Christian Benteke | BBC: Liverpool Agree £32.5m Fee

He's excellent at what he does and would give us an excellent alternative to what we have. That being said, I don't think he'd really fit into our Plan A.

He's much better than your giving him credit for, when in form he isn't JUST a big lump. I agree we should be aiming higher though.

He's decent enough but I don't think he's anywhere near 'united' quality.

Van Gaal's profile of a striker does seem to favour Benteke though. Hold up play, goals and ability to make simple passes to the wingers and attacking midfielders.

Even if that is the type of player he's after then surely there are better options out there like.

Surprised Van Gaal has not moved for him yet as he seems like an ideal striker to fit his philosophy.

He is talented and I have already stated he will be a huge success here, but the only thing that concern me is how we will incorporate him into our team that seems overloaded with midfielders if Schneiderlin arrives with Schweinstiger. Moreover, what will happen to Fellaini as I can't see a duel attacking partnership of Fellaini and Benteke working out. As such, I can't see the move happening and it might be smokescreen for a subsidiary striker that can cover for Rooney.

I think he'd be a great addition. The price however is definitely excessive and makes me question whether we should do the deal. 10 million less and it's a no-brainer.

Van Gaal wants a team that are good on the ball and play it around on the deck. Signing someone who is only really good enough when it comes to heading a ball would be a bad move.

If we go for a striker then Bentekes name shouldn't even be on the list imo. We need a mobile, technically sound, workhorse who can fit into a possession team. Not a big lump.

Jesus, I take it you've never watched benteke, yes he has the heading and power that is part of his game admittadly But that's just a small part of his game. You seem to have missed the times he scores shots from all angles in the box left or right foot, scores shots outside the box, has the ability to run with the ball. Has a quick turn of pace to get past defenders.

I don't get where people get the idea he is just a lump that can't do anything but head the ball. Make no mistake benteke is very technically sound. He's scored 42 goals in 88 games for a pretty relegation threatened villa team.

Liverpool to surely make their move now with the Sterling money?

General feeling is we might, though negotiating the fee may be more difficult with the Sterling cash in the pocket.

I honestly don't know how interested we are, reliable Liverpool Echo journo's have said he was our main target but we didn't want to pay the £32.5 release clause.

Haven't really seen many links or rumours about any alternatives, but I would be amazed if we didn't buy another striker.

Just pay the money and get him. Out of all the strikers available, he's the best out there. Decent if not great finisher, very good hold up play, powerful and excellent in the air. Give him service and he'll score 15-20 goals a season. That will do nicely.

Think one of your local journos (name escapes me but think it's Tony Evans) said last week on Talksport that you'll sign him as soon as Sterling is sold. Is he reliable?

James Pearce of the Echo and Tony Barrett of the Times are the most reliable sources. Pearce reported we were interested but wouldn't pay the release clause, has gone quiet last week or so.

Surely we'd be better taking a punt on Lukaku than £30+ million on Benteke? If LvG is after than kind of striker that is.
Benteke is miles better. Lukaku is actually guilty of what benteke gets accused of. Uncultured, lacking in technique and all round game. He is pace, power with an eye for goal and nothing else.

Benteke is that and adds a good all round game and fine technique to it.

I want him and hope we get him.I think hrhe ithe next bugbig tthas strikersstrihis sort go. kers of ing s

I would be happy with Benteke to be honest, he's Premier League proven and done a good job at Villa. I'd take him for less than £30 million any day.

I'd be happy with Liverpool paying the £32.5m release clause. Going from playing Sterling as a striker to Benteke up front ahead of Firminho/Coutinho/Lallana with Sturridge as a backup seems better for us.

What the feck happened here?

Yes, and I guess that is what is likely to happen now - would be a good signing - you just need to sort your keeper and CBs now

I like Benteke, I think he's got all the tools to be really good for us, fairly quick, strong, great in the air, good hold up play, decent from long range. I reckon the obvious targets for us would be Muller, Kane and Benzema but we've not got a chance with any of them, they all seem happy at their clubs, neither Bayern nor Madrid need the money and Daniel Levy would milk us for absolutely everything, we'd probably end up paying more than we did for di Maria if we go for Kane. The issue with Benteke would be whether or not he'd be happy playing second fiddle because with the signing of Schweinsteiger that further reduces the need for Rooney to end up in midfield and Van Gaal has basically said that Rooney's undroppable, hopefully that stance changes over the course of the season though. Offer Villa £20m and Evans and see what they say although now Liverpool are flush they'll probably just pay the buyout.

Fellaini or Benteke, i would take Benteke every time. He is actually a striker, and a very good one at that.

I'd swear some of the people on here have never seen Benteke play, technically he is extremely sound, two good feet, a beast in the air with pace to boot.

Why is that still not subsiding my forboding?

He's not amazing. But there are feck all world class strikers available lately. Given what's available he'd be a decent get even for a United.

Benteke struggled under Paul Lambert's slower, possession focused style because he lacks movement and versatility to his game.

While I'd take him as a backup because he could be a flat track bully vs lower domestic opposition, Utd need someone to push Rooney as a starting no 9 across the board in all competitions.

£32.5m would be better spent elsewhere on someone that has more versatility and movement to their game and who wouldn't be as crude and one dimensional in Europe or against the elite sides.

That said, Benteke's qualities to bring others in to play, is a key facet to any striker that we have beyond Rooney.

This might sound crazy, but if we get Schneiderlein. I can see LVG trying to convert Fellaini into a target man type forward rather than spend 32m on Benteke.

Fellaini is good in the air, has a decent shot on him and can bring others around him into play. He doesn't have Benteke's pace, movement and won't score as many but LVG got Bastian to change his position successfully, so you never know.

That is the most frightening thing I've read in a long time.

Would he fit in much better than Ballotelli or Lambert though? Your system doesn't seem to favour that kind of striker.

He's got a lot more legs & enthusiasm than the likes of Lambert & Balotelli. He's more than just a target man.
