Champions League Round of 16 fixtures

Again against Barca! It's like us packing our box against reading! It's completely different doing it against people well below your level.

It was only the other week we played a large part of our game against Southampton in the same way

They out thought Celtic.
with their clever tactics

we will have to play like Juve tomorrow

Madrid rely on pace and the counter attack - if we go at them leaving space we will have serious problems

Jones will start - that will be a sign of our intentions

What did Celtic do besides Ambrose's free header ? Someone here posted that they had " plenty" of chances !!!! uh.. which exactly ?!!

The scoreline is harsh, but it's not like they were superb or something !!

Match fixing?

• Stripped of 2005 and 2006 Serie A titles
• Out of 2006–07 UEFA Champions League [8]
• Three home games behind closed doors
• Relegated to Serie C then up to B on appeal.

Worse than drug cheats who still have to win there races matches Juve bribed refs to make sure their was only going to be one outcome.

People seemed to think people singing was going to win Celtic this match against a team that almost never loses like Juve. Ridiculous.

Oh, come on if we play like Juve today, Madrid will slaughter us with their attacking quality.

Juve were struggling with the high tempo game Celtic were playing, but Celtic didn't have clinical finishers or extra quality to penetrate Juve further whose defense was looking dodgy.

Last time we upped the tempo like that against Italian teams that were struggling we beat one comfortably in Milan and slaughtered another one in Roma.

The scoreline would have been harsh if Celtic had tested the goalkeeper and didn't score. At least that meant that they had tried to score. Did they actually try out the goalkeeper or not?

Juventus were punished (while other top teams got away with it and one of them even got awarded a fecking league title that they never even won) and paid the price. Why you're bringing up that shit I'll never know. Juventus fairly beat Celtic and suddenly it's "THEY feckING PAID THE REFEREE!".

the " 0 " is not harsh.. the " 3 " is

This wasn't some elaborate plan by Juve FFS.

They were struggling against the tempo, but got lucky with a defensive mistake. Then they sat deep while Celtic didn't have the quality.

Then they got some more defensive mistakes. Against a better team upping the tempo they would have gotten smacked.

I agree, if they played like that against us?

Blimey.

struggling for 3 minutes !! big deal !!

Not saying Juve is superb, but they have struggled for less than 10 minutes in this match.

If some of you lot had your way football would be the worst sport on the planet.

Dude, I think we all share your sentiment, to an extent. We'd all love the gung ho, open, end to end type entertaining attacking football to be the norm.

But it's a very romantic, slightly naive way of thinking. I actually think SAF was the same and hence we always struggled in Europe, where teams were more prepared, calculated in their approach and SAF adjusted.

We've been actually one of the best teams "away from home" in Europe over the past 5 years or so - including Barca and I speak under correction, but we often deployed a 4-5-1 formation, playing on the counter.

Anyway, I think it was a brilliant performance and execution by Juve tonight.

They had an impressive record at home, 16 games unbeaten until tonight.

Oh stop going on about fecking if's and but's. People said this was a system and setup 20 minutes in and people tried to claim that was bollocks. I said 20 minutes in they set up like this and would tire Celtic out and pick them apart, that's exactly what happened. Celtic got tired and made mistakes, simple. You seriously think Juventus cant improve on tonight's performance or bring a different system and set of tactics in a bigger game? You're mental if that's what you think.

They kept a team with far superior players at bay for the majority of the game. Unfortunately for them their lack of quality in the final third really was clear to see, their final balls and awareness of what was going on around them really let them down. Against a well organized Italian defence and the Buffon in goal they didn't really have a chance. When it came to giving it a right go and determination though they can't be faulted.

Great result for Juve, pretty much through now, although the scoreline flattered them badly. Their midfield couldn't live with Celtics pressing at times and better teams will punish them.

I'd be confident of beating them if we got them next round. Small matter of Real Madrid for us to overcome first though! :nervous:

Nah, struggling for atleast the first 20 minutes after which they stopped pressing.

It was almost like Roma vs Us, when we smacked them 7 - 1 on a clinical day.

I don't think they were brilliant, they were effective, and benefited from the toothlessness of their opponents, both at the back and at the front.

I understand how harsh this result looks to anyone rooting for Celtic, but Juventus is the better team and doesn't need to put the same effort to win games. I think a fan of one of the best (and currently one of the most effective in terms of results) clubs in the world would understand that.

Agree. I was just commenting on people thinking Celtic had "plenty of chances" !!

There were atleast 2 attempts that went just wide, then several decent chances which were not as clear cut as Ambrose's header but still chances that given 5/6 better players would have scored. Hooper had 2.

Juve knew exactly what they were doing, it was obvious from the start. Sit back and let Celtic over commit then try and launch a quick counter with a ball over the top. They also deliberately tried to hold it in their half so they'd get pressed so that as the game went on Celtic would get tired and they could pick them off, which they did.

They got the game plan pretty much spot on without ever really having to get out of first gear.

It was like watching a lower division team in an FA cup tie with a PL side

Inferior team has a plucky go, superior team bides their time and picks them apart

I can't see Celtic having nearly as much of the ball in the 2nd leg. Not only is it over, but it could also get embarrassing on aggregate if they're not careful.

I'd love to get Juventus if we get past Madrid. That'd be another tasty tie.

I dunno

was listening to the guardian podcast and I'd agree with Sid Lowe

the teams that have beaten Madrid this year have defended deep, kept it tight and picked them off

if we leave a lot of space or leave Rafael/Rio exposed against the pace of Ronaldo we will struggle

wrong thread but you would go all out attack against Madrid at their place?

Spot on. Plus the commentators were treating them like they were conference playing against Spain. 'They tried hard but it wasnt enough'. If my team didn't try hard they'd not be playing again. Spose they had to make it seem more exciting than it was because they didnt have an english game on.

Juve more-or-less did the same thing as Chelsea did against Barca and Bayern last year to very little praise, despite winning the trophy.

Albeit against a Inferior team who had lack of quality.

Whats this about Celtic not taking their chances? They didnt create anything, it was all huff and puff with no end product. Hooper barely had a sniff. Can only remember Ambrose header being the one clear chance they had. Other than that it was all Kris Commons shooting weakly at Buffon from 18 yards.

They had a lot of ball in the final 3rd but the delivery in play and from set pieces was shocking, the Ambrose miss was the only time they hit their man.

Oh, won't mind a defensive tactic with organization like we did against Barca in 2008 at the Nou camp where they had 1/2 half chances whole game.

But that's way different to what Juve did today. If some of the chances Celtic had and the posession in danger areas Celtic had is with Ronaldo, he will alone slaughter us.
