I do wonder if we can we really expect a manager who made his team play hard working, gritty percentage football for a decade (barring maybe one year) to ever get us to play the kind of football do now. I really doubt it.
We only played this way for the last 2-3 seasons, but even then there were periods where we were great to watch and he tried new things. Moyes has just taken us to the extreme of hoofing it in the box with Valencia and young. No variety at all, and no pressing, a deep line. There are quite a few differences between our play now and under SAF but moyes has taken all of he bad things we had and made them more important to our game.

Watching a side like this play with such fluidity and flair going forward makes me wonder what we do in training.

Running and crossing. No joke unfortunately.

Liverpool have got their stuff together. They made a coupler of howlers with managers but now they have gone for a progressive and positive choice for which they are reaping the rewards.

Rodger comes across as both a tool and rather dour but he is progressive and adventurous with his tactics. You can't fault the job that he doing there anyway.

4th place is gone for us but we knew that anyway.

Lets see. I've seen nothing to suggest it but unless we do, I just cant see how Moyes can get us back on the top if he continues to stick to the way we play now. In that case, he'l be gone by this time next year.

Considering he's going to be spending quite a bit this summer, lets hope he does a good job there atleast. Cant be saddled with average players.

He's doing very well with them, there's no denying that. The British Klopp? No - don't think that's very apt. Klopp seems like a genuine character and no mug in a general sense. Brenton isn't very charming - not to me at least. And while he must have some idea of what he's doing with his players he clearly is a mug in a general sense. No offense, resident Scousers - he deserves all sorts of praise for what he's done with the team.

I think Rodgers is testament to what a manager can do with a group of players who all play in a similar fashion. Whenever a Liverpool player gets hold of the ball, the entire team basically starts running into space expecting the ball to land at their feat. United lack this 'trust' between players and in my opinion we've lacked it ever since Scholes retired the first time.

tactically second only to Mourinho at the minute for me

if he was able to sign some 30 million plus players Liverpool would be a major title challenger - definitely punching above their weight under him

They will need a good few players with European football next season. Their squad is very thin in parts.

Yeah I agree with this - its contrasts with the fear factor our players have this season - their hunger and desire to win is impressive

In 2011/12 we alternated between being an exciting, agressive, youthful team and being a tedious, old, slow but usually effective side. That summer, after what happened, Fergie went all in with the older team. We were always going to suffer the consequences of that

I just have the image of Moyes standing behind Valencia, who is drilling a multitude of balls along the floor with extreme pace at a mannequin, scoring points for the different parts of the lower body he hits.

As much as I'm disappointed to say he's done a bloody fantastic job so far. if we played the stuff they do we would be creaming ourselves. It really is the standard we need to reach and quickly!.

I'm a little concerned he's being given some recognition. Hopefully, more impression of Martinez laying the foundations for Rodger's career will keep the unwanted interest away.

And Utd fans, crank up the David Brent comparisons for our sakes. Please.

New five year deal would be warranted in the summer providing we get into the CL.

I'm sure he will get you there but ultimately you look at previous managers and that's the least of the expectations,he'll be expected to win the PL

I'll be honest and say when Liverpool employed him I thought he wouldn't last more than a couple of seasons. But fairs fair, he is doing a brilliant job and Liverpool are playing some eye catching stuff. It's taken him a season or thereabouts, he's bought the players he wanted in the main, albeit with not loads of dosh like city and chelsea. But players look well organised, seem to follow tactics and certainly look hungry and confident. A good manager can instil that

Rodgers is and always will be on a different planet to moyes when it comes to tactics as rodgers is trained in the arts of modern continental pressing passing possession football....moyes is an out dated graham souness hoofball clone and things will stay that way unless he appoints a really top innovative modern thinking coach over the summer as his number 2

togg, as you're a serious poster, Rodgers gave a rousing and eye opening delivery on MOTD a season before he joined LFC. He talked about vision, techniques, continental football and how to achieve the right balance over time. It sounded very David Brent, but at the same time I was wowed (maybe because he was joining LFC probably).

He had a half season with us, pre-Coutinho/Sturridge, when he struggled a little. Then Coutinho and Sturridge came in and our football changed. Forever. The second half of that season was mesmerising yet it was dismissed here by Utd fans because a) you were walking the league and b) you kept claiming we played our best football 'when we had nothing to play for'. This was not true, we had an outside chance of making 4th spot but blew our chances with Suarez acting a dick.

One season on Rodgers didn't get the players he was after (Costa, Mikhitarian, Salah, Konoplyanka, etc) but continued with the same football, philosophy and David Brent interviews. Seems like people are now listening to what he has to say. But it only took him half a season to achieve the wonderful brand of football - if anyone paid attention.

All I can say is that I hope the next manager we employ is as forward thinking as Rodgers.

Also, I still hope he'll manager Ireland in the future.

He has a long way to go yet to proven himself a top manager. So far so good at liverpool. If he makes top 4(which looks likely) he has to sustain that to be regarded as a success. Many managers have been able to do great things for a while but not sustain it.

Liverpool fans who are worried about Rodgers being noticed, who are you worried about noticing him? I can't see him leaving unless things go bad.

City might be on the lookout for a new manager if they implode in the run in.

Could very well happen too. They've a handful of very tough away games to play and couldn't even do the deed away against Norwich.

Top clubs with bigger money than ourselves (seeing as his wishlist players have yet to be bought in 3 transfer windows):

Man Utd, Spurs (possibly) and an outside chance City will tell Pellegrini to fock off if Brendan finishes above them too.

We wont go for Liverpool's manager and I dont see him leaving you lot to join Spurs. He's safe with you.

Fair enough - six months not a season. So would you say that Moyes has had enough time then to instill his philosophy on the game at united? :)

He is the perfect example of what a positive modern coach can achieve in the PL given time and support from the board. I wish United would follow the lead of Liverpool in this, they got in Hodgson, they were absolute shit when he was there, they recognized that the issue was the trainer with an outdated vision on football. They realized he wasn't the right man to let them play exciting football and get results with it. They nipped it in the but, firred him and brought in a coach with an entirely different vision that was known to let his team play in the right way. They supported him througout, they gave him time, made sure he didn't lose his starplayers and they let him bring in his own players within the budget. They are getting the rewards for that now, because Liverpool is playing some of the sexiest most effective football with by far the poorest team in the entire top 7.

Makes you wonder what a positive modern coach could actually accomplish given the resources that a team like Manchester United has. Makes you wonder why in godsname we ever went for Moyes and definiteley makes you wonder why after all this we are still sticking to him...

Sad times :(

So, last week he was a useless twit who picked the wrong side; this week he's apparently so brilliant that Real Barcamunich might poach him. Modern football, eh?

I worked out that I was smarter than the journos when I was 12, nothing that has happened in the interim has disabused me of this.

He didn't pick a wrong side last week. The only one at fault for that draw was toure.

Villa otoh....

You were doing so well up until that point. If you'd said squad I may have let it slide even though it would still be wrong. If you'd said top 4 I would agree with you but do you really think Everton have a better team? Even Spurs having spent over 100m in the summer don't have a better team IMO. More strength in depth perhaps but it could also be argued that is just a champ man team of "big names". I can't talk about the other team in this 7 as I can't remember who it is. Have you made it that high yet or is it Newcastle?

Either way, that front 4 today would all walk into any of the teams in 5th to 7th place. It could also be argued that the team has been without it whole first choice back 4 for a long time. Sakho, Agger, Johnson and Enrique all to return soon hopefully. Our bench is definitely weak at the moment but with their return there is no way on God's green that we are the worst team in the Top 7. If anything Martinez is the one who has got his team punching well above their weight with his philosophy and what a great job he is doing.

Yea I meant squad instead of team.

And I think Spurs have a beter squad than Liverpool but not Everton, so make it the top 6 instead of top 7. They have Suarez who is worldclass and Sturridge who is also really good, for the rest they have no players that deserve to be anywhere near top 4. Some very average footballers, who are playing and giving their 100% for their coach and a coach who knows how to tactically put it at good effect. Liverpool is punching far above their weight atm, like we are punching far below it.

Coutinho, Sterling, Gerrard?

Mignolet, Sakho, Agger, Skrtel, Allen, Henderson, Gerrard, Lucas, Sterling, Coutinho, Suarez and Sturridge are all good enough to be in the squad of a top 4 team.
