Confirmed: Moyes sacked.

Really hope we go for Carlo. He's surprisingly 54 (yes, 54) and he's a frigging 4 times CL winner (2 player, 2 manager)! Please lose all games until the end of the season so Real Madrid sack you and you come to us!!!

well if van gaal can last 2 years then pep is out of contract at bayern... van gaal to introduce more of a total football style and then pep to refine it (and bring messi) ok it probably wont happen

but if klopp does not want to move and if simeone is happy at athletico then who else is available (blanc under contract, jose under contract) perhaps van gaal is simply the best out there at the moment?

Yeah, agree with this. Seems like a decent choice.

Love Klopps loyalty, we should definitely force him to sign for us.

The Guardian reports that Jurgen Klopp seems have hammered a nail into the coffin of reports linking him to United, saying: "My commitment to Borussia Dortmund and the people is not breakable."saying: "My commitment to Borussia Dortmund and the people is not breakable."

I want him even more now.

Top bloke. Van Gaal to steady the ship until 2018, and Klopp to take over once he honours his contract at Dortmund? He also said;

"Man Utd is a great club and I feel very familiar with their wonderful fans."

in the same statement.

4 times includes his playing days, by that logic lets get Paulo Maldini.

He'd be a good choice if available though.

I don't want van Gaal to be honest. So I'm not really sure. Hopefully the club has a plan in place though.

I hope it too (about a contingency plan in case some candidates are not available). People have been tipping about Frank de Boer, so my guess is that he may not be so out of place if his name suddenly comes up considering how many ex-United boys work alongside him now.

Zero experience as coach! Pls quote in full
Oh FFS he has been coaching for a wee while now. You do understand the difference between the manager and coaches
Zero experience as coach! Pls quote in full
2 years coaching experience of the reserve team is more than zero experience and you do know the difference between being manager and being one of the coaching staff running training drills dont you?.

jesus h christ....

If the request is from sir Alex, I think he will eventually! :) Meanwhile Giggs will become assistant to the main man. What is even better is to bring back Rene and Phelan who have been commanding respect from players

The bolded point kind of sums up what your saying without all the rest, reports are now suggesting we were ready to sack him as early as February (after the Olympiakos debacle) which would fall in exact alignment as to when patience finally ran out for anyone who's watched the game for any length of time.

Some reports even suggested he offered his resignation after Liverpool, these are merely reports though but would be interesting if so. I doubt it is, reports also suggested we had already approached Klopp and van Gaal however Sky Sports just said United said they are yet to approach anybody about the job.

These are just reports, but the one you are talking about, what I read suggested he was ready to offer his resignation after that bad run however the board gave him a little more time.

They wanted him to succeed and they gave him every possible chance.

It seems we've been playing the waiting game and that this clause of top four or CL football exists on some level. If we have indeed waited until now it might prove to be a gigantic cock up short term and actually see us lose out financially than had we cut our losses when it was clear he was out of his depth.

Woodward was talking about lucrative friendlies or something. They seem to have a financial plan to limit the effect of no champions league football.

They obviously explored their options and took the risk they deemed most appropriate.

Taking a point or 3 off Liverpool would also have had a massive impact had we had a management team in place that knew what Manchester United was all about, Phelan would still jump at the chance, even Queiroz could have been brought back with Giggs as interim. Gigantic mess that could/should have been avoided or at least lanced before the wound became to large.

You are basing your entire post on reports patience ran out in February yet the board continued to let him manage because they did not want to pay severance. The same reports suggested he offered to resign at some point (thus severely reduced severance) but they let him tough it out. After the return leg against Olympiakos, they probably just thought it's worth the gamble just incase he finishes strongly because of how much they wanted him to succeed.

Anybody can look back and say in hindsight something was wrong. Only they know the risk they took and I'm sure the board are good at risk assessment therefore they probably did the right thing.

I really wanted it to work out for Moyes, stood by him as much as I could but I think it became clear the players simply weren't going to buy into his plans and the sacking became inevitable then.

despite what many think he's clearly a very capable manager but he's said a lot of weak things in the press and I wonder if he were to have his time again whether he'd be a bit more aggressive in his approach to the job. I feel he started the season off giving the players far too much respect and they've responded with laziness and arrogance. You look at his players at Everton and he's never had to handle a really big ego before, I think this has been his downfall. SAF said many times that the manager has to be the most powerful figure at a football club, Moyes never gave off any air of authority in his time here. Which is strange given he had a reputation for being no-nonsense.

wish him every success in his next post

What? How does that make any sense at all? I don't remember Maldini winning it 2 times as a manager.

And Carlo is proven in all divisions for all teams he has managed. Not to mention Chelsea, which proves he can do it here. And after being at Madrid, you'd imagine he could handle the pressure.

In an odd way I kind of hope Klopp sticks to his word. He's a breath of fresh air for football.

Are United the only prem team to have never had an overseas manager? Anyway, Klopp or Simeone for me, I can't think of anyone else. I can't see those two leaving though, so who is left realistically?

I'm at work and can't fecking concentrate. Too happy, and I just have to read everything about this.

Best day since we won the league last year.

Hardly.

I feel very sorry for the man - but why, in God's name, could he not see the mistakes he was making, even when the world and his wife were pointing them out. Three No. 10s, no wide play, Kagawa rarely used where he shines - the list is endless.

And injuries aside, it's ridiculous that he never put the the same team out twice.

And thus the merry-go-round of sacking and hiring managers begins.

I am glad he's gone but I'm terrified of the future.

Fantastic news at last. After a season defined by dithering and indecision and dismal performance those in charge have moved decisively and I am OVER THE MOON that Moyes is gone. The club was imploding and there can surely be no legitimate qualms about his removal. I struggle to understand sympathy for him. He has fallen short in every possible sense and damaged this club no end in the process and I shudder to think what would have happened if he had been allowed to remain for the start of a rebuild. Thankfully we remain robust enough as a club to roll with this and I hope that lessons are learned primarily that there is no room for complacency. Thats whats handicapped us here - the idea that SAF could summararily appoint a likeness as his successor and all would continue to be paradise in the garden. I congratulate those involved in having the guts to get this done and that includes the players who have contributed too.

I'm sure he will do well at a club at his level but his shot at the big time is now over - at least he is several million quid richer to assuage the hurt.

Seeya Dave and best of luck Ryan (and Nicky) for the remainder of the season.

Well we knew Moyes was going to be the manager a long time before he was officially appointed so I'm just going to say Van Gaal.

Does that matter to you.

I feel for Moyes. I feel for the club. I feel for SAF. I'm just so relieved it's over.

Moyes never asked for this job, you don't say no to Sir Alex, especially if you're a dour Scot.

It should never have happened in the first place. We need a proven winner or someone who has clearly shown signs of a great footballing philosophy and improving teams ten fold (Martinez, Simeone, Rodgers pre-LFC come to mind). Moyes was never any of that.

Here's hoping we get the right man and the right signings in and out this summer and start from scratch next season.

Like if said he'd be a good choice if available, but as a manager, he has won 2 CLs, like Mourinho and Guardiola, no need to exaggerate his managerial achievements.

You have to respect that.

Still, I'm thinking: "Fecking why??"

Sets a precedent for players who sign a new contract and think that they can just break it to move elsewhere. I think Klopp likes to lead by example, and I really respect him for that. Also, don't forget that Dortmund are a huge club, 90k passionate fans watching attractive attacking football every week. Difficult to give that up, even for a team like United.

Don't worry. It can't get worse than what we've seen this season. It will never be this bad again.

I somehow get the impression, Dave asking the Glazers for massive funs this summer for a rebuild, didn't help him on the decision to oust him prior the summer.

TIMELINE OF MOYES'S TENURE AT OLD TRAFFORD
September 1 - United suffer first defeat under Moyes as Daniel Sturridge gives Liverpool victory at Anfield. Wayne Rooney misses the game with a nasty head wound after being kicked in the head accidentally by Phil Jones in training.
September 22 - Hammered 4-1 at Manchester City. This time Robin van Persie is absent with a thigh injury.
September 28 - United lose 2-1 at home to West Brom, ending the Baggies' 35-year wait for an Old Trafford triumph.
October 19 - Concede last-minute Adam Lallana equaliser against Southampton at Old Trafford.
December 4 - Bryan Oviedo scores four minutes from time as Moyes' former club Everton end their 21-year wait for an away win over United.
December 6 - Rio Ferdinand criticises Moyes' policy of leaving it late to pick his teams, claiming on BT Sport: "It turns you into a madman."
December 7 - Yohan Cabaye gets the only goal as Newcastle win at Old Trafford for the first time since 1972.
December 10 - Van Persie suffers thigh injury taking a corner against Shakhtar Donetsk, and is ruled out for seven weeks.
January 1 - Rooney plays in the defeat by Tottenham but is then ruled out for four weeks with a groin injury.
January 5 - Swansea win at Old Trafford for the first time as Wilfried Bony's late goal sends United out of the FA Cup at the third-round stage for only the second time in 30 years.
January 7 - Defeat in Capital One Cup semi-final first leg at Sunderland means a third straight loss for the first time since May 2001.
January 19 - Skipper Nemanja Vidic is sent off as United crash to defeat at Chelsea.
January 22 - United beat Sunderland 2-1 in the Capital One Cup semi-final return leg thanks to Javier Hernandez's last-gasp effort in extra-time but come off worst in an awful penalty shoot-out, with only Darren Fletcher scoring from their five kicks.
February 1 - Stoke end their long wait for a win against United. Charlie Adam's double gives them their first since 1984.
February 7 - Vidic confirms he will leave at the end of the season.
February 9 - United come from behind to lead bottom side Fulham at Old Trafford, but Darren Bent's stoppage-time equaliser settles a 2-2 draw to deny the hosts all three points. Moyes describes the result as being "as bad as it gets".
February 25 - It proves gruesome in Greece for United in the Champions League last 16 as a poor performance sees the Red Devils beaten 2-0 by Olympiacos in Piraeus.
March 16 - Another day United will want to forget in a hurry as two Steven Gerrard penalties and a Luis Suarez strike earns Liverpool a crushing 3-0 win at Old Trafford. It could have been even worse for Moyes' men as Gerrard also hit the post with another penalty.
March 25 - United lose 3-0 to bitter rivals for the second consecutive home league game as a brace from Edin Dzeko and a late strike from Yaya Toure hands Manchester City a derby double over their city rivals. The result ensured United were guaranteed to end the season with their lowest points total in Premier League history.
April 9 - Despite an encouraging 1-1 draw in the first leg and taking the lead through Patrice Evra, the Red Devils go down 3-1 to defending champions Bayern Munich in the second leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Allianz Arena.
April 20 - Moyes' return to Goodison Park is turned into a nightmare as a Leighton Baines penalty and a goal from Kevin Mirallas hand Everton a 2-0 win, a result which means United cannot qualify for the Champions League.
April 22 - Moyes is sacked by United.

From the daily mail, i can't believe there are still people who think he should be given another season.

Am I a bad person for being in a happy mood this morning over this news?

I know I shouldn't celebrate someone losing his job really but atm this just feels too good, too liberating.

Nah.

He lost his job and got compo for it.

Course not. Every five minutes I remind myself that he's gone and do a Tim Henman style fist clench

Don't get this hysterical reaction.

Chelsea chop and change every season, they've never fallen to the embarrassing level we have this season. We have the finance, the players, the structure to continue to be successful. Why do people think a competent manager can't come in and fix things.
Why do people think firing the worse performing manager this season by a country mile constitutes as "chopping and changing".

I really really really don't what more Moyes could have done to justify his sacking. It's the most appropriate and understandable sacking in the history of the PL.

What is Fergie's stance in all this? I hope he does not leave because of what has happened.
If he does, that's incredibly petty. Sacking Moyes is in the best interests of the club and those interests are more important than that of SAF's.

this was a big fear of mine and one of the reasons I backed Moyes to the end, despite feeling he'd ballsed it up in the end. I know its part of the modern game but I don't want to turn into one of these clubs who hires a new manager every time they lose 2 games.

you also wonder just how powerful our players are feeling right now, if they don't like the next guy are they gonna hound him out too? just keep putting in half assed displays until someone they like gets the job
