I have never been able to get BT Sport to work. I think it's a pile of steaming shit for that reason. They have like 1000's of error codes which you are supposed to somehow get a solution for, but you never can. Abysmal.

I'm guessing many people in NI will be getting free CL football from the (Southern) Irish TV stations after BT Sport come in anyway. They'll just have to ignore the terrible punditry.
I know around the border they can pick up RTE and TV3, but I'm not sure if the signal goes all the way to Belfast.

Unfortunately RTE/TV3 deals expires in 2015 as well.

We may well see BT enter the market down south.

Given that RTE recently pulled the plug on the Premiership highlights program I wouldn't be surprised if you're right.

Your TV licence money at work people.

The head of RTE Sport is a rugby man. Soccer would be banished completely if he could help it.

I thought the European Cup final was listed as needing to be free to air. But I don't see it here. I guess BT could make the whole thing subscription-based in Ireland.

It could be the case that Sky, so terrified of losing their PL lions share, overpays for the top package(s) leaving other rights open for BT to swoop for. For example I can imagine BSkyB already planning to allocate funds from elsewhere, possibly other sporting rights, to ensure they retain the lions share of the PL which would give BT the chance to snap them up.

Sky is in the unenviable position of knowing that BT can, and possibly will, outbid them on anything. So how do they respond? They can't drastically increase offers on everything. Maybe a few things but if they decided to retain the rest of their currently held rights by bidding excessive amounts on everything to stop BT from poaching then it'd be ridiculously and maybe even needlessly expensive. On the other hand if they focus on ensuring they don't lose the PL then they may take their eye off the ball elsewhere, leaving BT free to sweep up and even then they won't be guaranteed that BT wouldn't have outbid them for domestic football rights anyway.

I think BT's aggressive plan is very exciting for the future of broadcasting in this country. It may or may not be good news for the audience/fans but it's fascinating none the less. If Sky lose their grip on live sports then the entire face of pay television and the hierarchy of it which has existed for 25 years or so, will be turned on its head.

It's funny that this deal will only overlap the current Premier League deal for a single season. And that it essentially doubles what I will call their "top flight football" coverage.

Currently: 38 Premier League Games, plus half the FA Cup games? Many of which they don't have exclusive rights too.
2015/16: 12 Champions League Group Game Days, 6 Europa League Group Game Days, 17 Champions Leauge knockout days, 9 Europa Leauge knockout days, plus 6 Champions League and Europa League playoff days... I make that 50 Champions League and Europa League football days. I'm not counting individual matches because about a million games get played simultaneously. Likewise, I'm not counting that you can watch two Europa League matches a day. Most people will watch 1 or 0. Then add what they currently have in the Premier League and FA Cup.
2016/17: Premier League rights are up for grabs again.

Who has the rights?
Premier League - Sky Sports and BT Sport until 2016
Champions League - Sky Sports and ITV until 2015
FA Cup - ITV and BT Sport until 2014. BBC and BT Sport 2014-18
Football League - Sky Sports until 2018
Football Conference - BT Sport until 2015
England Internationals - ITV until 2018

I'd be interested in seeing what this new deal will do for the finances of the Europa league - it's notoriously less financially attractive than its big brother, but will this deal give the English sides a reason to take the competition more seriously than in the past?

The increase for English teams in the Champions League I'm not sure will make all that much difference as money is meaningless to City and Chelsea, though Arsenal obviously would feel the benefit of added income, as would the winners of the fourth spot (assuming another sugar daddy doesn't enter the picture and create a third City/Chelsea in the league).

Thats what I'm interested in too. Of course its not going to make other nations like the French take it seriously, but combined with the CL spot at the end of the EL we could finally see some competition :D

The Daily Mail have go so far to say that the FA Cup will be revived because the Europa League will..!
For the first time, qualification for the Europa League will also come with significant financial rewards, which in turn should help to reinvigorate the FA Cup and the League Cup as a route into Europe.

Whilst there is some logic in that, I think they are backing slightly odd horses. Still I think UEFA have fixed football. FA Cup leads to Europa League. Europa League leads to Champions League. Makes perfect sense, kinda.

Also, the real question is how will Sky market the Premier League now?
"And Liverpool are fighting for a place in the top 4 and a coveted place in the Champions League next year! Which you can watch live on... err..."

That's what I'm afraid of. Are there any other caftards out there with BT telly, and does it work for you?

I think its a matter of when not if now. BT want to show Sky who's boss and they have the money and backing to do it.
I fear for the future of pay TV. It will either price itself out of the market for the average customer or it will become very commercialised.

They have a replica pitch in the studio and David Ginola is trying to recreate Luis Suarez's free-kick, whilst Steve McManaman is squealing in a incomprehensibly high-pitched voice analysing it.

Jesus wept.

They actually had Ginola kicking footballs as part of their half time analysis.

Becker as their "analyst" for the Bayern-Dortmund game. Absolute stupidity.

They usually have a good group for the European football show though with Richardson, Horncastle, Honigstein etc. Not sure why they can't apply the same to their Saturday games.

Damn forgot about the Bayern Dortmund game. Damn damn damn.

willing to pay the price at the moment that I pay sky now the way I see it its going to cost more now for the same amount of football paying both sky and bt together for what's already on and the only way I would consider paying both is if sky drop the payments by the amount bt are going to charge however cant see that happening

can now see me getting rid of sky and also not bothering with bt quite a few I have also talked to are also considering the same

I doubt it'll be free to anyone once this deal comes in.

Virgin have just informed me they are whacking an extra £5 a month on my bill, one of the justifications is the addition of BT sport, the others are things I won't use. It's taking my overall Phone, Broadband, & TV package to over £100 a month. The time is nigh for the lower my bill or I'm leaving call. I looked at the BT packages for Phone, TV, & Broadband, it would seem I can get a similar package for much less.

If RTE/TV3 lose the rights I'll be extremely pissed off. Last thing we need is more UK based pay to view dominance.

Sigh. It's bad enough I have to pay the ridiculous fees for the British channels who half the time don't show 3pm kick offs.

British channels never show 3pm kickoffs :(

That's the problem with the UK too, because government shoved their oar in and forced Sky out of being able to buy all the EPL packages we now have to subscribe to multiple providers to get the same volume of matches we used to have from one. I really can't see how forcing people to spend more money for the same product is a good idea. Sure, Sky would of increased their prices, but I still believe it would have been cheaper than buying their package at its current cost PLUS subscribing to BT Sport/ESPN/Setanta etc.

Half the time? Never in many years have games been shown in the uk at 3pm. Every game when the fixtures are made is a 3pm kick off than the TV companies pick what they want and move them.

In Ireland we have option of setanta in the BT pack and get to see 3pm kick offs. If you get both sky and BT sports you will see pretty much 99% of utd games! not to mention a ridiculous amount of other football too.

Well worth it IMO, I wouldnt dream of watching the shitty CL coverage on RTE or TV3

It's going to have to change soon though because as the prices get even more extortionate, more and more people are going to switch to streaming illegally.

I'll watch United CL games on RTE, just because free HD. Just the bear on pitch time, though, and that's hard enough, awful, awful coverage.

That's true, but I have BT in hd. I am hoping they still give it as part of the subscription when their CL coverage starts.
