Yes, he's very good. I will agree that he coasts a lot in songs and sometimes sings (he is a mediocre singer by the way), but his top level is up there. The subject matter is repetitive but who's isn't out here? Honestly, the majority of rappers find a lane and stick to it. Jeezy and snow, Common and liberation, yada yada...
I think his followers and fans cover a wider spectrum. When he drops a project or song it gets attention from all facets. Including hiphop heads that otherwise stick to a less 'sugary' version of music (jacking your metaphor). Says more about his ability to reach further than the quality of his music. The same way Biggie Smalls had mass appeal, and critical acclaim (not putting those two in the same sphere technically, just making a comparison).
I wouldn't call it a real battle as in the days of old, but going beyond Common's inability to find any weak point that would resonate on a verse with the public, Drake's diss was very, very well constructed.
Piggybacking on dxadel's post, he did have the underground acclaim before he blew up. Going pound for pound with the likes of Elzhi and Phonte, running with Bun B, the respect was there. His releases since he blew up may have declined in quality, but one can't take the pre "So Far Gone" period away from him.
