He’s more of an great athlete than a great footballer nowadays.
He's not got that agility anymore but this is a serious disservice to him. The man is a ridiculous footballer, still.

The likes of Zizou, Figo, Seedorf etc, players he grew up watching, were long retired at the age he is now. To still score 30+ league goals per season at the age he is, is unheard of.

I feel like there’s a niche cult who made it their New Years resolution to downplay anything Ronaldo does. Guy is an all time Goat, it’s ludicrous the amount of posts people dedicate to shitting on him.

In terms of top level football, he is already top scorer of all time. Here's the list:

1. Ronaldo 783 goals
2. Pele 767 goals (or 769)
3. Romario 761 goals
4. Puskas 759 goals
5. Messi 745 goals
6. Bican 743 goals
7. Jimmy Jones 659 goals
8. Muller 640 goals

If also includes those official goals scored in regional league and youth/amateur/reserve games, Helmchen (982), Bican (948), Puskas (808) are still ahead of him. Here's the list:

1. Helmchen 982 goals
2. Bican 948 goals
3. Puskas 808 goals
4. Ronaldo 801 goals
5. Deak 794 goals
6. Romario 780 goals
7. Pele 775 goals
8. Messi 774 goals

If also include all goals scored in all unofficial games (club friendlies, unofficial amateur/reserve level football etc), obviously there were quite a few who scored well over 1000 goals, such as Tichy (1912), Bican (1812), Helmchen (1610), Puskas (1567), Muller (1483), Bene (1412), Deak (1369), Pele (1301) etc

But I don't really think those club friendlies or youth/amatuer/regional goals matters, as they are in very poor standard. To the extreme, Its just like scoring in your own backyard, or something.

So in short, it really depends on what criteria you are looking it. In terms of most relevant criteria, if we only count official goals scored in top level (excluding youth games, reserve games, amateur/regional level etc) Ronaldo is already the top scorer of all time.
It was professional football I was looking for but thanks for the detailed reply!

Given the road they had in 2016, they can hardly complain now.

2016 was the only time we got an easy draw since Ronaldo’s been in the team. Every other tournament has been a nightmare draw pretty much but at least we made the most out of it in 2016

That's not fair, I scored more than 1500 in my backyard and I'm not even featured on that list.

But in case of Pelé, the friendlies he included were among the most competitive matches in the world at that time.

That's why comparing across eras is somewhat pointless. Pelé scoring against e. g. AC Milan or Real Madrid in friendlies that were held because there was no real international competition at place at that time, it is probably more "valid" than Messi or Cristiano putting three or four past Granada or Real Sociedad while the gap between top and bottom tier teams has become much larger than it used to be.

People are too obsessed with stats. Looking at them is fun as long as you don't use them as a measuring stick.

The guy is just awesome.

One thing I'm surprised nobody mentions is how hard it must be to make the conscious decision to not get involved in play until the right moments. It must be so hard to stay mentally sharp / focused when being so disciplined to not follow your instincts to go looking for the ball / chances. If we look at Harry Kane for example (Great player), he can't resist the temptation to go looking for the ball even when it's not required.

Ronaldo is such a clever player, he knows exactly when to do for the good of the team and the will to win carried him through.

I do agree it's pointless, especially because you can't compare the level of competition of today vs back then or the technology/information available.
Your average player today is miles ahead of the average player back then and that's not because they have more talent or a higher ceiling but because modern football and technology allow the players to play closer to their full potential and clubs have way stricter rules to make sure that players maximize their potential.

For example, based on the Maradona lifestyle, he wouldn't even be a football player if he was born in the Messi/Ronaldo generation. Even if there was some club that would allow or ignore his lifestyle (although the drug habit would be a deal-breaker anyway), he still wouldn't be able to keep up with the modern game.

Of course that's all hypothetical because having access to more information/technology and living under stricter rules, could completely change the kind of person he was and the way he lived his life.

If your backyard is big enough for a size of football pitch and there's 11 vs 11 players of sunday league standard, or even from your friends and relatives, playing in full a 90 mins match, with your drunken dad refereeing the match and your mum and sister managing both teams, it could be counted as well.

Football has changed enormously over the years, that's correct. It's a bit pointless to discuss what could've been - Maradona's or Best's personalities might have developed differently at modern clubs, same goes for Messi or Cristiano the other way round. Different eras might favor different personality traits or talents. All we know is how much certain players stood out amongst their peers. It's fun comparing them but in the end, it's never a clean comparison because the contexts of their respective performances vary so heavily.

So it's fun discussing whether Pelé was better than Cristiano, Maradona better than Messi or Messi is better than Cristiano but to agree it will always be apple and oranges and the moment you start belittling other great players because you have a favourite, I believe you're doing something wrong and robbing yourself of enjoying some pretty amazing football :) I'm for instance firmly in the Messi camp but I still root for Cristiano to break records - I mean, in the end it's just great to have witnessed stuff that made it into the football history books live, isn't it?

I have absolutely nothing against those players and enjoy watching Ronaldo play as much I enjoy watching Messi play (although the current version of Ronaldo is not as fun to watch).
Overall I do rate Ronaldo higher but that's more based on what I rate in a player because, in terms of impact in the game over their careers, the gap is pretty much non-existent.

I never watched Pele or Maradona so I can't really rate them unless it's based on stats or trophies.

Can only recommend watching footage of both players. I haven't seen the recent Maradona documentary but the Pelé one was great. Maradona has some extremely impressive compilations on YouTube though. Pelé, too, logically but the quality is sometimes a bit off. For people interested in the cultural impact and leadership etc. the documentaries are obviously even more interesting. Really incredible players and when you've watched a bit of them you'll get why they are still held in such high regards.

You get these pathetic bitter types who have achieved nothing themselves, so have to try and snipe at those who have.

You see it with Mo Farah in running at the moment too.

Some people are just biased and take any opportunity to sht on him and pretty much call him a glorified poacher and on the other side of the spectrum some people overhype him like he is the same player he was when he played in Madrid/Manchester.
The truth is around the middle between those 2 statements. These days he is a player of moments but still world-class in what he does.

Good post.

Did anyone see the repeat of the interview with Piers Morgan last night? First time I've seen it. Wondered how it has been received on here.

He became very emotional on it and was crying about his father. They showed him a video of him that he had never seen before. Showed his vulnerabilities and human side.
Ah will have to check it out. Because of his insane focus and productivity it's easy to forget he had a tricky upbringing and overcame a lot to get where he is.

Imagine the scenes if he scores his next goal in an extra time late winner against Belgium. The Ronaldo fan boys are going to be nauseating. I can see this happening.
