Chelsea reach agreement to sign Cesc Fábregas

Sadly, I think the message there is more about saving face than reality. Its entirely possible Van Gaal doesn't want Fabregas, just like its entirely possible he didn't want Kroos. However, Andy Mitten says it was Kroos who turned United down and then spin was put out to try and save the club's blushes. This whole Fabregas situation smells too similar for me to believe that its United deciding we don't want Cesc, not Cesc deciding he doesn't want to go to United.
Could be, I can't see Fabregas moving here so any pursuit would be pointless - especially with virtually all Premier League sides interested in him.

Its been leaked by the club that Van Gaal has asked the club not to pursue the player.....i think thats a pretty clear message.

We will not be signing Fabregas. Those hoping we do should get it out their head now.

I don't think we'll sign him, however I don't believe it was the club/LVG who decided they didn't want him.
Just like the Kroos situation, Woody has been leaking things to the press (which are not necessarily true) in order to fulfil his agenda.
The "we're not interested in Fabregas" stance I feel is face saving by the club.

Understand the point mate but i think on Fabregas it is different. The player is definitely available to anyone willing to pay 40m - if we arent involved its because we are choosing not too.

If reports are true and Fabregas is available and we don't want him, then I think that is absolutely ridiculously stupid. It borders on the retarded.

The player might be available from Barcelona, I have no doubt they would accept a £35m bid from us... but I very much doubt Fabregas would fancy playing here without any European football.

Or...the club have leaked this so as not to draw attention to the fact we're talking to him and to try and quell any speculation?

I doubt he'd care that much as long as he's being paid more than he is elsewhere to do less work.

One of Mata, Rooney, or Kagawa will be utilised as van Gaal's playmaker, for that reason I can perhaps understand our lack of interest. Also the fact we had been messed about last summer with Cesc.

Cesc plays deeper though

You think so? I'm all for signing him, I'm just not sure, being out of Europe completely is huge IMO. I've no idea why we didn't push harder last year though, we were Champions, the money was there, but our bids were incredibly retarded.

Barca and Atletico could do a Cesc/Koke swap deal + Barca should pay additional money to Atletico so they can actually afford his wages.

But then Cesc doesn't seem to be a Simeone type of player at all.

I refuse to believe Fabregas is proving hard to shift. He is a quality player and Im sure there are plenty of people whod have him. Its got to be a case of people keeping these deals out of sight, as opposed to nobody actually being interested.

I absolutely refuse to believe Mourinho wants Fabregas. He already has 2 skillfull players in Hazard and Oscar, he can't afford more, his systems just don't allow it, the rest needs to be hard working and defesively strong.

Well at 30mil+, there might be some issues with whether or not some clubs have room for him. Mata could not get games at Chelsea, would Cesc? Arsenal might not want him back after he dumped them for Barca, and that is understandable. City? Do they have the room to give him enough playing time? For us would he just be another player competing with Rooney, Kagawa, Mata, for the same role?

Or is he more of a box to box midfielder? Is he?

He can play deeper than Rooney Kagawa and Mata, don't let his Barca spell fool you. He was one of the best CM in the EPL not so long ago, yes CM and not no10. Although in his last season at Arsenal he did play further forward.

Anyway whether we are in for him or not remains to be seen, however to say he wouldn't fit into our team I think is incorrect.

Could he be Van Gaal's deep lying playmaker?

Doubt Fabregas would want to play for Mourinho, who is the direct antithesis of the style of football Cesc has been playing all throughout his career.

The Guardian has a rumour today that says Jose does not want Cesc and it would seem that no negotiations have taken place yet. If this article is to be believed, and it is just a rumour afterall.

Mourinho did not want Mata and recently critized Hazard for shunning his defensive duty against Atletico Madrid, so it is no suprise that he would not be interested in Fabregas.

Suprised Arsenal are not going for him. They can adopt a 4-2-2-2 with Ozil, Walcott, and Fabregas alternating in the attacking mid and forward roles. Maybe, it because they will have too many numbers 10 and are looking to add pace to their attack. Same with United in regards to having many number 10, so I hope we also remain uninterested in him. If Mourinho is not so imbued in his own football philosophy, Fabregas would be a great addition for his team.

Arsenal lacked pace last year without Walcott and arguably need for width. Signing Fabregas wont help them with that. The money would be better spent on a decent forward.

Watching that clip makes me happy we didn't end up with that dick Mourinho...

To be fair our interim manager and now assistant manager did something much worse than trying to kick a football by Fabregas' head or poking a man in the eye.

I don't think we can accuse Mourinho of not having the morals to be Manchester United manager.

Too right. Mourinho is trouble, pure and simple. The only reason he gets away with it at Chelsea is because (a) they're eternally grateful for him winning them some trophies and (b) they aren't exactly the classiest bunch of guys on the planet anyway.

With the Costa deal all but done, shit would get real here if they pull this one off as well.

Precisely. That is why it is hard to imagine that its either:

1) He has said feck off and we are saving face

2) We're trying to downplay expectations in case it does't happen (again, saving face)

Woody and co, and the club, were truly embarrassed last summer - very publicly. Over the last several season we've consistently been rejected/missed out on primary targets so I think saving face going forward is a good idea!
