Cristiano Ronaldo

That's the worst I've seen Ronaldo play in months (possible exception for their match in Granada where he scored an own goal) - yet, as he said after the match, he did his job and the team went through.

In terms of how we played him, we did it exactly right - we stifled Ozil and Alonso and the feed system collapsed and we made sure there was always someone around to close Ronaldo down before he really started to run.

That said, I do think the emotion got to him. He looked like his concentration was off. It takes a ridiculous amount of confidence and focus to play the way he does, I don't think he had it last night, We've seen that performance before from him in games for us where the emotional level was too high - like the City game on the 50th anniversary.

The difference was that last night he scored, which said more about his positional sense than his overall performance.

Some more comments from Ronaldo after the game:

Cristiano Ronaldo has left the door open for a return to Manchester United after firing Real Madrid in to the Champions League quarter-finals on a “very emotional” night at Old Trafford.

Real Madrid knocked Sir Alex Ferguson’s side out of Europe's elite competition on Tuesday night with a 3-2 aggregate victory thanks to Ronaldo’s second-half strike on his first game at Old Trafford since his world record £80 million transfer in 2009.

AS IT HAPPENED

SLIDESHOW: Relive Manchester United's elimination at the hands of Real Madrid Ronaldo received a hero’s reception from the home crowd and admitted it was a night of mixed emotions against his former club - who he has refused to rule out representing again despite insisting he is happy in Spain.

Ronaldo said: “The future you never know but the supporters here [at United] and the club, it's massive. The future you never know but at this moment I'm very happy at Real Madrid and I want to be here.

“It was an unbelievable night. It was very emotional. What the supporters did for me was massive, I’m never going to forget this moment. I don’t have words for it.

“On one hand I’m happy for Madrid to go through but on the other side I’m sad because it’s not easy to forget. This was my home for six years, the people were very nice with me. I came here as a child.

“It’s quite strange - in both games I felt a little shy in my game. It’s a feeling you cannot explain - it’s just a feeling.

“I went to the dressing room to speak to all the players, to the coach, to the president, to the Glazers.”

Real Madrid booked their place in the quarter-finals with a 2-1 victory on the night having drawn 1-1 in the first leg at the Santiago Bernabeu, where Ronaldo got los Blancos' goal with a fine header.

Progression on Tuesday completed an excellent week for the Spanish giants in which they beat bitter rivals Barcelona twice in four days, first in the Copa del Rey and then La Liga.

“It was an unbelievable week,” Ronaldo added. “We won both games against Barcelona and now Manchester United. It was great. We are in good shape, we want to carry on like that because we want to try to win this competition.”

I know its from Goal, but the comments about him feeling shy in his game seemed to fit with how his performance looked to me.

Kinda funny to compare his attitude towards United compared to Keane's last night...

pretty simple. ronaldo left, got his wish, and fergie let him go.

roy got done in by fergie and roy being roy, will hold a grudge.

i prattle on about ronnie coming home and what not, but lets not compare the two. completely different situations and roy is much more special to me as a utd supporter. i utterly dislike how he was shifted out of the club and should have been allowed to heal and play for us again before parting terms amicably.

Did he not celebrate vs Lisbon at OT? I seem to remember him not doing so in Lisbon.

I wouldn't really call it a celebration. It was basically a shrug of the shoulder and then the whole team just crowded him. But that was in part due to the fact he had struck the ball so sweetly, even he might have been surprised and you cant really fault him for that.

A bit extra:

Speaking to Marca, Ronaldo said: 'I'm sorry for Manchester United but I've done my job, and I'm happy for the whole team.'
He also confessed to being weighed down by the atmosphere, adding: 'For the first time in my career I was beaten by the atmosphere. I did not feel comfortable, they were too many feelings, the kick-off ovation.'
The Portuguese's goal, after which he showed little emotion, knocked the stuffing out of United, who had earlier seen Nani bizarrely sent off for a clash with former Liverpool defender Alvaro Arbeloa.
Reflecting on the subdued response to his crucial role in the match, Ronaldo offered an apology to the United fans and explained why he felt unable to revel in the moment.
He said: 'I did not celebrate out of respect, for the love that people gave me all those years here. Those feelings are not forgotten.

'It is true that I had a strange feeling. It will be the same if I play some day against Madrid. Manchester is my second home, but the most important thing was to go to Madrid.'
Immediately after the game, Ronaldo told Sky Sports: 'It was emotional in both games, especially tonight, it was unbelievable.
'I don't have words to explain what I feel. I just have one word to say it is unbelievable.
'What the supporters did made me feel quite shy because in my opinion in both games I didn't play like I play all the time.

Nobody can have a bad feeling over Ronaldo, he has acted professional and did more than enough to show his love for our club.

He didnt take the piss, dive around or try to get us in trouble - just got on and scored goals, what he is paid to do.

He is a class act and i am glad to see how well he is doing.

Would have him back anyday, just glad his knock out goal didnt have the same gloss it would have done if we were still with 11 men.

A slight detour.

Nani's sending off and some people's comments about the difference between European refs and PL refs made me think back to an incident in La Liga last year. Ronaldo goes to head a ball, the opposing defender kicks it - indirect freekick for dangerous play and not even a yellow card. I've even found the gifs

roy got done in by fergie and roy being roy, will hold a grudge.

Roy didnt get "done in" by anyone. His mouth and arrogance got him into trouble and as he was in decline as a player by then there was no need what so ever to put up with it. No one made him do that video.......he just has and has always had the self control of a toddler.

:wenger:

Seriously so much wrong in that post. Roy got done in by Roy, and as Fergie showed in the years later he might the right call by getting rid of someone who had the potential to be a damaging effect on the dressing room.

If you act like a prick, you will get shafted.

Keane is definitely very bitter. It was oozing out of him last night, he looked delighted Madrid made it through.

Beginning to get a feeling that he will come back.. He wins the CL -what else is left in Madrid? they probably won't match Barca..

He "went and spoke to the Players, the Coach, the President and the Glazers?!".

The Treble might be off but bring Ronaldo home is ON! He's instigating it himself!

He'll sign a new contract ladies don't run away with yourselves.

I don't think he'll sign a new contract at Madrid. When does his contract run out? 2014 Summer?

If that is the case, I can see him letting it run down and join United on the free.

I can really see that.

I can really see that.

I regularly see a naked Kelly Brooke spread eagle on my bed, begging me to make sweet love to her.

I don't take it as an indication of how likely it is to happen.

He should have scored the winner for us last night and not for Madrid.

Him scoring the winner made that day even shittier than it was after the unjustified red card, like getting kicked in the balls after you're already down.

Their planning had been so meticulous they had even switched around the usual team announcements to try to get into Cristiano Ronaldo's head. Usually at Old Trafford it is the away lineup read out first. On this occasion the public announcer, Alan Keegan, was under instructions to start with the home team and finish with Madrid, changing the order of names as well to leave Ronaldo strategically until last. "Kill him with love," as Patrice Evra had said. Keegan ushered in the returning hero, "the magnificent No7", in a way more reminiscent of Michael Buffer setting up a world title fight at Madison Square Garden.

Taken from Daniel Taylor's column from Guardian.

Brilliant if true. Also he was very quiet in both the legs.

Well, it was certainly smarter than us Porto fans booing him in 2009.

Credit goes to the team and tactics for stopping him. He didn't have off days, we made him ruderless.

The rest play a very small part and there is no way judging their actual affect.

He didn't have an off day in either leg, we cut off his supply. Well we did till we were down to 10 men.

Yeh, just the odd goal in each one.

tbf, when they were 2-1 up he could have got a couple more, but I got the impression he was holding back, maybe because he didn't want to make it worse than it already was.

He was very quiet. The goal doesn't mask that fact.

Also  at the bolded thing.

This is ways the suggested strategy if you want to beat RM. Choke off the supply by curtailing Alonso.

Teams with a better midfield than us like the German teams should be able to capitalise on it further.

We did well to cut off the supply but he still got plenty of the ball and was pretty wasteful in general. 10 shots in the first leg, 2 on target. 21 shots overall - more than van Persie, Rooney, Higuain and Benzema combined over the two legs - and very few of them really troubled De Gea. Still, 2 goals over two legs means he did his job.

To be fair to the comment, Ronaldo did say that he didn't feel like he played his usual game in both legs because of the occasion/opposition.

He "went and spoke to the Players, the Coach, the President and the Glazers?!".

The Treble might be off but bring Ronaldo home is ON! He's instigating it himself!

Given his frequent "only god knows" comments as to the future, is pretty smart to make sure he met with the Glazers too.

Not sure many players would have done that, to be fair.

It's true.

He described his play as "shy" - which doesn't sound far wrong to me. Yes, we stifled the feed system through Alonso and Ozil brilliantly and we closed him down well, but he still saw enough of the ball to make an uncharacteristically large number of mistakes with it. Not enough to stop him scoring, but enough to say that it was one of his worst games this season.

Here's the lead up to ko at OT, they read out United first then read out Real Madrid, in the wrong order - try 3:20 on to get a sense of the mood:
