You come back with pretty diagrams which I also like but van Gaal himself said 4-3-3 is his system.

http://jeddavies.co.uk/wp-content/uploads/2014/04/Louis-Van-Gaal-interview.pdf

a second striker capable of 20 goals a season... that sounds more rooney to me

as you can see... HIS 4-3-3 if you look at his diagrams can actually involve two strikers with one striker in the litmanan / Berkampt and possibly rooney in the future role?

(P.D.S) - What characteristics do you want that your team shows in the field?
(L. van Gaal) -
I want 8 lines... 8 lines... so many as possible... because then the occupation of the pitch it's better… so we are blue...
the best occupation of the pitch is this system... 1,2,3,4,5,6,7... and with this dynamic one line more (Figure)... but
depends where is the ball... when the ball is here he has to go here... so also form a line to pass, but when you play that
system you have always triangles… you have always two options for here... here... two options…also more... it's the
same here... two options... in the middle it's always more... here it's also a triangle... a triangle... so that’s why 4-3-3, in
my opinion, is the best system and you can play with a defensively player or an offensive player (triangle of midfield)
it’s dependable of the quality of your players.
When you play a 4-4-2 a lot of teams are doing that, then you have not so
much lines... you see... and it’s easy to defend … therefore I played... when I have two good strikers in a window, so
then I have six lines,
1,2,3,4,5,6 (He doesn’t count the GR) and dynamically more… "

Just read those scenarios, they are so unrealistic

How about the game is played on the moon?

Or better, If United lose not just do liverpool win the title but they die on the way back home...

I can't remember how this all started but I'm pretty sure it was actually a realistic scenario, in fact, probably something to do with you watching the United team this season hoping for them to lose.
The point was they were exaggerated. But United playing Chelsea knowing a win would gift Liverpool the title is not so unrealistic. And you would want a meaningless United win and Liverpool lifting the title.

But it makes no difference whether Liverpool or Chelsea win the title as long as it's not United, right @Empire?

I'm not quite sure what you don't understand, I don't care about other teams, I want United and only United to be the champions. I don't want Chelsea to be champions nor Liverpool, you might be a Chelsea fan but I'm not.

I want United to always act in a way that benefits them therefore even when they haven't won the title they should do everything they can to get it back next season. On the last day of the season I would sooner they play youngsters who go out and smash the opposition thus giving them confidence after their summer break in pre-season and making them that much more excited for the season wanting to experience more success than suffer a demoralising defeat making their pre-season no where near as effective and making them nervous for the season ahead.

I want our players to do well, you don't. That's the reality. Spin it however you want but that's the reality.

A Januzaj hattrick would do nicely on the last game of the season, maybe even a top top performance from Cleverley.

If you want Chelsea to win the title and United to lose then that's your opinion man. If you care more about Liverpool than our own team doing the absolute best they can then that's cool, keep calling yourself a fan if you want, but you know the truth. ;)

Too bloody soon.. We've become one of the the "quick-fix" clubs who doesn't give the new man a fair chance..

Wow, you reply quick.

Meaningless? I would want them to play the youngsters and the youngsters do very well. I want them to go into their summer full of confidence, as opposed to demoralised.

United should now be preparing for next years championship. That's what matters.

No games are meaningless

You probably think pre-season games are a waste of time lol

You probably think the league cup games are meaningless too, it has nothing to do with confidence for the youngsters.

We must now be getting ready for next season and be determined to win the title back, not obsessed with Liverpool or Chelsea or City. This is the pre-pre-season.

I heard the news just as I drove up to the coroners court and have had to contain my excitement while sitting through an inquest. Now home and am gonna catch up with what people think. Incidentally, the last time United had a player/manager in charge, my Great Uncle Tom played for them! That was in the 1920's!

Markets only really react negatively or positively to financial news. Any big player investment should see a slight fall in the price in the short term, whereas sponsorship deals should see a rise.

Come on, Barney is right. How can you say what Manchester United usually does? This is the first time in a generation we have been in this situation, there is no precedent to say what United "usually" does one way or the other.

You've had one manager in that time!

Before Fergie we had Atkinson for 5 years, Sexton for 4, Tommy Doc for 5. You have to go back to the very early 1970s when someone was sacked without having a very significant period of time in change. If that's not unusual, then what is?

I was just about to post this myself. Plus as it's in the US there's less of an attachment to football anyway which lessens the chances of psychological trading as there might have been had it been on the LSE.

I didn't realise Hyypia got sacked from Bayer a few weeks ago and now just have an interim manager. Would they be interested in Moyes? Would Moyes be interested in going there?

I know he was linked with Schalke when he was at Everton.

It's unusual compared to today, sure.

He was being respectful as most coaches are when they talk about sackings

Yeah, I'm aware. I still think it's a comment that makes no sense when he's more than I key basing his statement off of a sample size of 2.

I don't think he'll be hired by another big club. He'll have to rebuild his reputation at another club before he moves to a club with champions league ambitions.

Yeah, I'm aware. I still think it's a comment that makes no sense when he's more than I key basing his statement off of a sample size of 2.

That's kind of what 'unusual' means.

Something that doesn't happen often. The same size of 2 vs the 'usual' of much more than that. If it happened often, it wouldn't be unusual. You see how that works?

Leverkusen isn't a big club, they are the definition of bottlers, the German Spurs.

I hope that Moyes continues his career outside of England (it will be better for him) but I doubt that good clubs outside of England will be interested for him. Personally, I think that Newcastle represents his best chance.

He's bound to be a potential stop-gap manager for the time being, IMO. May even spend some time away from the scene as clubs may be scared to approach him so soon after this failure, citing his negative tactics and fearing potential fan outrage. I can see him being a "save us from relegation" type to come in, a caretaker if you will. Though I suppose he could find a home for a few years and build up a club. A championship side might work for the immediate future. However, his track record at Everton might entertain some management/owners in top flight leagues.

Alex Ferguson has always been about value in the market. Louis van Gaal will be no different. Therefore this doesn't suggest anything, he called PSG mad for spending £30m on Lucas Moura. I think he learned his lesson from Anderson.

Ferguson's top targets were not available at the cost he wanted, he wasn't willing to blow his finances on paying more than he felt they were worth. Now I'm not saying they didn't refuse him funds but I am saying Ferguson was very value conscience. Therefore until Ferguson comes out and says the Glazers didn't back him (thus contradicting everything he has said up until now, even in interviews such as with Charlie Rose where he didn't need to praise the glazers but did anyway) then we will never know.

I cannot see him spending £40m on Hazard when he could have spent £14m on Kagawa. Especially with his plan to play Kagawa as a number 10 at the time.

You can't force coaches on him and you can't force advisors on him. If he wanted to work with his own team then you must give him absolute freedom however if his methods don't work then you find somebody who will get the job done. This is happening, there are no excuses and a top level manager should not need babysitting.

Steve Jobs would say to his senior employee (vice president level) that if the garbage in his office is not being emptied regularly for some reason, he would ask the janitor what the problem is. The janitor could reasonably respond by saying, "Well, the lock on the door was changed, and I couldn't get a key."

It's an irritation for Jobs, but it's an understandable excuse for why the janitor couldn't do his job. As a janitor, he's allowed to have excuses.

"When you're the janitor, reasons matter," Jobs tells newly minted VPs.

"Somewhere between the janitor and the CEO, reasons stop mattering," says Jobs, adding, that Rubicon is "crossed when you become a VP."

I like how the board afforded David Moyes absolute freedom to operate however upon failure he could have no excuses. The objectives were there however he failed and next season evidently they were not confident enough in him getting the job done.

You are right in part, in the sense the board must bear responsibility for all that happens. Their experiment failed here, however, I have no problem with them taking calculated risks and experimenting in order to better the club. They will recover from this therefore what they did was fine, they thought Moyes could get top four with that squad and if he did, he would make it his own over time and grow as a manager becoming very competitive.

None of us are sure how Fergusons financial part was handled but the usual route is manager and scouting team identify targets and the board sanction the funding. Perhaps Ferguson had complete control over this and advised at what price to pull the plug but Ferguson was a renowned delegator and in some cases it was over a few million or agent fees. Either way we have failed to compete in the market and find ourselves in a position of weakened bargaining.

Your right in some sense that you can't force a manager to use advisors and coaches but when that manager is literally coming in to an elite club from mid table then there should really have been better succession planning. A time under which Moyes came in to the club and learned alongside advisors and coaches how best to steer the ship, ideally 6-12 months under the legend himself. We all know of the unique situation we found ourselves in and it was poor from all concerned.

This board have proven time after time to be penny pinchers, back when United was limited we always invested in the very best players (making your opening sentence nonsense) and this plc has been reaping the rewards ever since. Mind blowing that our transfer record was Berbatov right up until we got mugged for Fellaini.
Van Nisterooy,Rooney,Veron,Ferdinand all the highest fees in the land and it was a regular occurrence under the very same Ferguson who touted value at us much later under new owners. Each season we strengthened from a position of strength only Berbatov and perhaps Anderson have commanded such extravagant fees under the current board. We now find ourselves strengthening from a weakened position and will be playing catchup as our rivals continue to strengthen themselves, add bedding in another new manager and it all points to a cock up. The board have made a massive error in long term judgement and it's back biting them on the arse or rather where it hurts them most, right on the wallet.

Nozzy what the hell are you doing here ?

Sorry had to do it. Welcome up man. :)

But I have to digress with your opinion on Mata. The problem is you're comparing him to the wrong set of players. Cantona, Yorke, Sherringham, Rooney - were all strikers first and foremost. They may be creative and may have played in the hole - but No. 10s they aint. A number 10's value can't be judged by stats, goals or even in terms of assists. Look at 2 of the greatest No. 10s of the last 20 years. Neither Laudrup nor Zidane had a massive number of goals. They didn't have huge assist stats. They didn't have exceptional workrate. But what they did have was the ability to influence play. And Mata, though nowhere as good as either offers the same qualities. Look up Chelsea's matches since he joined them. He will not jump out initially but look close enough and you'll find that most of their attacking play went through them. He's definitely not a luxury player and when he's used in the right system he can be a game-changer with his clever build play and incisive close range passing. Problem is cerebral players like him often get ignored for more hollywood rah-rah guys. It's a travesty that Scholes was so misunderstood by most fans in his time. Only the opposition knew he was the heart beat of United's play. Mata though playing in a more attacking role is more similar in that he may not score a ton of goals and may not even assist much but under further examination you'll see how important he's to the build up of play. Infact faux No. 10s like Rooney are rarely used nowadays because they are not as creative as specialist No. 10s and play too close to the No. 9, disrupting both him and the goal-scoring wide players. If we want to play a progressive style, Mata is perfectly suited to the No. 10 role in our team. What we have to decide upon is the choice for No. 9 - it's a toss up between RVP and Rooney.

BTW as other have pointed out your Mata's stats from Wiki are incorrect. Here are the real ones (ESPN) :

2012/ 2013 Season for Chelsea :

Games : 55
Goals : 20
Assists : 28

2011/ 2012 Season for Chelsea :

Games : 47
Goals : 12
Assists : 20

Those are exceptional stats for a No. 10 when you compare him to his contemporaries like Ozil and Silva. But like both of them he suffers when the overall quality around him is lacking. He's primarily a facilitator and people often fail to take that into consideration. We all saw how devastating he was used in the proper system with Hazard and Oscar at Chelsea last season. Another thing you'll notice is the sheer number of games he's played without getting injured. He has an exceptional fitness record and you can always rely on him to be 100 % at crucial times during the season. He has a bright future at the club.

PS : Modmin sorry for OT. First and last time. :)

Cheers invictus - seems I've stirred an off topic, hornets nest on Mr Mata.;)

The stats quoted were league games only Chelsea 82 / 18 over three seasons.

I see his gifts I REALLY DO. I also see the sheer athleticism of the modern EPL and for this reason, see Mata as becoming a luxury we'll disgard, in favour of more traditional Man United, pace, blood & guts. Gary Neville might not be everyone's football guru but I think he had a point when the Mata move was in the air - "they need someone" - was Mata so crucial, at £37m? That aside, Neville pointed out last night, how United play - not the 18 yard box tippy-tappy of Barca, we, play with power & pace, right through the side. It's simple, it's exhilarating, it's long been the United way.

Why would we try & emulate Barca, when they've been found out. Why do we consider we can recruit equivalent players to Barca, to make their style work? Do such players exist & could we get them? Unless you've got exceptional players, you can't use this system. All I've said is that Mata, has one position, in a United shirt, the one you eloquently outline. Put him on the left or right of a front three and we risk the counter attack (as befell Kagawa at Goodison, where he couldn't live with Coleman).

I love a cerebral player, I go back to Best who could see a pass but also had innumerable other qualities. I recall Cantona extolling the beauty of the assist but we know he made a host of other contributions also.

If it's to be Van Gaal, he'll go with RVP I would think. Maybe three behind but with Mata always in the centre and i don't write off Rooney as being one of the wider of the three. Rooney & Reus either side of Mata, I'd take & start baking the humble pie now, in the hope it works out.

;)

 at you thinking you're more of a fan when you see Chelsea and Liverpool winning the league as the same thing, as long as it's not United.

I'll throw this one open to the floor, how many of you would want us to beat Chelsea on the final day of the season in a scenario where that would give Liverpool the title and not improve our standing in the league?

Managers were given more time back in the 70s and 80s (generally). Hiring and sacking has become a much more frequent thing.

You've had an anomaly of a manager.

It's not really that much worse than starting Giggs in CM which SAF did many times.

But after being out for months on end - throwing a player like Nani, into a fixture like that? At least Giggs would always put in a shift ?

You don't see any link then between the words 'anomaly' and 'unusual'?

I'll take the loss. F*ck Liverpool.

Has there been any updates about the coaching staff? Who's staying and who's going?

Round and Lumsden gone.

Nev and Woods staying till the end of season atleast.
