Cristiano Ronaldo (I stay)

20 mins against Liverpool is a long time not to press or run. His sub against S'hampton was another no show.
I don't hate the guy, but I dislike players not trying. If you get 20 mins of game time then you work your ass of for those 20 mins.
You try being honest. You've been impressed with his will to fight for United?
Last year I absolutely was. 100%. He was at times the only one who looked like he was trying. This year I’m going to wait until I comment, he obviously wanted out so lets see, if he’s here after the window closes and doesn’t look like he’s fully in it then I’ll agree with you and we should just drop him for good in that case. But lets see.

Ronaldo is a lot of things...but he isn't useless!

There is a place for him in the team and a way to play to his strengths...just not as an automatic starter!

Which he currently isn't! and ETH has already shown in his short time at the club that he is the boss and not afraid to drop Ronaldo.

Let's see, I agree. Maybe he's half-arsing it because he wanted the move and when he doesn't he'll buckle down and give us our money's worth.

Most?

Again, whether Fergie, Rio, or the Queen of England wanted him back is irrelevant. The only reason he is back is because of an idiotic decision by Woodward.

And again, what you and I talk about on a forum has very little real world effect.

Woodward was long out of transfer responsibility by then wasn't he?

How is it not in our interest? The guy was our top scorer. We have no reliable scorer other than him in the squad. If we signed a striker this year, I absolutely agree with you- he isn’t the future. But with the squad being what it is, it is absolutely in our best interest to have a fit and motivated Ronaldo get us 25-30 goals.
His general play is average and he can't press. We don't need to sacrifice our system and the development of our playstyle so he stat pads/be served and we stagnate. Note that this discussion is about extending his contract by a year. Next summer we will sign a proper starting number 9 at which we can't be paying Ronaldo his monster wages. This year should he stay, well just have to get by with Martial (in form and fit he'd be my first choice) and Ronaldo (I'd play him more against teams that park the bus).

Ronaldo is not ruining anything. You have admitted on this forum that you are a messi fan, so just keep spouting nonsense about Ronaldo here. He is a ManUtd player. You should be rooting for him.

As for the Messi stuff I’ll leave that out of here, hate that debate. We’re lucky to have seen both of them play at once in our lifetimes.

You're the one who brought it in here. As he pointed out, most people think Messi is simply better than your idol. That doesn't mean the majority of the people on the planet Messi fans.

As far as Ronaldo goes, it's in our best interest of he decides to show an iota of effort. Statistically dead last in the European top leagues in pressing and offered nothing in build up play.

You keep harping on goals. He had 27 goals and assists combined, well short of the top attackers in the league such as Salah who had 46.

The pressing stuff is again just not a great argument, you asked for his pressing numbers compared to lewa, benzo etc in another thread and I gave them to you, there is no real difference. And the second part, I agree. Next year we move on, but this year we absolutely need him. You take out 25 goals from this team and I can guarantee you we won’t make top 6 let alone top 4.

You don't take away 25 goals from the team by taking out Ronaldo. It's not like we'd be playing with 10 men

You do realize that United scored more without him when the entire attack wasn't forced to play through a static forward who couldn't be bothered to run.

Yeah - but if you ignore that, and you let him finish from all possible positions and angles, and you don't worry too much about how the team as such is doing...he's still remarkably good. At least for a player his age.

Plus - elite mentality.

In retrospect, a pretty bold move to skip pre-season training at 37
No I don't think so.

To see how instrumental he was in this signing (i.e. it was only really him orchestrating it) - Ed Woodward's role in Cristiano Ronaldo's Manchester United transfer | Football | Metro News

Also, from The Athletic:

The conversations between United and Juventus were straightforward, with Woodward and Juventus chairman Andrea Agnelli co-conspirators in the European Super League project only a handful of months earlier.

Woodward spoke to Mendes on his mobile phone from the back garden of his neighbour Gary Lineker. Former England international Lineker told the BBC: “He signed Cristiano Ronaldo when he was in my garden! When he walked in he was on the phone to Jorge Mendes (Ronaldo’s agent) — I hope I’m not giving too much away! I have a fantastic picture of him sat on the phone to him which I might share one day with his permission.”

This is still a very hard concept to grasp for most people  Or they just assume that Ronaldo's replacement striker would score 0 goals a season

Thanks for this.

Ronaldo is nowhere near as mobile as Benzema. Night and day. It's a great argument. You just seem unable to comprehend it. Its why serious teams tend not to start 38 year olds these days.

Sure, continue moving the goal posts. You said PRESSING, and I told you their numbers aren’t too different. Mobility is different. I can comprehend plenty, but you seem to not want to because again you’ve confessed your love for Messi in another thread, think it was along the lines of “he’s the greatest player I’ve seen in my life” or something, so yeah not bothered with you anymore

I can at least admit the fact that he is my fav player, unlike 90% of you who just shit on Ronaldo because you like the other guy (who I actually don’t dislike).

You’re going to compare his stats in last year’s united team to salah’s in liverpool? Gimme a break.

Oh no, he offered nothing in the buildup play. But his goals got us through the CL group stages.

This is so basic that I refuse to believe that anyone with a working brain doesn't grasp it.

The fact that it's being used as an actual argument in these discussions has to be some kind of piss-take.

He was cheered and his name sang at the games so far this season

People can bitch and bitch and moan and bitch

But ultimately if he stays and scores goals, he’ll stay popular with the match going reds

This is very true, although I don’t think there’s any suggestion from most that he wouldn’t be cheered and adored.
Think there’s healthy skepticism on whether his inclusion on the pitch is helpful or harmful in the overall to the rest of the team and the way EtH wants to play

Why is it that so many yanks are such rabid Ronaldo fanboys?

Is it because they don't understand football? Or are they just drawn to narcissistic pricks (see Trump)?

There is no comparison. Salah statistically destroyed him. And United went from 2nd to 6th in large part because your idol offered literally nothing in build up.

Where were his goals in the Knockout stage when it mattered against Atlético? Rather forget about goals. What exactly did he offer against them in 2 legs? Exactly, nothing.

Why? He’s arguably the greatest player ever to play for the club and one of the best to play the game generally… why would it make you cringe that fans sing his name?
Because he doesn't deserve it. This rat has no loyalty to anyone but himself. He was entitled enough to separate himself from the club with the belief that he could secure a move to any club of his choice practically. Yet fans lap up all of his nonsense and are only too happy to chant Viva Ronaldo as he paces down the touchline. He was always a preening peacock, but he justified the fuss. No longer.

Still better than Messi and two years older hahahahaha

You're still bringing in the 7 time balon d'or winner in a Ronaldo thread after you said you'd stop?

Let it go. All the tears in the world aren't going to give your hero a 6th or 7th Balón d'or, or a 5th or 6th Golden boot

I root for Manchester United. It's not in our interest to have on our books a 38 year old who is one of the best paid footballers in the world. Absurd levels or stupidity to do that.

I'm not really a Messi fan. But like many people think he's better than Ronaldo. You don't need to hold a view either way to know that we shouldn't pay a fortune in wages to Ronaldo for another year.

Absurd is the opinion of shipping out the only person who can reliably play upfront. I'm the biggest Ronaldo fan there is and I was fine with him leaving if we could get anyone to play upfront. Newsflash, we have no one. Getting rid of Ronaldo to just prove some point is not good for the club whatsoever.

Yet you're the one posting in every Ronaldo thread since the past few months. It's like your existence on this forum is based on being insecure about Messi and rushing into Ronaldo threads. Just chill out and order some Uber eats my friend.
