Brendan Rodgers on Goals on Sunday this morning:

Most embarrassing thing about it all was the X Factor promo they did for him to Ash's Shining Light. The only positives they could attach to it was 'worked under Mourinho' and 'play-off winner'.

Rodgers want to base Liverpool on Dortmund

Posted mainly for the first word, but he does use another of his favourite expressions:

Hipster Brendan Rodgers has said a club does not have to spend 80 million pounds in the summer to challenge Europe's elite and cites Champions League semi finalists Borussia Dortmund as a prime example.

Rodgers, 40, is beginning to turn Liverpool into a footballing force once more after totally revamping their style of play. However, he admits there is not a bottomless pit of money at Anfield and that glory needs to be achieved on a budget.

"You can challenge without spending 80m pounds in one summer," Rodgers told Liverpool's official website.

"Look at the example of Borussia Dortmund, a team that won the Champions League and then struggled financially. They went out and rebuilt and it took them four to five years to push on.

"Then they won the league and their European work suffered. This year you can see they have put their focus on Europe and they have lost their [domestic] title. That's a team that has been growing over five years."

Liverpool currently lies in seventh place in the Premier League but, since Rodgers arrived at Anfield, it's the football and the league position that he has strived to improve within the constraints of a budget.

"Unless you have got the Manchester City or Chelsea money and just bring in 70m-80m pounds worth in one summer to add to a Champions League-winning group, you need a different way."

Rodgers continued to explain, "I think Dortmund's is the best way because you are not just looking after the team but also the club.

"Of course, supporters will always look at the team but for me it's bigger than that to have success. It's about all aspects of the club so that when you do arrive you are in a strong position. It is the hardest step of all.

"Chelsea were sixth last year and look at the reinforcements they made to get back to that level again.

"Then look at Tottenham who were fourth and did not get into the Champions League on a technicality. They spent 50m pounds just to stay in there. It's a big ask, that's the reality, but we can really push on next year."

Transfermarkt have them down as spending £59,488,000 last summer.

It would make sense if there were implementing a Dortmund-like policy. However Liverpool have spent around £40m net under Rodgers and haven't improved at all, vs Dortmund who usually have a negative net spend.

He really does just talk bollocks. You can bet your bottom dollar another £30-40m will be spunked in the Summer to carry on this "Dortmund" project, despite the fact that over the last 2 years they've outspent Manchester City.

Rodgers, 40, is beginning to turn Liverpool into a footballing farce once more

Fixed.

Anyway, it's not that hard to turn a club into a PL force, given that most League teams are dead average.

Bullshit artist. There is no way he came out to be interviewed having not seen the incident. He knows what happened, you can bet he's watched it, just say it's wrong and call it what it is.

Most managers would do the same. One exception being King Kenny, who would have blamed it on Ivanovic.

He said what he had to really, there's no point making a comment now while emotions about the incident are high. It's best for the entire incident, to prevent it turning into a circus like last time, for him to wait and release a statement thought through by Liverpool's PR team.

I would imagine he was told even before he got into the tunnel. Although they don't have monitors by the pitch anymore it's guaranteed someone, somewhere is watching one and relaying stuff to the dugout.

Liverpool's PR team was responsible for half the circus to begin with...

That was before the lot of them were sacked and a new one was brought in, which forced all parties involved to issue apologies.

Rodgers has just told us "no player is irreplaceable no matter how good they think they are".

Rodgers is bit of a twat isn't he....going on about an innocuous arm in the face by Torres when his own player is guilty of far worse.

Basic diversionary tactics used by any employee in any profession. Especially when put on the spot. Harsh calling him twat on that basis.

He's already nothing like Dalglish with undying love/support for Suarez. He put him in his place for diving back in December (right?) and won't be backing him to the hilt with this either.

Handled it well so far, Friday press conference will be interesting.

"Having reviewed the video footage and spoken to Luis, his behaviour is unacceptable and I have made him aware of this."

''Luis understands that what he did is wrong and we've dealt with the matter internally. We hope we can move forward now.''

It'll be something boring and sensible like that unfortunately.

It'll include "going forwards."

I'm beginning to be quite unconvinced by him as a manager.

He seems to be slipping into all the bad habits of previous Liverpool managers: purchasing poor players and thus having a lack of quality in certain positions, combined with a non-effective style of football.

As far as I can tell, he is trying to enforce a possession based style of football, but, to do a Wengerism, it is sterile possession. You can see it perfectly today; randomly keeping the ball in very safe positions before passing it out to one of their ineffective wide players who will then proceed to lose it.

His acquisition of players hardly helps. Sturridge is showing himself to be the average player he is(despite a good spell today) and Coutinho, despite good flashes, would worry me as a long term option. He's a bit style over substance. Allen is out of favour and is out of his depth at that level. That's £40m right there.

Defensively they've been a shambles this season too. Chelsea scored two goals out of nothing today. They did nothing at all for them.

He shows few signs of resolving these issues. If he gets another £40m in the summer, you wonder where he'll spend it. He'll probably sign a few more mid-table players, as opposed to signing a gem. He just strikes me as being the level below Liverpool(and about three levels lower than where Liverpool want to be).

Stopped reading there Alistair. Was a good attempt at a summary but you completely lost your readership which includes Liverpool AND Chelsea fans with that statement. I'd say other fans too.

Average was probably the wrong word. A player with clear talent who produces average results is probably fairer.

If you look at his goal scoring record(not expecting 25 goals a season but probably 15), his general link up play and strength to hold it up, it really doesn't look all that good, despite other good attributes like good skill and poise.

Weird post Al. I think Coutinho and Sturridge look like they could be very good signings. Allen was probably a bit overpriced but he'll get better.

All the Liverpool fans I know hold no hopes for Allen. £15m is absolutely insane.

Inter seemed very happy to get rid of Coutinho for the price they did. I remember him looking exceptional in the CL v Spurs not long ago, but from what I've seen since, both there and at Liverpool, he's regressed a tad.

I think Sturridge was a good signing. You can't very well have Suarez biting his strike partner. So you hire a black player. Problem solved.

Since January he's scored important league goals against both Manchester clubs, Chelsea and a few others.

You need to stop digging that hole now.

Was never going to like Rodgers the second he went to Liverpool obviously.

But a few things make me dislike him more.

Saying he wouldn't go after Swansea players, then immediately signing Allen and trying to get Sigurdsson.

Completely writing off Carroll from the start without giving him a chance. He was actually coming into some kind of form at the end of last season. To just send a 35m man out on loan without getting anyone in was outrageous.

I do love that one minute today he was celebrating a last min equaliser.

Then suddenly walks into one hell of a sh!T storm!
