I think Pakistan's mercurial quality is overplayed. I think it's inherent to any team that has a good bowling and a poor batting.
With a good batting lineup and an ordinary bowling lineup, you're more likely to see draws(because of the runs on the board) and wins(when the bowling does well).
When that is switched, as it is for Pakistan, you're highly oscillating between losses and victories.

Philander's career bowling average (17.23) is fecking ridiculous. Gem of a bowler.
SA have been penalised for ball tampering. Disgusting, I think the fair think to do is abandon this match or award Pakistan the win

Not dissimilar to when McGrath and Gillespie were at their peak. This South Africa side under performs hugely, I think. With the quality they have, they should be far and away the best test side there has been since that great Australian team.

Talented they obviously are, but its batsman with bats the size of tree trunks facing bowlers who have been robbed of the chance to create reverse swing or turn playing on flat pitches with fielding restrictions that mean for the most part clearing the infield is a boundary.
We're getting huge scores because any semblance of conflict between bat and ball has gone.
I was unaware of the new rules tbh. I feel the rules looks like they were meant to have a T20 sort of effect on ODI, since this was the format whose significance is really suffering from the T20 extravagance. We will have to see how the ODIs turn out with these rules in other pitches. Speed bowlers will do good, spinners and medium pacers will have to take a bit of hiding, don't they?
Speed bowlers will NOT do good. They will only do well in the initial overs - then everybody will get slaughtered - no matter how good they are.
Spinners have been rendered almost useless by this change. Add the reduced number of fielders outside the circle and clearing the infield = easy boundary as long as the shot is decently placed.

As awesome as Kohli is and possibly the closest anyone can potentially come to emulate Sachin's success, do any of you agree that game has become totally batsman oriented now, especially in ODIs and add to that the bowling quality going down considerably in most countries, Cricket has ceased to be a good and fair competition between bat and ball?

No batting combination even if we combine all time greats, could have chased down that total in world cup final vs. that Aussie attack. Also some people saying Kohli is already better than Sachin. The squad for SA test will be more interesting from bowling point of view. Expect pitches be as flat as Sonal Kapoor for WI series.
Agree to all that. Saying we would have won in 03 with Kohli is not really logical, 359 back then wasn't the same as today. The only chance we had was with Sachin specially in the form that he was, and Joburg is quite a batsman friendly venue as well, but Aussies had a good enough attack to restrict us.
Kohli being better than Sachin already? That's just knee-jerk.
ICC needs to make some changes otherwise it will just become a 50 over version of 20-20.
