Charlie Adam | Set for talks with Liverpool

SSN did say Spurs outbid Liverpool, what would that be then £15 million?

Should have started earlier then. It seems to happen the 31st of August and January every year with Harry.

Why did Spurs want him? They already have Pienaar, Modric, Van Der Vaart, Palacios, Huddlestone and Jenas who can play in the middle. Were they bracing themselves for losing Modric in the summer by any chance?

Its the Harry Redknapp way to buy excessive amounts of players to play in every position

I really didn't understand Spurs' bid. Parker and Phil Neville were understandable since they could do with another defensive minded midfielder (plus Phil would also give them an option for both fullback spots), but Adams would be pointless with the players they already have.

Adam will replace Modric when we sign him in the summer :wenger:

Spurs have to operate within the 25-man squad rule - within the age limits concerned - the same as everyone else.

I hope so. Well, the Modric bit anyway, I like Spurs so would hope they'd sign a better player than Adam to replace him. But Spurs definitely aren't planning on selling, so they wouldn't be looking to sign a replacement.

I have felt like the majority of the people laughing at 'arry and him being a transfer muppet have been a bit unfair on him this window. Virtually every other player they seem to have been after did make some sense and would've strengthened them. Although the amount of completely different strikers they supposedly bid on seemed to be a bit strange, obviously he didn't have a particular type of striker he wanted and just wanted any that he felt was better than he already had.

But Charlie Adam just doesn't make any sense at all. Doesn't fit into the team.

i read that spurs bidded 7 and that was accepted but before that everyone was saying liverpool bidded 14.

Just something from Oliver Kay webchat on The Times...

"Charlie Adam, I've not been given any cause to think that United have struck a deal with Blackpool, but I do know that United plan to watch him between now and the end of the season. I don't necessarily think he has the class to be any more than a squad player at a top-six club (that would include City, Spurs and Liverpool on the basis of the creative/attacking midfielders that they have), but he's certainly a good player. Is he United class? Not in my opinion, but he is probably the player that Darren Gibson will always aspire to be."

Interesting.

So Charlie Adam signed a 2 year contract when he signed in August of 2009. Which makes him out of contract this summer and if I'm not mistaken, he's free to negotiate his move to the next club now that he has 6 months left on his deal, is that right?

So if its as it seems, that we are interested in him in the future... We could get him on a free in the summer and at worst he'd be a good player to fill in for Scholes if Scholes plays another season.

Signed a 2 year deal in 2009 according to wikipedia. Obviously not the best source. Says there's the "option of another year" - I dont remember him taking up that option and theres no chance of it now

Pretty sure I've heard Holloway say a lot of times that his contract runs out in 2012

Although it would explain why they bid so low for him

Wouldn't they have taken £6.5M rather than lose him for nothing though? plus it seems odd that it was never mentioned in the media during the window.

"FOLLOWING Friday's announcement that Valeri Belokon was setting up a fund in to invest in players for Blackpool FC, The Seasiders today completed the signing of CHARLIE ADAM from Scottish giants Glasgow Rangers for a fee of £500,000.

The 23-year-old, who enjoyed a successful loan spell at Bloomfield Road at the end of the last season, has signed a two year deal with an option for a third season and becomes the club's record signing.

Adam, who has two caps for his country, is expected to make his first appearance as a permanent 'Pool player on Tuesday night, when the Seasiders play host to Premiership giants Everton, kick off 7.45pm, although the club are waiting for international clearance for the Dundee born star."

Not if it means they get relegated and lose a lot more money

And the media are idiots. Obviously.

I think thats the official blackpool site I just quoted from? Might not be.

It could well be that he's already agreed to a third year and took up that option - but if he hasnt, and I havent heard anything about him doing that, then he's not going to do it now thats for sure.

Alternatively sometimes its the club that decides on the extra year - maybe thats the case

"Charlie is our captain and best player – I have never had anyone as good as him, anywhere – and he has 18 months left on his contract. So if Liverpool want him now, instead of waiting until summer when it would be easier for us, they have to pay a fair price, a price that reflects the loss to us. That's the way my chairman sees it and if Liverpool don't do things correctly he will dig his heels in."
Ian Holloway says Adam can leave but only for the right price | Football | The Guardian

So either Adam has already agreed to a 3rd year, the club were in charge of deciding on a 3rd year, or Holloway is just saying whatever he can to try and keep hold of the player or force the price up.

It was definitely a 2 year deal from 2009 with an option of another year, if thats the official blackpool website I quoted from above. It looks like the official site so

I know our media are pretty crap but a detail that huge would surely not pass them by, and judging from Holloway's comments he must have signed the years extension.

he s not as bad as some people over here make him up....+ he s scottish....so i wont be surprised if we try to sign him.

If there is an "option" of a third year that will usually be for the club, rather than the player to decide. They've probably taken that option already.

He's not out of contract in the summer. Why else would any club bid for him.

Plenty of clubs buy players out of contract in the summer.

Regarding the extra year, even if its the club's choice - surely the player has to also agree to it? Or is there nothing for him to sign at that point?

Well if I was the Blackpool manager, even if I had got 10m for him ON THE LAST DAY, which was when everyone was trying to sign him, I would not have taken the deal either. He is one of their best players if not the best, so selling him on the last day would pretty much mean relegation.

Even if teams offer you 10m on the last day, there is literally no time for the receiving team to go out and buy a replacement, hence it was the right decision to reject offers and keep him.

Indeed, but usually at greatly reduced fees. Players can also discuss terms with other clubs, even if they cant sign pre contracts with another team in their respective country.

As I understand it the usual practice is that a club often has an option of an extra year. It may rely on appearences made, or they may have to raise his wages or pay something else to the player, depends what was agreed at the time, but they can usually choose to take it up.

Rest assured. If he was available for free in the summer everyone would be well aware of it.

He will be ours in the summer according to the timse and radio. :nervous:

And we have money to spend?

Convinced its bullshit.

He seems a dead cert to move to Liverpool. I don't think that SAF would make a comment saying that £10m wouldnt even be enough to buy a player's leg, if he planned on buying that player himself. His comments were to make sure that Blackpool got a fair price for him from Liverpool.

Great player, has single handedly kept Blackpool within a chance of staying in the EPL. How much would he be going for?

Not as good as Scott Parker this season though, despite the fact that he's scored more, created more, plays with worse players AND has actually kept his team up. That award is just a giant joke :wenger:

I thought Adam was very over-rated but then watching him a bit more, he does seem like a very good player.

Not top 4-5 quality though.

I think the likes of Everton,Sunderlan and teams fighting for the top 10 could really do well with him.
