comparing Ronaldo to Michael Jordan

Ronaldo is fantastic but it’s like praising Jordan for his free throws with today’s performance. Buddy come on. Congrats on advancing though!
It’s not just about today it’s about his whole career!

but thanks mate ;)

Nostalgic people go for Federer, nadal has gotten a lot of sway in recent years but all the metrics point to Djokovic who will finish with more slams and a superior head to head to the other 2
I gotta watch something on these guys cause this stuff interests me in Sports !

Great, he tied the international record with 109 goals now. Also his current 14 goals record in Euro would stand for longer while for sure. Perfect start for him in Euro so far. 5 goals in 3 games!

Novak Djokovic is the greatest mental giant.

Discussed this already in the ‘greatest men’s tennis player’ thread but no. People forget that Novak has been very up and down in his career. Periods of great consistency and then total troughs. He almost quit the game not too long ago. Great player though obviously.

I just find it crazy Platini scored 9 in one tournament.
True, and it’s crazy his 9 goals record has been there for so many years, even though we have so many top goalscorer in Europe all these years.

One game to decide my life I would want him on my team over anyone who has ever played the sport.

It had better not be a World Cup knockout match

But that’s a good question to ask really. If you had a game to decide your life, who would be your first pick of all the players in history? Mine would be Edson for sure.

Drogba up there for me.

His play outside the box is very average, it was much better at United. He used to be great to watch. I think Mourinho turned him into a 9. Shame.
Well he is 36, you can't expect any 36 to play like him and score as many goals as him, most of them have already retired or playing at irrelevant level. He wasn't an all action wing forward he once was during his early, mid and late 20s when he was in his physical peak, he is much more conservative these days and mostly based his game on scoring goals and making impact when it matters, and he is still very effective at what he is meant to do, and a clutch player who is very decisive in big moments.

Sorry to ruin the party, but his performance tonight was actually pretty bad, especially second half where he looked like Rashford on his worst day.

This game was more about the battle for the midfield and control of the game than the forward players. Both standout players were Pogba and Renato Sanches imo.
He didn't have a good or bad game. Scored both penalties as expected and played his part in controlling the game.

Bar that he wasn't a threat, the same way Mbappe wasn't a threat for France.

Euro 2012: Portugal are out of the Euros midway through the last group game... Ronaldo scores

Euro 2016: Portugal are out of the Euros midway through the last group game... Ronaldo scores

Euro 2020: Portugal are out of the Euros midway through the last group game... Ronaldo scores

The amount of times he shows up for us right when we need him is irreplaceable

All I saw from him second half was failed attempts to dribble and misplaced passes. Constantly giving away the ball is not my idea of contributing to control the game.

He's a 36 y/o playing at the highest level in June, after almost 13 months of non stop football and facing maybe the best defensive 5 of the world stage (Kounde, Varane, Kimpembe, Lucas and Kante).

He got 43 touches and lost the ball 3 times, compare him to Mbappe's 42 touches and 8 losses of possession. He's not 2011 Ronaldo no matter if he scores 5 more goals this tournament, but he's bringing exactly what Portugal need from him, everything else is just nitpicking

Pretty much this.

He is not the peak Ronaldo but he is still elite level in what he does.

Excellent post.

Pele or Maradona for me.

Mbappe was a much bigger culprit for giving the ball away and I see he's escaping a lot of criticism in general for his shocker today.

Reminds me of this quote:

"Why when Cristiano is involved is it always polemic?"

early on yes, Novak took too many retired matches and had a horrible mentality, but the latter 2/3 of his career he trumps every other tennis player and it’s not even close. Absolutely insane elite mentality

I agree. His step overs reminded me of when he first joined Utd. When he does the basics he still looks great, but it probably gets too boring for him. He is still vital to the way Portugal play, but all those who want him at Utd next season need their heads examining.

Painful watching him trying to dribble.
He was definitely more entertaining when he was with us, that’s for sure.
I don’t know how he just lost his dribbling and free kick abilities. They used to be one of his strengths.

He has definitely lost that agility and explosiveness. Don't know what his persistent knee troubles have had to do with it.
His freekicks have always been about percentages. Seems to have gotten worse butbI wouldn't read too much into those. Maybe the new balls are too light.

His dribbling was always about explosiveness. He's 36 with 18 years of top level football on his legs, that's not going to happen anymore. Especially in this kind of game against a team like France. If you watch him now and expect him to do the things he did 10 or 15 years ago then it's going to be disappointing every time.

The knee injury in 2014 before the World Cup was what made him change his style significantly. It's not true he changed from what he was at United right as he got to Madrid.

Dribbling is about lateral quickness and agility more than anything. He's lost those about 6 years ago

But please don't compare football players to basketball players. Basketball is unique among team sports in how much individual players impact. The only football players who were ever comparable, and even then only for brief periods, were Platini at euro '84 and Maradona in '86

He is 36 and a very tall player unlike most quick feet dribblers. He isn't gonna dribble like he used to but even now he's a better dribbler than many around

If he wasn't plagued with injuries throughout his career. Nadal would have blown the other 2 away on the grand slam front. He's the greatest for me.
His absolute prime was shortlived due to the injuries but what a force of nature he was in that time.

He did change his style though. He became a lot more economical in his movement and played higher up the pitch than at Utd. He had to, he couldn't have 70 goal seasons playing the way he played for us. Anelka outscored him during his last season here after all.
