I wouldn't judge much on the handful of touches he has had at the euros. Not sure he's had a breakout season yet though has he?

It seems in general there's a fair bit of scratching around for high quality prospects at the moment.

He's not had a good tournament so far and his touch and technique are not impressive, but it's hard to judge on such a small sample size, the bigger question is whether he's worth the outlay being suggested when we have several prospects in the same positions already at the club

Might be worth a punt for £10m (we could also loan him back out) but for the reported fee I don't see the value in signing him this transfer window. Our budget isn't infinite and we can't flutter away half of it on "raw" players. We need to buy some established players (especially a right winger) to slot straight in to the first team.

£10m lol

Deeney is worth £20m+ apparently. This kid is still young. You pay for potential. I'll trust the scouts who have watched him more than just a couple of games in an international tournament, playing a completely different system to his club side.

Definitely hasn't impressed at the euros, but there is a reason he is rated highly in switzerland, so I have faith. Anyway, he has the physical attributes undoubtedly (unlike memphis who just looks slow), so that's always a good start in the prem.

you cant judge anyone just because of the euro games.

otherwise martial, zlatan, ronaldo, alaba would be utter shite, pogba would be an ok player and almer would be world class.

So now we have to pay £20m for every kid with potential? I don't think so. How much were Kante and Mahrez bought for? Sadio Mane? How much have Dortmund just paid for Dembele? The list of talented youngsters who have transferred for reasonable prices is endless. But for some reason we think it's okay for United to get fleeced because we're rich. We need to be smarter about our business and chucking away £20m on every Tom Dick and Harry who might become good isn't smart.

I'd like to see Petkovic play him on the right for Switzerland where he can use his pace. He doesn't look ready to lead the line and Shaqiri is pretty rubbish.

I posted my thoughts about 15 pages back and was ridiculed. I'll reiterate:

Nothing suggests that he's going to be a great player. He has poor control, poor dribbling and is weak overall technically - no matter what the age.
You can not improve basic attributes by much at this age.

I really hope we're not in for this guy. Even Depay and Lingard are much, much better.

Oh look someone else who knows better than scouts.

Thank You. :)
Btw. Even professional, well paid, experienced scouts are not always right. One word for you. Bebe.

Bebe has not had a bad career when you think about it. And it was not like he was a highly regarded prospect before signing with us. Which is why it was so surprising when we signed him.

Bebe was a horror show at United. Scouts got that wrong no? Anyway, that's not the point. The point is we're Manchester United and Embolo is nowhere near the quality of young talent we should be looking at. Even at his age, our academy prospects are much better.

IIRC Bebe doesn't come from our scouting network.

Bebe has been doing alright actually. Rayo Vallecano I think, but he's having a decent career in truth.

You never know with young players and the impact they can have. Did anyone here think Martial was going to have the impact he did? No but he was our best player last season. He wasn't a world beater at Monaco either but he took his chances and now everyone is raving about him. Maybe Embolo could have a similar impact either next season or even two seasons from now.
That is true, but the chances of these types of situations happening are very slim. I would prefer if we secure a proven talent who we are certain can come in and solve our problems on the right, before looking for development. However, if our scouting team has faith in him, then I am content with it.

Might have blown his chance at a move with these performances and certainly lowered his valuation. If he played like that for us I'd dread to see the Caf's ratings of him.

But that's the thing, he's not a striker. The Drmic injury forced Petkovic to start with Seferovic who has historically been hit/miss in terms of consistency. Derdiyok is in the squad so not sure why he didn't simply use a striker and play Embolo in an attacking midfield role where he can help to create scoring chances.

Not a fan of Petkovic though, this job was too big for him but the Suisse FA is conservative in their appointments

Agree. Why have football forums at all? No point discussing football matters when clubs clearly have staff that knows whats best all the time.
Well said. We all have opinions and surely it's what the football forums are for.

I quite like the look of this lad though. Raw and far from the finished article but strong, quick and would be a typical Jose signing.

I have no idea what he showed before the euros, but last night he literally looked like a defender playing in a striker position. I have actually seen defenders with better technique.

You can't tell from the Euros really. If I saw Martial playing like he is, I'd think we were crazy to go for him.

If we're really in for him, we'd have scouted him for quite a while. I think a few matches in a tournament where most of the teams are playing not to lose, is hardly a good gauge of a an attacking player's quality. I'll trust our scouts on this, although I'd really hate to see us getting fleeced. Leipzig was the only other "interested" club, and they probably would have gotten him for half the price quoted to us.

I would never sign a Player just because he had a great tournament. Turned out to be Money wasted more often than not.

I am pretty sure someone (hopefully not us) will splash out a big load of Money on Payet this summer. I tend to think there might be a reason why a 29 old Player is at West Ham.

Back to this Embolo lad: Never heard of him before to be honest. Watched him a bit closer yesterday. Seems to have potential but he Needs to work especially on his decision making. Rashford by comparison is 1 or 2 steps ahead.

Didn't impress me one bit last night. Looked clumsy and lacked balance, was lying down longer than he was standing

I'm glad that we have scouts whatching players over a long period and not just over one or two matches in a tournament to make a conclusion.
Embolo is rated very highly, that doesn't come from nowhere I think. Regardless of whether we sign him or not, imo he will have a great career.

He did seem to work very hard and looked like he wanted to be involved in all areas of the pitch, I can see why Jose might look at him as a long term prospect but not what we need for next season.

I think he's getting a harsh write up, that was a tough gig for a 19year old playing for one of the so called lesser sides in the tournament. He didn't have much service and had to go looking for work, lacked quality as a result.
