Champions League Round of 16 fixtures

Btw, i am done with this debate. I still think we will have atleast a 50:50 chance of us beating Bayern.

What do you feel ? We'll get routed ?

Nope, I feel we'd have a great chance. As both you and I said earlier, it was close last time and since then both teams have improved.

I'm amazed there's a debate going on here.

Bayern are a superb football team, the German league has certainly improved. There's no question about these 2 things.

And yet I fall into the trap again, I'm a complete Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime. Note to self: make point, move on, don't get caught up in bizarre debates.

If you ignore the different definitions people can have of Superb, i agree with this.

German league has certainly improved, but as a overall league it's still below PL and Spain and slightly below Serie A for mine in terms of quality around each team.

Also, Bayern have been good in Europe for a number of years now, then the likes of Schalke and Leverkusen used to have a good run too. Similar with bremen troubling us a while back. Don't get why you are making it sound as if it's something groundbreaking ?

I didn't really know what we were debating before and I'm even more unsure now. It seems like you're just nitpicking small intricacies. That'll do for me.

Btw, CL has become a lot of more competitive since 2007/08 since when we won it last. These days there are more good teams spread around the continent.

Who was the best team in Europe last year then?

Checkmate? :D

I think it was Barca. I know they didnt win the league last year but they won the league what three times in a row before that? And they won two Champions League in three years before last year. Which is way more than what Bayern has achieved over the last five years. So I still think Barca were the better team.

The came 2nd in their league to Madrid & they didn't win the CL. I completely disagree with saying they were the best just because they had been before.

Normally I'd have said it was Madrid last year but Bayern outplayed them twice & deserved to knock them out, they were also incredibly unlucky in the final, hence why Bayern get the nod over Madrid for me. Especially now we've quashed the idea of being unable to be the best in Europe if you don't win your own league.

Barca were in 3rd place last season imo.

yep. especially if we go through and barca get dumped.

us, milan, juve, bayern, dortmund, schalke, psg, porto would be a great qf's.

IF we beat Madrid, then we're going to be in for an exciting quarter final indeed. Only team I'd preferably avoid would be Bayern or Dortmund. Would be fantastic if they faced eachother

@I am Always right/

You are excluding Barca because they lost the league to Madrid who then lost to Bayern on Penalties?

Then how about excluding Bayern because they lost the league to Dortmund who finished at the bottom of a easy group ? A group which Arsenal comfortably won ?

There was simply no one clear strongest team last year.

Not a handball, imo. Even if it hits his upper arm rather than face/head and shoulder, it's completely inadvertent.

Surprised to see AC Milan beat Barca. Would be good if Milan can knock them out. Can see the second leg being very difficult for Milan though, Barca at home are going to throw everything at them.

The convention is that an attacker can't benefit from a handball even if accidental (correctly I think).

That's not how the law is written though. I think it's a cop out when referees blow the whistle on obviously inadvertent handballs by the attack yet ignore borderline or intentional handballs by the defense.

Besides, I'd say it's a handball on Messi first since it hit his hand. His arm isn't out but he leans into the shot and hits it with his upper arm. About as much of a handball as Milan's since he deflected it wide of goal.

matt, what's the best supported club at duke? in terms of true supporters, not just students walking around with hard-ons for messi, ronnie, or zlatan.

There are quite a few United fans. askabob being one. Barcelona were becoming more popular when I graduated in 09 (huge surprise). I'd say it is United, then Arsenal or Liverpool. Barca, Madrid, and Chelsea were the other popular teams.

I remember watching the Bayern-Inter final in 2010 and a guy walked through with a Cantona shirt.

Yeah, we lost thanks to a sending off and then good finishing by them/poor by us. But it was a 50-50 tie.

And we didn't have RVP then. Rafael was inexperienced and Neville was on his last legs plus we were playing Gibson in midfield and Park.

While they had Van Bommel playing well, and a in form Demichelis and Badstuber at the back.

Arsenal won the midfield battle yesterday, btw. Their defence and lack of quality striker let them down.

Their current team is light year ahead of the team we came close to winning against a few years ago.

They are even far better than they were last year and they still reached the CL final.

Admittedly this year they haven't been up to the same level as they have been over long parts of the first half of the season but I guess it's only a matter of time until they are back to their best again.

I think it would be a very close match.

Should Barca really be thrown out by Milan and we manage to kick out Real I can see a lot of potential candidates who could win the CL this year, hell even with them still in the competition I feel it's much more open than just a few years back.

It was funny how Real Madrid were at a disadvantage because they had two matches with Barcelona coming up just before they face us. Although Barcelona have a week's rest before facing Milan, it still must take something off them.

Great second round ties and I for one, can't wait :D
Come on Milan

I think our game against Madrid proved that we have a very strong team. If Barca go out, we'd probably be joint second favourites with Juve provided we go through. Bayern would have the best chance but if we manage to take out Madrid, we'd have the confidence to take on anyone.

ah askabob...does he not post on here anymore? Must be too busy geeking out over BME. given carrick's importance to our season i would imagine he'd be turbo-posting on here.

Bullsh@t

Basically correct (although it was Alba, not Messi). The Laws are pretty clear - although mostly ignored by pundits and Caftards.

Handling the ball

Handling the ball involves a deliberate act of a player making contact with
the ball with his hand or arm. The referee must take the following into
consideration:
• the movement of the hand towards the ball (not the ball towards the hand)
• the distance between the opponent and the ball (unexpected ball)
• the position of the hand does not necessarily mean that there is an
infringement

The first two factors come into play here. The third refutes the suggestion that where his hand/arm was is a determinant in this case. And that's without the more obvious point - the ball hit his face.

:lol::lol:

Correction:

The Bundesliga is slightly below the PL and La Liga in terms of quality around each team, and clearly above Serie A.
