before or since, which is why I think he was the best ever. That he was better doesnt make Pele or Maradon any lesser of players, indeed, I have repeatedly said that who had the best football career is a toss up between them.

Also to whomever said O'Shea nutmeged Figo, way to miss the point,

What was special about what George Best did, was that he said before the game he would do it, and did. Just to prove a point.

As said, there was nothing "wrong" about your opinion, just what seemed an unfair comment on Pelé, which you've now clarified.

Best himself was very much of the opinion Puskas could do anything with a football too:

"I was with (Bobby) Charlton, (Denis) Law and Puskás, we were coaching in a football academy in Australia. The youngsters we were coaching did not respect him including making fun of his weight and age...We decided to let the guys challenge a coach to hit the crossbar 10 times in a row, obviously they picked the old fat one. Law asked the kids how many they thought the old fat coach would get out of ten. Most said less than five. I said ten. The old fat coach stepped up and hit nine in a row. For the tenth shot he scooped the ball in the air, bounced it off both shoulders and his head, then flicked it over with his heel and cannoned the ball off the crossbar on the volley. They all stood in silence then one kid asked who he was, I replied, To you, his name is Mr. Puskás." – George Best

Don't know, but everyone reporting he has signed are all sourcing it from Marca, I wouldn't believe it until he comes out and says he signed. I mean, he just did a press conference saying the rumours were false for god's sake!

We're in an age where we presume a denial is an admission!

See Bale, Rooney, Suarez scenarios for just 3!

No updates at all today? Silence is a good sign, its on!

Exactly ten years ago.

Thats quality!

So he's playing in the US in an hour. Chances of him somehow being revealed tomorrow = zero.
