Champions League Quarter Finals (3rd - 11th April)

Gotta love how he also sends Buffon off because just pen wasn't secure enough, so at least Real would have had another extra time against 10.

Looked like the Real player was diving in for the ball anyway, contact was minimal and I'm not sure that's the reason he particularly falls over. May have been but certainly contestable.

No chance, he doesn't smash him warranted but it's clumsy and obstructive, at a point where Vazquez is about to score.

The force of Benatia's contact forces Vazquez to shoulder the ball away.

He maybe expected the contact and went with it... but unfortunately thats a reality for 50% of all fouls, doesn't make them legal.

It looked like a penalty to me, I've seen refs bottle out of giving them but still - a penalty was the right call. The red card seemed harsh but then again I don't know what he said - does Oliver speak Italian

There is no standout team in Europe right now. Real showed why they struggle in the league. They don't work hard enough off the ball. I'm starting to think that Liverpool can cause problems to any of the remaning teams. They work much harder than any of them and have a top attack to boot.

Yea I can't stand Madrid or Michael Oliver but that was a soft, but a definite penalty.

Jumped in his back, and if you don't wanna call that, fine. But the leg swing around his body not getting the ball is blatant too.
Not getting the ball doesn’t equal he penalty, he didn’t knock him down with his foot either. Just look at the replay from midfield view, yes there is contact but not enough for a penalty, very very soft.

Verbally berated the ref. Considering he got sent off I'm guessing he had some rather choice words.

Physical contact also.

I get the argument that's a penalty, but I just can't support calling it in the 93rd minute of a CL quarterfinal. Soft as hell, and destroys the story of what was an incredible tie.

Eh? if its a pen its a pen no matter what minute its in.

you guys thought my goat was gonna let a 3 goal advantage slip like certain man did yesterday? :nono:

No it is not clear pen. Barely touched him. But real players know how to fall down like they had been shot.

Vasquez didn't play for the penalty as he didn't see Benatia behind him. He clearly pushes him first before the leg comes across. It's a foul whichever way you look at it.

Doesn’t matter when it happens or what story it might ruin.
I’m fine when it’s a correct decision.

I suppose so. You can see where Juve are coming from as well, last kick of the game, petering out for extra time - Vasquez goes down super easily.

And red card for questioning the decision aggressively in a heated moment?

We all know Oliver is an attention-seeking pencil-necked arsehole. Genuinely despise the guy. He's ruined a potentially historic night.
How did he ruin anything? He got the pen completely right. And watching Buffon there I‘m quite sure he gave him plenty of reasons to give him a red card. I’m actually impressed he had the balls to do the right thing.

The penalty was very soft and awarding it at 92:30 clearly shows the referee was incredibly happy to put his hat on the game. That said, pride restored, we were drubbed 3 times by the Spanish giants in the last year but we have proven we are still alive and kicking at this level. Our bads with this competition continues but we go out heads up.

People saying it's a stonewall penalty because it was.

Juve would beat Liverpool anyway. Defensively better and have the players to score

It wasn't a stonewall penalty.

Also to give a decision like that at such a point the referee has to be 100% certain.

I'm tired of this Spanish domination. I hope Madrid get hammered in the semi-finals. Doesn't matter if it's Liverpool doing it, this Spanish domination is making the game a bit of a bore (yes, I know, probably not the best time to say that after the game we just watched)

I can see how the pen is maybe 60/40 so upto discussion but how is anyone arguing the Buffon red?!?

Buffon was a lot worse than those incidents, plus you don’t know what he said to him there either.

Dude hadn't been carded and he didn't even commit the foul. No way should that have been a straight red (I don't even think it was a penalty). Oliver just got scared because he's pathetic and pulled something out of his pocket.

Not shove the player in the back.

Wonder why he didn't think of that?

Cmon! Obviously he didn't mean to shove him in the back. Vasquez stopped to control the ball, and as Benetia tried to get the ball, him he made contact. Nothing else he could have done in that situation, other than allow Vasquez to control the ball and shoot from 5 yards.

Ronaldo showing once again why he’s the best big game player in the world...the pressure on that penalty having had to wait as long as he did, just wow.

Sucks to see a veteran/legend such as Buffon lose his cool and exit like that in his final CL. As for the penalty call, clear penalty. Madrid player had a grade-A chance to end it and got taken down. Easy chest-to-foot shot/goal it would’ve been. Not that the foul was malicious or overpowering or anything but nonetheless stopped what would have been a sure goal in all likelihood as the Madrid player had all the space in the world to connect the ball.

Then again, 3 Buffons wouldn’t have stopped that penalty anyways.

Another trophy for Madrid then, The hope was growing but I wanted them out in all honestly. They'll have Ramos back and will make sure this 'scare' won't happen again in the next round.

Ironic thing about all that is the ball was pretty much going for Vazquez gut and not at a pace he could get any power on a diving header. I think he was looking to take a touch, by which point benatia could have got around or at least Buffon could have smothered it. Definitely more chance of Vazquez missing than ronaldo from a stonewall penalty.

Didn't think anyone would be able to think these the last few years but given what we ve seen from Bayern, Real and Roma I'd consider it extremely likely Pool will at least make it to the finals if not win it all ... Argh :wenger:

Ah cheers , probably said “I bet youll get a new tattoo, “Gave real a penalty in the 97th minute”

He was sent off for dissent. He doesn’t need to have been carded or have committed the foul?

Bayern have a strong chance of beating them. I do reckon they'll see off Roma or Liverpool if they come up against either of them though.

Why is this verification taking so long?

Positive not United fan!!!

You can just tell who doesn't like Real Madrid. The Caf has no ability to be neutral.

That’s disgusting wash your mouth out!

That happens all of the time against every side and most of them don't get a penalty there, same as the one vs PSG.

It looks easy to signal a Penalty for Real Madrid, and the balls to do the "right call" in a leg were Juve are coming back from a 0-3 without any doubt... that's something you don't get to see out of the Bernabeu, if you think otherwise, ask Roma (and look who I support)
Sure, but the fact remains the call in this case was correct

First leg in reverse, ffs, almost killed me. We should have scored 3 or 4 tonight

Honestly I wouldn't bet on Madrid to beat Liverpool. They still flatter to deceive and will be fragile to Liverpool attack.

Nice dives by Ronaldo,I thought he cut that.

Bayern barely beat Sevilla 2:1 on aggregate. Maybe Sevilla is not so bad after all.

You’d be screaming too if that was United instead of Juventus. Little contact, no clear push or anything, very very soft.
We'd be screaming if wasn't given and it was Sanchez fouled.

Depends which team you support.

Do you admit that City were denied a clear goal last night? Or you had the luck in both ties?
