Cristiano Ronaldo (I stay)

It's fascinating how absolved of blame one can get over an action he himself initiated.

He signed the contract for a team who'd been in the gutter for 8 years - even spending three or four of those years in Europa League.

Has he no telly or internet? A blind mountaineer in Pakistan would know by now, how shit we are. Ronaldo would've known too - we'd just lost the EL final ffs.

If he really wanted to win the PL he should've and could've gone to City - everybody could see, that that was where the title would end up - especially with him in the team. He chose the bigger paycheck - which is fair, but don't come here and talk about US costing him the PL. He chose money over it.
I agree with everything you said up till the last point. He didn’t come because of money as he took a pretty big paycut to come here anyway. Sir Alex, Rio and Evra definitely played a big part in his decision to come back.

We absolutely can for the timing of this alone.
This is the problem for me. If he wants to go then fine. If he said at the end of the season he was off then it would be fine. Hell, he would've probably got a standing ovation at Old Trafford if it was announced before our last home game.

But after silence in June, to come out when we've already allocated our transfer funds on x,y,z he now says "oh yeah, you need a striker now as well IoloIol" is taking the utter piss. There's no way he just decided in the last few days that he wanted to go, our fate was sealed before the end of the season that we wouldn't have Champions League football next year.

I feel slightly embarrassed that I wanted him to be our next captain now :wenger:

Other than that, not sad to see him leave - it was fun while it lasted.

Let’s also not forget things like this

Premier League trophies from 19 years old to 37 year old would have cemented his place ahead of Messi. These are the things that make him tick.

Whether it makes you laugh or not.
So you're rooting for Ronaldo than for the club you supposedly support? I really hope the answer is no.

Defended Ronaldo a lot this season, and he's been one of the few players that actually turned up. But this is shocking on his behalf. I don't blame him for wanting to leave but he should've asked 1-2months ago.

Like 2009 all over again, sod off.

I think this time around its a little cheap but 2009 was fair and agreed upon. If anything that's what he should have done this time. Been upfront that I am leaving if no champions league.

We basically cost Ronaldo a Premier League win at 37 by not letting him join City last season.

Can't criticise him at all for wanting to move on now to try and get a trophy.
No, he helped us by not letting Liverpool win another PL. Ronaldo and City isn't winning the PL.

Yeah he's a prick. He's only wanting out now because he's got some options lined up.
More than had a chance to say he wanted out at the end of the season, fair enough.

To do it now and undermine the team as they start pre season is incredibly selfish and cnutish

Nah, I mean of the available clubs, no one could/would match our nearly £500k a week offer. I think that filled in 85-95% of his decision making. The remaining percents was probably down to Fergie. I'm a cynic, I know, but by now I really don't care too much about him or his future.

Pretty sure we were pressing from the front in 2008. Unless you think Rooney, Tevez etc also had pressing stats the same as Ronaldo?
Pressing from the front isn't about one or two players but rather the whole unit. Even Ryan Giggs pressed high in isolation in the 90s. But we're talking about pressing high in a compact high block with the current head coach. So everyone attacks and everyone defends, hence the counter press is then more effective when attempting to play the game in the opponent's half.

His teammates purposefully derailed the season because, if they got CL football, Ronaldo would've likely stayed.
:D

I reckon Mendes decided to wait until Nunez was signed with Liverpool so that United couldn’t use Ronaldo wanting out as leverage to get him to join us instead. He reps them both.

But that's not what pressing stats for individual players tells you. The stat doesn't tell you if the press was well coordinated as a unit. It doesn't tell you if that player pressed at the right time or in a smart way.

All it does is tell you how many times that individual closed down an opposing player in order to win the ball back. Nothing more.

The stat has the same meaning now as it did in 2008.

And I bet you Ronaldo was way below his teammates back then just as he is now.

That 2nd place finish a year back still divides fans even now

I hope he either leaves within the next week (to a foreign club) or just sucks it up for another season and plays his part in the rebuild for a club he supposedly 'loves'. I think he's 15 goals ahead of Messi in the Champions League history so i doubt Messi will be catching him anytime next season.

Not saying I did. But the guys with the retrospective glasses on need to give it a rest.
What guys on twitter or YouTube say, sure - there's probably many who deliriously thought it would be that easy to win the league as to sign a 37-year old Ronaldo, an injury prone Varane and a Sancho who'd never played in the league.

But a man like Ronaldo, with so many people of knowledge at his disposal, shouldn't have gone to United under the presumption, that he'd win the league within two years. That was ludicrous to every individual who'd seen us play. He should've gone out of either love or money or both of the two - maybe with a faint hope of any trophy - but the league? feck me.

Coming here now and complain about lack of ambition is like watching 50 people buying the same ice cream and all spitting it out immediately as it hits their tongue, but you still walk up there and buy that same ice cream. At that point, you are just as much to blame as the fecker handing out the garbage. .

meh, it is what it is. He's made his standpoint clear, and I actually think him leaving might be a positive for ten Hag when it comes to implementing his style and system. Still don't see a lot of realistic options for Ronaldo out there, but either way, I just hope it's resolved quickly.

The stat is backing up what I saw with my eyes. We have a player who is reported to have refused to press according to reports and it was easy to decipher that whilst watching the games.

And if a player in the forward line refuses to apply pressure off the ball, then it will effect the whole unit. There also won't be a effective counter press or even setting traps for the opponent. And if you fail to that in the game today, then you have failed to control the game off the ball, and playing the game in the opponent's half without the ball becomes problematic.

This thread gets stranger and stranger.

He’s not at training for personal reasons which the club have accepted.

He’s still also under contract to United so we won’t be selling him (yes selling him) to Chelsea or a PL rival. We have never done that and never will.

If he moves it will be with our blessing and outside of the PL. Simple.
What? We’ve sold countless players to other PL sides. Arsenal were a “rival” when we sold them Welbeck.

It's actually quite exciting thinking that he might leave.

I remember when we signed him last year scoffing at reading about Juve fans been glad he'd gone, and us laughing when they struggled without him, but I get it now.

If we'd finished 3rd he wouldn't be leaving. Champions League football atleast.

We finished 6th. I don't blame him at his age.

hes Protective of his goals records Vs Messi.Ok. But there’s a way to conduct yourself towards the club that gave you so much. You can blame him for being a prick…

Probably around 3rd if i'm being honest. What's that got to do with the comment you made

I thought it would be third too. I'd imagine Ronaldo thought it would be 3rd at worst. So now he's realised he doesn't have the time to hang around. What's to be upset with the player for. We are where we are, and it's better to rebuild anyway.

Signing him was more about him not signing for City and that was mission accomplished for the club who actually then left space for City to sign Haaland instead which is way worse for us.

Bad move all round.

So you're rooting for Ronaldo than for the club you supposedly support? I really hope the answer is no.

Ronaldo is more of our club than any fan. He gave all he had in his youth and at his age now. Fans need to move on and point fingers elsewhere.

Sorry, 2008 until SAF convinced him for one more season

Was absolutely beaming when he came back and this comeback debut was fantastic.
But the longer the season went the clearer it became that he isn't the one we need.
He works too little and demands too much.

Does Ronaldo leaving mean Maguire is nailed on as Captain for another season?
I mean it was probably not going to happen anyway but CR7 was the only hope that the armband would go elsewhere.

Same applied back in 2008 with us and when he was winning with Madrid. The rules of successful football haven't suddenly changed.

Why do you think Rooney and Tevez(and others) worked so hard?

If back then pressing wasn't all that important why were they not lazy off the ball like Ronaldo? Why instead were they all running their arses off to compensate for him?

His work off the ball has always been poor and it was as important to compensate for it back then as it is now.

Football hasn't changed to the degree where off the ball laziness has gone from irrelevant in 2008 to now critical.

I also don't get this idea he refused to press. He's 37. He might have refused but its hardly down to laziness now. He's just not superman. If you press like a 24 year old at his age he'll have nothing left for you on the ball.

Every club and every manager in the world knows before they sign Ronaldo in his late thirties you won't be getting a guy grafting hard off the ball.

It's not a case of him refusing. It's just not physically possible.
