Is there really any doubt that we'd snap the hands off Madrid if there was a chance Ronaldo would come back? He's not only 1 or 2 of the best players in the world, he's also the most marketable name in football. He'd make you your money back whatever the fee. He isn't Di Maria or Robben or Reus. Those are great players. He's Cristiano Ronaldo. He'll be 40 and still be packing the club shop or going on a tour of South America and selling it out within 3 minutes. He's a game changer for anyone on and off the pitch. A guy capable of destroying teams and giving your business guarenteed revenue. There is no gamble with a player like him.

He's not leaving, it's just the usual rumour which usually happens at this time of year when silly season beckons. He's probably angling for a new deal at Real.

Soooo is this a serious thread then? I assumed it was a joke.

why do we care about resale value? we never get resale value anyway from the majority of players we sell. do Madrid care about resale value? we need to stop this bargain bin transfer mentality. even if we were to sign Ronaldo, there would still be plenty of money left to buy elsewhere.

Because there isn't unlimited money. 70 mill plus silly wages could be better spent now on players who will either give 10 years service or will stay a shorter time and potentially generate huge transfer fees (Depay for e.g.) which can be spent on new players. Look at RVP. He cost 25 mill and is now nearly worthless in the transfer market.

I shall keep my thoughts on a Ronaldo return to myself for another few years.

If he was ever going to come back, this would be the right 'time'. He has to give into age in terms of being a winger soon, and playing him as a 10 would be so much better than anything we have.

Personally the heart wants it but the head says that the squad needs other holes fixed more, and that he has to start waning soon.

I wonder if it really matters in terms of we've got funds to get whoever we actually need but could easily get Ronaldo as well if we really wanted.

Luckily Utd aren't Tottenham and don't base their transfer decisions on how much of a fee we can get for them.

------Cavani---Muller
Ronaldo----------------Bale
----Gundogan--Bernard

A whole new front 6! Thanks, Metro!

If its out of paying £60mil for a 30yo Ronaldo or £80+mil for Bale, give me Ronaldo every single time.
Ronaldo will still probably be banging in the goals at 35, AFTER Bales pace has probably gone and he's rendered useless.

What a silly comparison. It isn't long ago that we wouldn't have even considered signing RVP when we did and even then we only did so because SAF wanted a big last season. We don't need to avoid big fees but we do need to buy long term quality players nearer to the beginning of their careers than the end.

When was it? Utd have regularly signed players around that age. We need to buy players that will improve our team. What better way to build than from a position of strength? Having Ronaldo would give us that.

I'd sign him. We need goals from out wide in this team and he's a safe bet to do that for us. It would also raise the profile of our club even more and help us attracting and retaining (De Gea) players.

I don't see him moving in the summer. He's been doing this "I might leave" seemingly every summer since 2011 and I wish this club would come out and shoot down reports and stop being used by Ronaldo and his team as a bargaining tool.

It as a kneejerk response worthy of City or Chelsea. Ronaldo will only decline from here so it would be a ridiculous purchase at anywhere near that price.

I think he's lost some pace already. Just watching bits of the Juve game and he wasn't his usual lightning self when Madrid were countering.

Why would Real take Di Maria back after selling him just last season? He clearly had issues there and I doubt he'd want to go back in any case.

He never wanted to leave, nor did they want him to leave, like with Makélélé, they didn't beleieve he was as valuable the top earners to offer a large contract to.

Could just be the end of a long stretch without a break. He played the World Cup while injured and they won the CL last year (and fought La Liga down to the end), so a pretty intense 20 months since September 2013. Seems like he went over 4K minutes both years, which is a lot of minutes.

It should be easier to see how many minutes a player has played. We really need something like Basketball Reference.

I thought the opposite, grant it he didn't sprint much in the game but the two parts I remember was 1. The ball was going out over the rightsided line in a counter attack and he took off like a rocket and kept it in. 2. He ran from his on 18 yard over lapping Benzema when he fake shotted and crossed instead of shooting.

However I don't think pace is Ronaldo's problem in the latter years, most his goals come from inch perfect positioning within the box and you can't teach that. Look at RVN for example, Ronaldo at 40 will probably be faster than RVN ever was, he was like a deadly turtle.

I can't see Ronaldo ever losing the pace big time like everyone seems to suggest. He's a fantastic athlete who looks after himself better than pretty much anyone. Sure, he won't be as quick as he was, but he'll still be faster than the vast majority of players.

He already is losing pace which is why he is playing in the middle more than before. It seems insane to spend anywhere near the sums being talked about for a 30 year old.

I seen him sprint the other night vs Juventus and he was rapid. If we sign him his commercial value will help offset the cost although how much I'm not sure. Plus his value on the pitch is monsterous.

How much would people have paid for a 30 year old Giggs I wonder.

Exactly. Giggs had a great career and great longevity, but Ronaldo for me would have to be the better player.
yeah i know but the point I was making is no one would have envisaged Giggs turning into a central midfielder and playing till he was 40....Some are like 30? He's too old and he's finished. Ronaldo has enough ability to be good for a good many years yet. He can adapt his game. He's not one dimensional.

That's all true.

He's 16 goals off being Real's all time top goalscorer, so there's zero chance he'll leave this summer. (currently tied for 2nd on 307 with Di Stefano)

Looking at the stats, he's done it in way less than half the games it took Raul! Incredible.
