Bruno Fernandes | New contract until 2027

A contract extension which glaringly demonstrates the lack of strategy and vision at the club. Any senior executive knowing a new manager/coach was in the pipeline would have surely waited on this sort of business until the guy was at least in position and could assess the entire squad with Rangnick advising on what’s he’s seen.

The club doesnt care about that, they prefer to sign and extend players randomly and 'preserve' their value for some reason. They would have even more liked it if Ten Hag didn't have a veto over transfers. I don't know who the main guy and driver is for this, someone has to be in the last decade, but that person is fecking clueless.

I am not buying into this whole fresh start, it will be more of the same. Ten Hag has some job on his hands, because the club is a shambles.

Our Board and the football people are clueless. For the past 18 months, Bruno has been well below the level he had started at Man United. The Club most probably thought that the lad is unhappy because he is underpaid, thus making him one of the top earners will help improve his performances. Should have just waited for the season to finish and let the new gaffer decide.

I was one of the very few on here to call him out for his lack of the basics and poor all round play even when his stats were through the roof. I got laughed at of course.
He's never impressed me as a footballer.

Same. At the most basic level where there is no Opta, he’s never looked like a player I’d see on a Saturday morning at my nephew’s football and instantly think ‘that guy is clearly the best player out there’. There’s always a player who you notice within 2 minutes as being better than everyone else - touch, ball control, speed, passing - Bruno could never be that guy. A player like Greenwood, or Sancho for example - you can just see basic footballing talent immediately. It’s visible in everything they do.

Using one of my three posts

Bruno’s extension is everything that is wrong with the club and one of the main reasons why we need to still be very sceptical about our owners and club management.

On the one hand we’re optimistic about Ten Hag, Rangnick in his new role and our apparent ‘reset’ changing the way the club do things.

On the other we have incidents like this happening, before the new manager comes in, pretty much undermining his ability to set right the many wrongs plaguing the club in recent years.

Why not just wait?!

It stinks of the Glazers protecting an ‘asset’ based on revenue generation through merchandising, rather than what we are all seeing on the football pitch from this player who just got a massive undeserved reward for absolutely no reason.

And with that my optimism for the future is tempered, as it shows once again that doing well on the football pitch is not the number one priority at our football club.

Pogba is soooo much more of a functional player than Fernandes. There’s a spot for Pogba in title winning systems (as both France and Juventus have shown, heck even here winning the Europa and FA cup). Fernandes is the dime a dozen no.10 who thrive in chaos lower down the ladder like the players you’ve compared him to.

You have a point, we have seen Pogba not wreck a team system but he has still done it at times, particularly for France before 2016.

What I want to know is why did everyone get angry at Merson when he said what he did? Because we're allowed to slag the club off but no one else is? He wasn't wrong, it was an odd decision, I just hope Ten Hag can make use of him.

Wonder where this contract will rank with the other big ones from Arsenal and United in recent years. This one might well complete with Özil’s and Aubameyang’s at Arsenal, as well as Sanchez’s and De Gea’s at United. Some mental wages packets handed out by clubs who are too fearful to admit that many of their big name players either would otherwise rather not be there, or are simply heavily limited in certain areas.

Crazy that he was already tied down until he was 31 (almost 32).

We're run by a bunch of dumb cnuts, if they were worried that he'd kick up a fuss about wanting more money then SELL him! If a players main motivation is money then there should be one option, SELL! There's isn't a braincell among the decision makers at this club.

Bet this contract was rushed through so they wouldn't have to get the go ahead from the new manager.

He's never impressed me as a footballer.

Indeed, I think a lot of people got carried away with his stats. He has nowhere near the quality of players that they compared him to.

The only explanation for the pay rise is that we ridiculously have the likes of De Gea on £375k, Sancho and Varane on £300k, Rashford and Martial on £250k.

But this was a point where we could say enoughs enough, things have to change and salaries should reflect results. If you don't like it leave, but no just more of the same.

Turns out Bruno is bang average as well.
Getting very dislikeable over the last few weeks or months.

Guy is massively overrated and we've just given him a huge contract for the remainder of his career.

Such a dumb move. New manager not in place, plenty left on his deal, and this has been his worst season by far. How was this thought of as a good idea?

Can Bruno stay on his feet when he has the ball? Falls at every contact

we are run by fools who got in their positions due to nepotism.
give Mark Goldbridge or Adam McKola their positions and they may not have made worse footballing decisions

He will probably be good under a competent manager

Let's hope so. He'll need to relearn a lot. No way a competent manager can have him wasting possession with Hollywood balls all game, and most definitely not deep in his own half under the cosh.

He's a completely average footballer anywhere away from the attacking third and even there he's mostly nothing special.

Have we ever actually extended a player when he's playing well? This feels like the 5th or 6th contract in a row where we've given it to the player when they're playing abysmally.

Should be fined a week's wages every time he does that fecking stupid aimless hoof over his shoulder to nobody when receiving the ball from a throw in.

At least we'd only have to pay him during summer.

He has done many good things and he deserves a year under ETH. But that contract was stupid. What happens if he plays well? Triple his wages.

He was close to elite under ole who people said was the worst manager in the league so ETH will have to get a tune out of him

Yeah, he was a revelation. But he was playing in a underdog-footballing side, where we never dominated a game. Can he play sensibly in a dominant team, that's the question.

No, he wasn't and he has already been below average for almost a year when Rangnick took over.

Please just sell him when he still has some value . Never gonna fit in Ten Hags team

He won’t be able to function in a possession based setup. Donny will take minutes off him next season

No, he wasn't and he has already been below average for almost a year when Rangnick took over.

People should watch the early games of Bruno again, he rarely played well for 90 minutes and masked his poor performances with goals, usually inflated with set peices. He also had a free role which caused us tactical problems because the gaps between attack and midfield were huge.

He is so overrated it's painful, and for a team that wants to control games he's a liability.

Hopefully he’ll at least manage a ‘goal involvement’ in the second half, as we need a couple.

His contract extension is right up there with giving Ole the job full time as far as the worst contract decisions given by the club are concerned.

A huge liability and a statpadder if I ever saw one.

We will never win a midfield battle with him in the team. Liability.

Needs replacing somehow. Either a new midfield three or a new attacking forward.

We need to flog him to Real. They're desperate for a statement signing might give us £70-80m for him.

He doesn't have the standing in football to be a statement signing for them and they aren't idiots anyway to play with a no. 10 like him.

The backwards hoof over your head in your own half to no one in particular, a staple of all great no10s.
