You really need me to join the dots for you? Fecking hell. Google their dates of birth and do the math.

Obviously, every player is different but there's lots of talk about Ronaldo being not quite as effective as before from people who watch a lot of Spanish football (I don't) so its definitely conceivable his best days are behind him. He's so dependent on physical attributes that he's the type of player who might struggle to reinvent his game if/when he loses a yard of pace. I actually though Van Persie would cope better than most.

Its all guess workcbut given their respective injury records i would bet Ronaldo will age much better than Persie.

In all honesty...i dont think Ronaldo will be the same player in 2 years. He might do the Cantona and retire at the peak.

My point is I don't get why a player would want to join Madrid. They are ran like a circus and in terms of trophies they win it is actually been a laughable club if you look at the last decade. A player going to Barca or Bayern (in the last 2 years) I understand because of the success these teams have had. But Real Madrid is really just show and name but literally nothing else ! Ronaldo has made a bad choice going there, could have won way more trophies staying here or joining Barca or Bayern but he went for Real because it is Real and has won 1 league title and 1 CL in all those years. Very poor for a player that can be considered the best or second best (depending on opinion) in the world.

I agree with this, and I'm surprised Real's trophy haul (or lack thereof) since Ronaldo signed for them isn't highlighted more.

And I'm glad as well, the message should be clear - leave United and win less than if you'd stayed.

I feel we've fetishized Ronaldo too much since he left, singing the name of a Real Madrid player is something that never, ever sat right with me. Same with the annual 'coming home' campaign.

I'm really looking forward to the season that the pendulum swings and people no longer pine for his return.

Seeing him now playing under Benitez (Benitez!!!) will be funny. Fergie's arch rival and a manager who pales in comparison to our own manager.

I can't see Benitez pandering to Ronaldo's prima donna demands - should be quite entertaining.

IMO he will do another season at real then go to psg or mls .
Of course ronaldo is a great player (his goal record is phenomenal) but as you say Benitez won't bend over and let him bum him with his pants on like every other coach does .
Ronaldo will break the Madrid scoring record then he will be off into the sunset !

needs about 11 goals to be Madrid's all time leading goalscorer.
Means there's no chance whatsoever he's moving this summer...

With strong USD and low interest rates, Glazers can easily issue a new high yield note, let's say (£100 million) to fund the purchase. Questions is, are we as fans ready to face hike in ticket prices which the Glazers will introduce to offset incremental interest payments. £7 million in incremental interest (assuming 7%) doesn't seem an awful lot.

I don't think they will get into high yield notes for funding a transfer, even of 100 M. High yield notes are not used for such purposes, are they?
Also, In Ronaldo's case, the problem is not just transfer fee but willingness of all parties. Transfers are better as conventional investments imo and we will have money to get into raise money for bidding through conventional route, if he is available.

Yeah, cuz Ronaldo's gonna leave Real Madrid right before he becomes their all-time top scorer.

That's just the kind of thing Ronaldo would do, isn't it?

feck sake, let it go.

I see them letting Bale go before Ronaldo and moving for someone like Reus next year.

I'd have thought there was no possibility when anchelotti was there... With rafa I think our chances have to be greater (though i could see rafa being out by xmas and zidane in charge if they have a bad start)

I've always expected Ronaldo to stay at Real until well into his mid-30s, but the arrival of Benitez does shake things up somewhat.

I still think there's no chance he'll move this season, but if Rafa lasts the season then perhaps Ronaldo will be desperate to make a move the following summer, particularly if Rafa makes Perez's little pet Bale the main man in Madrid. I wouldn't rule-out the PSG move happening that summer, particularly after the comments from UEFA on FFP being "relaxed" :o

I don't think he has any choice. Ronaldo is more powerful at Madrid than Benitez will be.

Selling Ronnie now would be good business for Madrid, depreciation on him the upcoming years in terms of value will be enormous. Wouldn't be surprised if he'd leave.

Hear what you're saying - point I was trying to make was that it would take a some personality change for Benitez to avoid friction with Ronaldo & this may backfire on Benitez, making his tenure fractious & short.

He's 30, despite his form his value will drop as he ages... If they sold him, they could probably make a profit on the 80m with PSG and City ..It will happen soon

I'd take him back in an instant but as a striker
Has he not always said he does not want to operate through the middle because he thinks he gets more spance / opportunities coming in from the wing?
Personally I'd love to see him back with us (at the right price) and sort out the rest of the team / formation around him.
I wonder how Rafa would intend to use him at Real - he has always been fairly defensive in his set ups so perhaps the freedom he has enjoyed would disappear (though perhaps he is too important to the team and Rafa will be told just keep him happy)

If you take his extra yard of pace away, I think he would still be a monster. One of the best headers in the game, with an insane leap. Perfectly two footed with a great shooting technique, there are not three players around who have a better goalscoring instincts, his timing in front of the goal will always be immaculate. He's very strong, has good height and his first touch, dribbling and timing would still be as good as it gets.

I remember reading some scientific article on the mystery of Robben, his trademark move is to always cut inside to his left foot. They studied why players couldn't stop Robben from doing that, and it turned out that him cutting inside simply goes too fast. Apparently he can cut inside so fast that it literally happens before you can notice it with your eyes. Within milliseconds he goes to his left, so even if a defender knows what Robben's going to do, it's physically impossible to act on it before it has happened already. Robben's raw pace hasn't got much to do with his ability to cut inside (think of Walcott who has the same pace but not the same dribbling/cutting inside ability Robben has) and if Robben would lose some pace, he'd still be able to cut inside like discribed, so fast that no one could stop it.

Same would apply to Ronaldo, even without the extra pace he would still cut to his right and shoot before people know what happened. You imagine him finally changing his game to become more of a classic striker. He doesn't prefer to play with his back to the goal, and he doesn't need to as long as he's got pace, but he could change it up without problems if his body forces him I think. There wouldn't be many strikers out there who'd have the same amount of quality as an older Cristiano would have, I really don't see why losing some pace would be a problem for him. Chronic injuries or permanent damage would be a much bigger concern for me, with the ammount of kicks he gets and the way he has pushed his body to the limit for years.

But for me there's no way he won't be one of the best players in the world for the next four years if he stays fit, so if we could somehow manage to bring him in it would be brilliant.

Even if he is 30 now, he's a one of a kind physically speaking. Can see him still being world class for the next 4 years for sure. All this talk about getting bale because he's younger is bollocks really, because Ronaldo at 34 will still probably be better then bale at 29, and in those years the difference would be big. Basically over the 4-5 years, Ronaldo would definitely score about 100 goals more then bale. He'll inevitably decline, but I can see him lasting a lot longer at the top level then most players simply because of how he's always taken care of himself.

I think it would be PSG if he left. Maybe, just maybe, Bayern?

Don't think he goes backwards.

He would be if he went to France. The Premier league is qhere its at now if Spain isn't where you want to be. Its the most watched league on the planet and the huge increase in income is going to make it even bigger.

...but I can see him lasting a lot longer at the top level then most players simply because of how he's always taken care of himself.

Agree 100% with this.
We need a goal scorer and Ronaldo can definitely do a job for us, for the next few years.

He scored 5 goals in 1 game, earlier this year. By comparison, Falcao (who was seen as our striker, No.9), scored 4 in the whole season!
So, Ronaldo's goal scoring ability vs Falcao's is put nicely into context.
If Ronaldo was playing for us this year, with his 20+ goals, we could've been challenging for the league. Instead, we ended the season scoring 3 goals in 6 games, which is something you expect for a relgation candidate, not a league title contender.

IMO, we need a goal scorer, more than we need defenders and midfielders.

They are not selling Ronaldo, nobody would be stupid enough to sell a guy who has just scored 61 goals
Are we talking about the same people who sacked one of the management greats after two seasons, where he won four trophies including the domestic and european cup double, the tenth in their history, the tenth they've been chasing for many many years and by all accounts was well loved and backed by the players?

Unsure they do seem fairly stupid;)

And remember:
The probability that a given person is stupid is independent of any other characteristic possessed by that person

30 is not a bad age like some people are suggesting. He can play another 2/3 years with similar output.

With all due respect, can anybody realistically see Ronaldo leaving his dream club because of Rafa's seemingly imminent arrival?

There are a lot of rumours that Perez prefers Bale to Ronaldo (younger, "his" buy, less of a power in the dressing room/press, not a Mendez client) and that this season has made them think that one of them has to go - for money reasons, for football reasons.

Ronaldo may well be ready to leave. But so may Bale. I think it will depend on whether someone stumps up enough cash for either of them.

feck Ronaldo. Hes not leaving Real and good luck to him. No matter how good he is he disrespected the club when he wanted out. Do people not remember the Sepp Blatter slavery incident. Get fecked Ronaldo, score as many goals as you want in that two horse race league.

you mean the one AM won last season?

I would absolutely love to have Ronaldo back in Manchester, however he is getting old so I wouldn't be happy if this was done for a huge fee. I'd rather that money be spent on someone younger or on a position we need more e.g. a defensive midfielder, defender or a right back. Also I don't think it is very likely this will ever happen.
