Ok but why do you hate him so much?

He’s a GOAT level player (at least in the discussion regardless of your preference.)

To me Messi is the man baby, to drag your club through the dirt at their lowest point including the fanbase, holding them to ransom. What’s Ronaldo done for you to hate him so much?

Players he plays with have nothing but good things to say, he’s perhaps the most dedicated footballer in the history of the game, is known for being charitable, family man.

Feck me I sound like his PR guy, but I just don’t get why somebody would hate him, especially a United fan.

You’ve reverted to Messi vs Ronaldo, which is the most depressing argument in the history of the internet. Just look at this thread. Bitter Messi fans and obsessive Ronaldo fans. Every one of them trying to belittle the others. You can’t express an opinion without being shoe horned into one of the two camps.

I dislike both of the players, not for their football but for their personalities. I just dislike Ronaldo a little bit more. For me it’s just his whole persona. I couldn’t stand him when he was at United, all his arm flailing and crying, and felt even worse about it after he left. It’s his face, his stupid celebrations, his posing, his self involvement. He’s like a shiver waiting for a spine to travel up. I won’t even go into the more sinister allegations, which remain unproven.

He creeps me out.

Sounds a bit like that dude in school who was always jealous of the good looking guy that got all the attention.

Is it? I know they qualified with 3 points last time around, but this time it feels that 4 points might be the very least that a team might need to make through to the next stage. I might be completely wrong though.
After the Austria win earlier, it's looking even more likely a narrow defeat against France is enough for Portugal to go through

Santos will not change, we will have the useless slow DM double against France
Against Hungary we won because... in the last 15 minutes we didn't have the double slow DM system
It's plainly obvious we are terrible with this system and changing it improves us overnight but Santos is dogmatically attached to his ideas even when he has proven them wrong every single time,

How would you rate the job he did in 2016? Was it luck or just riding Ronaldo and Pepe?

100% my thoughts.

Edit: But I mean... This is how football goes. It's a team's game. The same has happened with Messi too.

2nd edit: good point about tennis' big 3 above. I prefer Djokovic, and there was a time early on where I just couldn't stand Federer go 3 sets on everyone, I felt it was just plain boring, fast forward some years and I just had to concede Federer was magical too in his own classy way, and started watching him closely to just appreciate him before he retires. Same about Nadal.

Djokovic is the GOAT

Yep after Belgium's and Denmark's victory a 1 goal defeat would be enough for Portugal to go through now. A draw between Scots and Croatia though and even a 2 goal defeat would be enough. Those late goals against Hungary which some people were dismissing as stat-padding look really important now.

If Hungary beats Germany by 1 goal, Portugal may still be out if they loss to France (depends on goal difference and goal scored)
If Hungary doesn’t beat Germany, Portugal will go through even losing 2 goals to France.

Had forgotten about the possibility of Hungary winning against Germany. A Hungary win along with a French win knocks Portugal out irrespective of GD as the Germans will finish third on the basis of a better head to head against Portugal.

I am sure it’s not based on head to head? If it is, then how does Denmark stands above Finland and qualify, despite them having exact same points with Finland beating them in first game?

Like the Copa America it's a trash format devalues the tournament. Group stages are pretty much pointless and it all comes down to a handful of games. The CL and WC, apart from being in pretty much every way, and far better in this regard too.

Because they had a three way tie with Russia. In that case, GD of the matches between the three was the deciding factor. If it's just two teams tied on points, H2H decides.

Oh is it so? Because so far all teams on same points are ranked by goal diffference in the table. If that’s the case, Portugal have to draw France in order to qualify, given that Hungary beats Germany.

Don't see Hungary winning that one. Germany should at least get a draw given the confidence gained after their last match

Both.
We defended really well in 2016, in the knockout stages we only conceded 1 goal.

The team in 2016 wasn't as good as the team right now, now we have great players in pretty much all the positions in attack while in 2016 we had Ronaldo, Nani (not in top form theoretically) and old Quaresma (still good but with less magic).
Then in the bench we had Éder (who, right?) , Rafa (meh then and still meh now) and André Gomes (super irregular and not deserving to be called at that moment).

Compare now to our attack currently of Ronaldo, Jota, João Félix, Bernardo Silva, André Silva, Rafa, Bruno Fernandes and Neto (injured and not called).
Basically our current team is better suited for attack, unlike 2016, but Santos still wants only to defend, and especially still wants to use the double DMs in Danilo and Carvalho when that has shown in the last years that it doesn't work at all.
Even our current full backs (Cancelo - covid'd, Semedo, Ricardo Pereira - long injury in the season, Dalot, Guerreiro, Mendes) are offensive ones but still he wants them to defend first, which exposes their weaknesses and ignores their strengths.

So people agree Santos did good in 2016 with what he had but since this new generation appeared he failed to adapt to it and clings to his ideas that don't suit it.

Portugal 2016 wasn't spectucular or anything, but they did just about enough to get into that final, solid enough.

However, that win against France in the final was a fluke, 9/10 times they lose that.

And both of those are being ruined with format changes.

All the best tournaments have been made weaker and devalued. Being able to to advance in third place without winning a game in the group stages is just shocking.

Was it really a fluke though when all they had to do was reveal their secret weapon?

Mate you can't say that on here, god, it was the greatest sporting achievement of all time!

Huh? I don’t know what’s your problem but you have been acting quite weird here lately, even jumping into Ronaldo thread now and making up stuffs which doesn’t exist and without any meaning.

Regarding “greatest sporting achievement”, no one had ever make such claim here, it’s ridiculous anyway so I am not sure what exactly are you trying to achieve making up all these.

Mate you can't say that on here, god, it was the greatest sporting achievement of all time!

It was. No doubt about it.

Ronaldo was on the touchline controlling them all like foozeball players. Even though he was not on the pitch the win was still all because of him.

Ronaldo would never accept a Barcelona offer at this point in his career, I don't think he'd want to tarnish something that took him a whole lof of effort to conquer (a place in real madrid's history).

I would love to see both of them together though, I think they'd complement each other very, very well.

who would take the pens, who would take the free kicks. Would love to see them together in a testimonial, but at the same club would be a recipe for total disaster. One that I don’t think either player would accept.

Messi would accept, he’d be assisting Ronaldo and Ronaldo on pens, Messi on free kicks

Ronaldo takes the pens, Messi takes the freekicks. Best of both worlds.

So avoid a 3 goal defeat and hope Hungary don't win. Think they have just about made it through.

Wouldnt suprise me to see Ronaldo and Messi together in a few years in MLS. That would be the biggest draw possible for MLS. Probably at Beckhams Inter Miami.

I don’t think Ronaldo is going anywhere near America, owing to legal reasons.
