Champions League Semi Finals (24th April - 2nd May)

Bloody hell, imagine the feelings with this scenario, City - league, Liverpool CL, Arse - EL and Chelsea beat us in the cup! I would go into a cave for the summer.......
Christinaa is still going to be savoring that sweet 2nd place finish.

Nobody is going to remember or care who came second in the biggest one horse race in Premier League history. The title had been decided by October.

Ahh, so nobody realises that the points total we have this season could have won us the league during any other season ?

It couldn't?

Extrapolating your points total to 38 games that would have won you the league 3 times in the past 18 seasons (not counting this one). In nine of those seasons, you wouldn't have finished 2nd either.

The PL is the best and hardest league in the world and played over 8/9 months.

It's a very difficult league, so 2nd place means lots.
TBH I'd rather be 3rd and in a CL semi-final with a shot at winning than being 2nd in the least competitive season ever and dumped out by the likes of Sevilla..

Have they the chance of another treble? If yes it would be funny if there was one pre-Pep and one post Pep. Both won by a pensioner brought in to hold the fort.

Yes, if Bayerns wins the CL it will most likely be a treble because they are facing Frankfurt in the DFB-Pokal finale and won the league already.

If Heynckes does it again, it will instantly make him the best Bayern manager in history.

Just imagine.

2012: Heynckes made a 2nd place treble
2013: Heynckes won the treble (his Bayern side is amongst the best sides in history of this game, they basically played a perfect season on every occasion)
He retired, no treble anymore.
2017/2018: Heynckes rehired after beeing trashed by PSG, goes all the way to win the treble.

They way I look at it is, it's the manager who is willing to change their tactics against Liverpool, is the one I want in the final.
Against Psg away, Zidane changed the midfield to Kovacic, Casemiro and Asensio to get more legs and energy in the team. It worked wonders. They looked much more solid. So he may tweak it against Liverpool.
Munich have Martinez and Thiago in CM, which looks okay on paper, but will definitely get over run by the press of Liverpool. But they may sit a bit deeper than Madrid will, which is what Liverpool don't want.

It will be interesting to see how the game goes tonight and will give us a better idea how they set up. I just wish Athletico Madrid were still in the competition , because they are the only team I would be confident of ending this nightmare of Liverpool winning the European Cup!

Not quite. As noted above, using our current points/game average, we're on course for 83 points, which would have been enough to win us the league in 3 of the last 18 seasons.

Even if we win of all our remaining games, the maximum points we can achieve is 86, which would have been enough to win us the league in 4 of the last 18 seasons.

Not sure if it's been posted, but Bayern v Real is being shown on BT Showcase HD on Freeview UK.

People keep talking about liverpool midfielders and defenders being shit....for one thing, in their defence only lovren is bad. The other 3 are solid, good players. As for the midfield of henderson-wijnaldum-milner well, when they play at 1000 miles per hour it doesn't really matter how good or bad they are. That's also the reason for their collapses: when they don't play at 1000 miles per hour, it does matter that 2/3 of their midfield is made up of average players and they have Lovren in defence. The collapses happen when they can't sustain the pace, in cases like yesterday due to fatigue

Boring old ass james milner is one of the most underrated players in the world, and it's simply because he's plain boring old ass james milner. If his name was Max Fightmaster or if he were south american or if he looked like Gennaro Gattuso people would have a completely different opinion of him

On a more serious note, i dread what's gonna happen in rome next week. Don't think Roma ultras are done with it, not by a long shot, and apparently some 600 english hooligans might be making the trip as well. :(:(:(

I'm curious to see how the referee manages the game after what was said after Juve.
I imagine a very heavy, leaden match.
Heynckes gets something special in Javi Martínez and I think that the encounter with Casemiro will be interesting.
I am also afraid of a perfect performance from James as a vendetta.
I personally would opt for a very populated midfield, without Karim and Bale, with 2 between Isco / Asensio / Kovacic.
I'm slightly pessimistic, it seems that Bayern is now even better, but I think the motivational point of going for the third consecutive --the base of this season- in itself make a 50% tie

I don't think our midfielders get anywhere near enough credit. People look at them on paper, dismiss them and move on to talking about our forwards.

Henderson and Wijnaldum were fantastic last night. Not going to reflect on their stature as players though.

Midfield is still a major area of improvement for us but the players we have are better than they get credit for.

Also don't think our collapse last night was down to anything else than Lovren. He valiantly dragged them back in the game.

I hope real win tonight. Because I don't think Munich can stop the scousers in the final. But Madrid have the quality and the charisma.

No

Nobody gives a feck, nobody will remember. People will remember your exit against Sevilla though.
Exactly. Us accepting second as a good season is us being Liverpool when Slippy G did the business for them.

If Liverpool win the CL, does it put to bed the debate, if it was even still a debate, that winning the CL doesn't mean you're the best team in Europe? This Liverpool team is going on a good cup run and it's all falling into place, but that's about it.

Just like nobody gives a feck about Bayern winning their joke league year after year.
Cute. You know it’s true though, as long as Mourinho doesn’t win anything essential, people will hold games like Sevilla against them. And being outclassed by City in the league surely doesn’t count as an archivement in your eyes?

Sevilla was a real low point but can happen. See Barcelona against Roma.

I think not challenging City properly is what will be held against Mourinho but we have made progress in the league which should be recognised and deservedly sit in second place.

True we only won 3 of the last 4 CL. I dont understand how can you be a Madrid fan and be pessimistic. And what makes you think they are better than last year?

They lost their best player (Neuer) and best defensive midfielder (Vidal) and Robben and Ribery arn't getting any younger, and if we fail we will be able to finally fire Zidane and Benzema so it's all good.

Kloppster's 6th final, 6 times la'.

Ronnie or Lewa should be destroying Lovren. Neither Reals nor Bayerns defense is the quickest, though.

Agreed. Said the same last night, they aren’t even the best team in this country (unless for some reason the table lies all of a sudden) so how on earth can they be claimed to be the best in Europe?

2nd place in the Premier League means nothing to some people.
A long distant second this year.
In comparison to a CL final place and having the whole world watch you playing fantastic attacking football I would swop second for sure.

That logic can be applied to our champions league wins also then??
The most consistent team wins the league but doesn't always mean they are the best.

so you're saying Liverpool are better than city ?

Not really because we won the league title as well and were domestically the best. So that's just wrong. The best team wins the league, I don't get how people can say otherwise.

We’ve won the league the last two times we’ve won the champions league so no, it can’t be applied to our wins.

Never understood this way of thinking. It's basically loser's mentality. Bayern and Real have every chance there is in a potential Bayern/Real vs. Liverpool final. Especially Real would actually be favorites considering their pedigree.

Denial. A cornerstone of the losers' mentality.
