MANCHESTER UNITED met with Nike officials yesterday to plot a mega bid for Cristiano Ronaldo.
An Old Trafford return would cost at least £65million.
And it would reunite Ronaldo with Wayne Rooney, who Alex Ferguson has vowed will be a United player next season.
The Nike representatives flew in to London to also talk about the renewal of their shirt sponsorship agreement with the Red Devils.
But top of the agenda was talks about how they could help the club get Ronaldo.
Nike is desperate to get the Portuguese star back to the biggest football club that wear their logo.
They currently sponsor Ronaldo in terms of boots and sportswear but are frustrated that he runs out in an adidas shirt with Real Madrid every week.
They believe their global brand would be even stronger with him back in a Nike United shirt.
United would need to put together a deal of £65m plus a player like Nani to tempt Real to sell this summer.
But they could have to go further for a player they sold to Real for £80m almost four years ago.
Nike want to help in any way they can.
Their current 13-year shirt deal with United is worth £303m and expires in 2015.
United would be looking for at least double that figure and maybe even three times the next time around.
Nike could even renegotiate the deal early so United have the cash this summer.
There could also be a greater incentive written into any new sponsorship contract for Ronaldo based on him being at United.
The club also know with Ronaldo back in a United shirt the value of future sponsorship deals with other companies would increase.
SunSport has already revealed Ronaldo would be willing to snub £500,000 a week from Paris St Germain to take half that amount at Old Trafford.
Ronaldo was bowled over by the reception he received from United’s fans on Tuesday ahead of the Champions League clash with Real.
He scored what proved to be the winner — and refused to celebrate.
The 28-year-old has two years left on his deal in Madrid.
He has refused to accept a new contract — and the Spanish giants know his value will tumble as his deal runs down.
An extra incentive for Ronaldo could be linking up with Rooney again.
Boss Fergie axed Rooney for Tuesday’s game with Real. But he says that Rooney understood his decision and that there is no problem.
Ferguson said: “There is absolutely no issue between Wayne Rooney and I.
“To suggest we don’t talk to each other on the training ground is absolute nonsense.
“He understood the reasons for not playing him and that was completely tactical.
“Wayne will be here next year. You have my word on that. I have no issues at all with the player and he’ll be involved on Sunday.”
Ferguson faces his old foe Rafa Benitez in the FA Cup tomorrow.
Benitez is struggling in his interim managerial role at Chelsea but Fergie said: “I’m not going to kick anyone when they’re lying down. It’s not my style.”
Sir Alex Ferguson has promised Wayne Rooney will not be sold as Manchester United prepared an attempt to re-sign Cristiano Ronaldo.
United manager Ferguson came out fighting in response to suggestions Rooney, 27, could be on his way out this summer.
Despite interest from Paris Saint-Germain — who believe they have been given encouragement over a £24million deal — Ferguson said: ‘There’s absolutely no issue between Wayne Rooney and me. He will be here next year.’

Sensational: Manchester United are preparing a move for their former star Cristiano Ronaldo
It is understood United officials discussed a deal to bring Ronaldo back at a meeting with kit manufacturers Nike on Friday.
They were due to discuss extending their sponsorship deal, and also on the agenda was the subject of funding a bid to sign Real Madrid’s Ronaldo, who they sold to the Spanish club in 2009.
Ferguson has played down talk of a return for the forward and it remains unlikely, but it is understood the finer details of financing a move were considered yesterday at the meeting in London.
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini thinks former City target Rooney will stay at Old Trafford despite being dropped for Tuesday’s defeat by Real Madrid.
He said: ‘It is difficult for him to leave. I can understand Rooney would be upset if he didn’t play but these things happen.’
Ferguson said during his Friday press conference: '[Rooney] will be here next year. You can have my word on that.
Back in Red: United executives are understood to be discussing the possibility of a deal
Apologetic: Ronaldo said his return to Old Trafford was very emotional
'The issue you're all going on about in the papers is absolute rubbish. There is absolutely no issue between Wayne Rooney and I. To suggest we don't talk to each other on the training ground is absolute nonsense.
'He understood the reasons for not playing him and that was completely tactical. And I think I was right. We don't always get it right but I think we did get it right.
'Danny Welbeck is the best player we have in terms of operating in a double role. We had to choke Xabi Alonso's ability to control the game, which Danny did, and that took away Alonso's control of the game and his ability to go further forward and be an attacking player.
'We don't always get it right but we definitely did on Tuesday.
Going nowhere: Wayne Rooney (right) will be at Old Trafford next season whether Ronaldo returns or not
No issues: Sir Alex Ferguson's (left) decision not to play Wayne Rooney was purely tactical
'I left out Shinji Kagawa after he scored a hat-trick. I thought I would get more stick for that.'
But speaking midweek after he helped dump his former club out of the Champions League, it was clear that United still hold a big place in Ronaldo's heart.
'It was emotional in both games, especially tonight, it was unbelievable,' he said to Sky Sports.
'But anyway I helped my team to score one goal home and away. I feel happy inside because Madrid got through but on the other hand I feel a little bit sad because Manchester United deserved (to win).
'But it's part of the football. It's feelings that stay in there and this doesn't change things.'
Words: Ferguson was speaking at his Friday press conference
Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini added his two pence on the former City target Rooney.
‘I think that Rooney is one of the best strikers in Europe but I think it is difficult he can leave Man United,' he said.
‘I don’t know this situation. I can understand Rooney would be upset if he didn’t play but these are things that can happen in every team. After one week it’s finished.’
Still smiling: Rooney in training on Friday
Having his say: Manchester City manager Roberto Mancini, who was previously linked with a deal with Rooney, has said he can't see the striker leaving United
Mancini admitted that United crashing out of Europe is bad news for City, with Ferguson’s team now able to focus on keeping a 12-point lead in the Premier League and winning the FA Cup.
‘It was difficult before the game against Real Madrid and now it’s clear it is worse for us,’ he added. ‘Now they can put all their strength in the championship.
‘I think they have an advantage because 12 points are too much but our job is only to try until the end of the season.’
Ignoring the for sale chat for the moment, as I don't think he is. Not yet, anyway.
This story started after the match with one of the Spanish TV reporters at the game saying that Ronaldo ended up with Giggs' shirt and showing him walking through the mixed zone with it in his hand. It's been reported in a few places since, including some United boards etc.
Anyway, assuming it's true, here's Ronaldo with Giggsy's 1000th match shirt (in an asda bag?) at the airport.
Do you reckon he tried it on when he got home?
What exactly makes all these tabloids think Real will sell Ronnie for less than they bought him, it's not like he has been in decline since he joined them.
Why would Ronaldo have Giggsy's shirt? Surely that's something special to RG?
You don't pay millions for how good a player is, you pay for how good he can be for you. Real bought a 24 year old Ronnie.

If I win the EuroMillions, I'm buying Ronaldo and gifting him to Fergie

I read somewhere in the Spanish media that Giggsy's shirt is signed by the whole squad, and it was a gift from Giggsy to Ronny.
Well it's probably a bit more complex and things like marketability of a player and the demand of the club who sells play an important role as well and I'm fairly certain that Real won't sell him for less than 100m - 150m €.
Of course in the end it's totally depended how willing Real is to sell him and what their minimum demand for him is.
