I would bet that some, if not all of the American owners are probably Republican or support the GOP, who are pretty much lowlife trash and culpable for different reasons. There are just varying degrees of evil attributable to most owners.
There are, and inevitably you have to draw a moral line somewhere. I don't think state ownership is an unreasonable place, objectively, is it?

Them having a controlling stake in the club clearly enables them to operate the club in the way that is beneficial to that end which they wouldn't be able to do with a sponsorship or a non-controlling investment.

Like I said, I refuse to accept that you are incapable of seeing that distinction even if you disagree with it. There is an inescapable tipping point where the club is being run for the benefit of a state, this isn't a difficult concept to grasp.

Qatar need a very different type of help than the kind Ukraine does. They have a much closer relationship than the US and Qatar https://www.lemonde.fr/en/m-le-mag/...s-of-advantageous-friendship_6004912_117.html
Ok I think I understand your point now. Taking state money is fine and ok but if they control the club then its wrong.

I tried reading that article buts its behind a paywall. I posted extracts on google trying to find a version I could read but was unable to do so. So I will give my opinion without being fully grasped on the facts. I think Qatar will heavily depend on US support over France if it came under any conflict. I don't think anyone looks at these old European forces as any sort of major support if they came under conflict. Its the USA...maybe China or bust. France are useless as military force if my understanding of the Libyan conflict is correct. And I might very well be wrong

I don't think I even believe in the concept of sports washing anymore. If anything it heightens the attention on these regimes

You might as well not believe in PR or commercials because you don’t think it affects you. The fact is, millions of businesses use it because their experience is that it works. And all the dictatorships that are eager to spend money on sports, military parades and other PR stuff, also believe that it works. And they have more experience than you in judging it’s returns to, I’d venture.

staff member (woke elite) upset at me saying woke elite...just can't make it up

With all due respect to Moses I don't think he qualifies as part of any elite.

Stop throwing silly labels around, especially when incorrectly used. It does nothing to advance your cause/point and if anything the reverse.

I guess not. This year, we had the World Cup in a region where women are subjugated and same-sex relationships outlawed. In 2026, the World Cup will be held in a country where black people are regularly used as target practice for rednecks and dirty cops and where they elected the most unfit, corrupt and disgusting President in their history.

Will they use the World Cup to regulate gun control? Feck, no! You can take whatever moral high ground you want, but it's basically no different.

Taking state money isn't "fine", nobody ahs said that and it falls back on the "absolute" fallacy again.

Being the plaything of a capitalist parasite like the Glazers is bad and decreases the enjoyment I get from supporting the club. Taking state money is awful and decreases the enjoyment I get from supporting the club even further. Being owned by said state would make it impossible for me ethically to continue to support the club.

None of those are "fine", they're just progressively worse.

I couldnt care less who the owners are ultimately. I only care how the club's run, how we play and not necessarily even based on silverware.

But if you want to take the potential Qatari ownership a step further, aren't we all enabling them by buying the gas that made them rich to start with? With the customers for their gas then they wouldn't be able to do all the deeds and the need to sportswash, to begin with. Its like the US always re-directing and going after the drug suppliers rather than also looking at the demand problem.

Google says Qatari royal family has a net worth of 335 billion.

How many Mbappes does that get us ? :wenger:

There are two differences here. Firstly, I don't want the US government to own Man Utd either.

Secondly, the Qatari, UAE and Saudi mission to use football to further their political aims is an incredibly pernicious and deliberate act that must be fought. There are no countries with a clean history and ethically you'd end up bouncing the world cup around the Scandinavian countries if that was the major concern. However, the Qatari/UAE/Saudi aims with football shouldn't be ignored and brushed away as the same as every other countries issues, not only do those countries have those issues too, but they have actively wrought a campaign to use football to further them. I didn't watch the World Cup this year for that reason.

This is the "you participate in society fallacy". It ignores that fact that your football team being the best is a far less pressing and essential need than being able to drive to your job. We live in a society dependent on fossil fuels and outside of trying to elect governments to change that there's not much freedom for the individual to do otherwise without completely ostracising themselves from society. Man Utd being good is a far less necessary requirement and one the fan base has some small level of control over (although not nearly as much as we'd like).

FA are 100% going to feck this up any way they can for us just like they did the first time round.

The old, “you put petrol in your car, so you’re complicit” argument. A cracker.

I understand that line of thought.

Fair play to you mate I'm just sick of the Glazers and getting slapped around by oil money city

Thats ok, you dont have to believe in it. It's a thing. People like sports, and most will abandon their principles if push comes to shove. Thats why so many were able to make jokes about NFL players wives being more prone to concussions than their husbands. Anywhere else, domestic abuse would be enough to get you cancelled. In the NFL it barely registered as an issue. The City group has been sports washing all over the world, and its worked a treat. Just look at the press, all they ever talk about is how amazing city are. Giving constant praise to the club and its owners. How many glory hunters the world over have City picked up over the recent years? Quite a few million would be my guess. With United it would be worse. We already have that built in audience, and with the club under their control they could do whatever they want. And if they want to get past any credible accusations all they have to do is pull the "islamaphobia" card and shut down any conversations. Kinda exactly like what happened with the World Cup.

Some say that football won in the end, but what really happened is that workers in Qatar lost. Human rights lost. And self respect was lost. Because at the end of the day, a game of football was more important to millions of people than the treatment of human beings. Corruption was ignored. Slavery was ignored. And LGBT abuses were ignored. Is that really who we want to be? The kind of people who turn a blind eye even when it's being thrown in our faces? Or is this just who we actually are? feck everyone else, as long as Im alright, Jack? Well, maybe it is. But it's not me. At least, Im trying not to let it be me. I might not fight every fight, but I will fight this one as futile as it will probably be. If we get bought up by Qatar, Im out. I hope Im not the only one, but if I am, so be it. Id rather waste away in the relegation zone than be bought up by these cnuts just so we can beat City or Newcastle or whatever state owned sports washing club is in front of us.

I have found the hill Im going to die on, and it's good enough for me.

Just when you were starting to sound normal as well

Jesus mate know when to just accept defeat, your not going to win this one :wenger:

I don't see how you can just approach this at such a macro level. I must have missed the memo as to what their aims were regarding their use of football for political gain. If you are going to go down that road though, I'm guessing you must have concerns about using products from China etc.?

I really hope Qatar buys us and turns us into a formidable force again. I fear if they don't they will go for Liverpool instead and it will be extremely hard for us to compete against City, Newcastle and a Qatar backed Liverpool.

Anyway, this will be my last post in this thread. I have been warned by one of the woke elite mods that I am rustling too many feathers and I should leave if I know what's best for my user privileges. I am only allowed to reply if quoted. Goodbye and have a good new year everyone

This lad has to be wumming, surely.

Moses, one of the woke elite ffs

I think to avoid all this from spiralling into accusations of hypocrisy, why don't you all settle on the statute of limitation of crimes?
That will at least draw the line on crimes against humanity etc. Accusations of slavery can be thrown at multitudes of governments and their political supporters.
10yrs? 50yrs? 100yrs?

I look forward to this level of voracity when the World Cup moves to North America and children are still getting blown to bits on their way to their English lessons and black men getting shot by trigger happy cops.

Mate my exact reaction. Glad someone has the balls to back me up against the woke elite on this site

Probably going to get banned and thrown in jail for this

Before I go I just want to proudly state IM ENGLISH RULE BRITTANIA

Yes I would like to retract this.

You can't have a joke on this site anymore apparently

The sheer stupidity of reading woke elite this many times has been funny to read  But it'd be great if all the political/moral stuff could go in the middle eastern owners thread, and this one just has speculation type shit. Probably way too difficult to filter the content this way.

For anyone just dropping in to the most recent page: Avram Glazer was pictured in Doha on December 30th, may or may not be linked to the sale. That's it, the latest piece of news. Your welcome.

Thank you for that. I read the last couple of pages and then gave up as I thought it's the usual discussions on the morality of being owned by ME states.

finding all the quotes of people still watching post takeover saying they’ll quit supporting United if bought by the Qataris will be fun.
