College Football & NFL thread 2007/8

There are some good RBs coming out in this year's draft. McFadden, his college mate Jones, Smith from Central Florida, Stewart at Oregon, Charles at Texas, and many more. Someone will end up getting a future all-pro in the 2nd or 3rd rd - that's how deep this draft is at RB.

I think Jerry is going to package his two 1st rd picks to move near the top 5 and get McFadden. Personally, I'd rather he hold both picks and get someone like Jones or Smith at #20 then draft a DB at #30 or thereabouts. Hamlin had a decent season but there's no way he's a pro bowl FS. I would like to see Henry moved to FS and draft a top CB.

Yeah if you look at the Broncos over the past ten years they rarely draft a back high, since there are so many risks. Running backs have the shortest NFL careers as well because of all the punishment. It is certainly a position that can be filled through free agency quite easily, this opposed to getting a good DL men or left tackle which are usually best acquired through high draft picks. Even look at the draft two years ago, I bet the Texans are quite happy that they went with Williams as opposed to Bush

I still think it's too early to judge that decision. I believe you have to give a draft 4-5 years before grading it.

I'd be willing to swap one of my 1st rd picks to NO plus a future conditional pick for Bush. Imagine him and Barber with all those other offensive weapons. But I don't see NO giving up on him so soon.

True, there is no New Orleans are gonna trade him though

Can't believe Seattle just folded after taking a 14-0 lead.

NE on the drive late in the 2nd half looking to take the lead. Tied at 14, 2:00 warning.

Not surprised, funny thing is one quarterback has gone into Green Bay and won in the playoffs.

Hint: He kills dogs

Pats now 17-0...

Was a great game. JAX were great tbh, NE are special though no doubt about it, Indy must be looking at there secondary after the game Garrard had, oh did I mention Peyter's favorite receiver of all time is BACK. And even if SD beat Indy, they have as good a chance against NE as anybody, as they have by far the best RB the league, give AP a couple years and he might be there althogh he does seem to be injury prone which is a kiss of death

JAX should be proud of their performance. New England are just fantastic.

I believe Favre had like 5 ints in that game vs Atlanta. I remember watching that game at some bar in Fort Worth. We were shocked the "mighty" Packers were losing at home in January.

The NE/Jax game... I knew it was over when Northcutt shanked that pass at the 1... should have caught that but I think he was scared of Samuel about to hit him... appeared he was looking towards Samuel instead of focusing on making the catch. He catches the ball and Jax scores from the 1 on the next series, it's 21 all. Doesn't mean Jax goes on to win but it would have made those last few minutes a bit more nervy. I also thought Brady was gifted a roughing the passer call on the next series that eventually gave NE an 11 point lead and all but wrapped up the win. I highly doubt Garrard gets that call if a NE player hits him a second after the pass. Worse yet was the Jax player touched Brady but was trying to grab him but Brady fell then immediately looked for a flag. That was horseshit but the superstar QBs often get the marginal calls or the phantom calls.

The refs just stole a legendary touchdown from the Chargers. I really hope Colts lose.

The TV companies want an Indy/NE championship game so in all probability that is what they will get. After all, they are the reason dominant offensive teams like the Pats and Indy exist - would Brady and Manning have such sexy numbers if they`d been around in the 70s and 80s when defensive backs were actually allowed to breathe on receivers? Would they feck. Neither is in Elway or Marino`s league. Fact.

The officiating has been a complete disgrace, I've never seen anything like it.

bingo , but excuse me as someone older than you - those two you mention at the end couldn't hold Johnny U's jockstrap! and records today in the touch football league they play mean sweet f&*k all.

Mike Carlson says Otto Graham was even better than Unitas. True?

SD will still be quite tough

Not if LT is out. Blowout. NE will score at least 35 no matter who plays for the Chargers. SD cannot keep up offensively.

The Cowboys are disappointing me. They are the most undisciplined unit in the league. Have been for years. Penalties are killing them today. If they pull this one out it will be by luck or NYG secondary injuries. Green Bay is going to manhandle today's winner.

great result for my packers. The giants game is gonna be a great at lambeau. I expect favre and co to come out on top though. My condolensces on your loss Marcello (I know your a huge cowboys fan). You think the cowboys roster will stay the same for next year but it will have signficant change? Also, anyone catch the post game conference with TO. He was crying in defence of Romo and Phillips. Don't know what to say about that really. Tears seemed genuine enough.

I shouldn't but  at the Cowgirls. I guess NE is a lock for the bowl now. Lets hope Favre has one last great hurrah left in him

he was a great leader. like a roy keane. graham (never saw him play) was in a championship game very season he played. he didn't win em all but he took his team to the "big game" every year. but unitnas was awesome in a more "modern" league.

one of the best players ever , maybe the best was sammy baugh. played in the 40's with the boston/washington redskins. led the league in passing , interceptions and punting one season.

don hutson had (i think) 17 TD receptions for the packers when no one threw the ball. and everyone goes on about rice and moss. it's like the players in the past didn't exist!

the game we watch today doesn't really resemble the game 50 -60 yrs ago. the NFL was a nothing league , not propped up by TV and the giant contracts. like football in those days guys had second jobs to make ends meet. and played both sides of the ball.

art donovan (baltimore colts) was asked once if he ever had a ACL injury , "nah we didn't have those in my day".

and as a new york football giant fan the green bay match up is perfect. those two battled it out in the early 60's damn near every yr. w/ GB winning it each time. maybe luck will be w/ the jints this time.

long time no see, where you been DE?

Been busy with work mate. Between work, friends and all the live sports on TV haven't had much time on the net. Hows thing with you? Hope your packers go all the way. NE are cnuts, Chargers are going to be ass-raped. Giants and Eli won't survive the snow though in my opinion. The packers have that game against Seattle to acclimatize them and I doubt they will be gifting NY 2 touchdowns in the first quarter.

still waiting for NE to get beaten. Fcuk!

SD will be severe underdogs in this game specially if LT and Rivers are hurt.
That might actually work to SDs advantage - or maybe I'm just grasping at straws

Marcello is probably quite pissed off today....

Ten years ago, yes. Today MUFC is bigger to me than Dallas. That's saying something being a born-and-bred Texan. It didn't surprise me that Dallas choked - it's common. What bothers me is these "experts" look validated in picking NYG. Dallas gave that game on a silver platter, that's what pisses me off more than an actual loss. It's not like NYG dominated or stopped Dallas. Dallas has no discipline and blew it.

Didn't you just have that weird feeling all game, Dallas could never really establish any control, Romo was right on when he said it was akin to Denver loss to Jacksonville in 1996, you should've seen me that day:mad:
That drop by Crayton was huge, he could have gone 50 more yards downfield, but hey what can you do.

Your Emmitt Smith, as all-time best back pick is making more sense now:p

Things are going well right now. Busy with work and I started school again a week ago so that's a bitch but what can you do. NE is gonna demolish SD. Hopefully the pack can do it against the giants, I think they will, but will be tough game. However the packers do, I think this will be favre's last season :(.

GB would be a better matchup against NE. Yeah people will point out how NYG had the lead on NE but puh-lease. The Giants had more to play for despite NE wanting the perfect record. NE sleepwalked that game before deciding to actually play. NYG went all out and still lost. I believe NYG's pass rush/blitz could cause Brady some problems but with Eli on the other side there is no way NYG could keep up with NE in the Super Bowl. Favre is a better big game QB as proven so I would entrust him to keep it closer and not wilt under the pressure of such a big game. Eli hasn't done anything to convince me he has turned the corner. A few good games, even in the playoffs, does not make me suddenly feel he could handle the Super Bowl against a vastly superior team. I see a similar result to SB XXXV if NYG make it there. Total mismatch. GB would probably lose by two scores as well, but they have the secondary to physically contest NE receivers. NYG's secondary is banged up and patchwork at the moment. They'd be torn to shreds with NE's offensive playcalling. NE's OL is more adapt at picking up the blitz and pass protecting than Dallas (not that Dallas' OL is bad by any means, just not as good).

i would love to see pats against pacs
the pacs will lose, but i think they'll give a better fight than the giants

Stats back up that claim full-stop. Records pretty much end most arguments.

He has the best numbers, but I lost a lot of respect for him playing out his career like that just to get the numbers. Records don't end this argument you could ask any commentator who the best running back is, less than 5% would say Emmitt Smith

http://espn.go.com/nfl/question/week8.html

I don't see Emmitt's name in there. Also didn't Romo throw more TDs this year than Aikman ever did, well then I guess he must be better than Troy:rolleyes:

Weren't you using a single season stat to claim Davis was better than Emmitt? Sorry but single season stats don't define career best. Emmitt had the most yards and tds by a RB. Broke Payton's hallowed record. First to win 3 straight rushing titles since the merger. 1993 NFL MVP. Won 3 Super Bowls to boot (one MVP award). Awards, records, stats, and longevity speak volumes. Keep clutching those straws though. I could care less what a commentator thinks who is the best at a position - they all have their opinion and many are biased. Emmitt is easily a top 5 of all-time. The haters will leave him out for obvious reasons.

Playing out his career to get numbers? He was 33 when he broke the record (Payton played 190 career games, Smith set the record in game 193 - that's playing too long to pad his stats  ). Emmitt set the record in his 13th season, same number of years Payton played. He owned the td record at age 31. Allen played forever to pad his stats. Emmitt played a year or two longer than he should have but he obviously still had the legs to be a starting back. No one whines about OJ playing an extra year or two with nothing left in the tank.

Romo better than Aikman based on 16 games... that's a laugh. You started the single season claim thing. If Romo plays 10 years, sets team/league records, and wins a couple championships I'll claim him better than Aikman.

The silver lining I can get from the Boys debacle yesterday is at least they won't be humiliated by NE in the Super Bowl. Yes, I'd rather lose in a playoff game than to get to the championship and get blown out. Losing a championship game hurts worse than not getting there, IMO. No one remembers the teams that fail to reach the title game, but everyone remembers the winner and the loser of the title game.
