Breel Embolo | Signed for Schalke

There has been a huge increase in posters using FM as an argument of players potential and ability. Stop it, please.
I'm sure they are all tongue in cheek and not actual judgements of the player solely based on that. :)

Embolo looks like an excellent prospect. I am basing this off his Scoutnation videos.(laugh if you want) First time I seen his last year I was mightily impressed and have kept my eye out for his progress. Would be delighted if we get him as he seems to have a lot going for him. He is strong, quick, good awareness and is only 18/19. There is obviously an element of risk when paying big for a young talent but I feel this player is worth the risk as he is potentially a World class player in the making.

First game I watched him England vs Switzerland, he only played for about 20-30 minutes but he showed real bits of skill in that game.

I think someone said to find the next Martial, and they came up with this guy.

That doesn't mean he's the next Martial. It just means he fits the type.

He might be what we need in a couple of years though mate. Ibrahimovic will only be here a year.

Also, doesn't Embolo play on the RW?

Even if that's not where United see him playing, it seems we've got plenty of money. We can afford to buy Embolo as well as a RW.

I feel Mourinho is expected to deliver instant success and he can't do that by taking a chance with many inexperienced young players. We cannot buy a 19yr old RW who's actually a CF to fill in a glaring gap in our starting 11.

There are many that are quoting the example of Martial as if it's the norm. Martial is an exception. All young players with potential and little experience are not going to take the hardest league in the world by storm like Martial did. To expect that would not be wise.

If we are going to buy Embolo (which I highly doubt because we are being linked to every decent young striker) then we should at least buy a proper no.7 (as you suggested) and let Embolo, Rashford (and Ibra) compete for the ST position. Even then, as suggested by Varun, it would be a foolish decision for the player as his development would be affected. In that case why would he even chose to go to United.

IMO it just doesn't add up.

Our RW is very very weak. If the boy can do a Martial then why not?

I would be extremely disappointed if we did sign Embolo and he was the only we bought this summer capable of playing wide right. I've only watched him play a couple of times but didn't see anything to suggest he was ready to start for a club of our size; As for his second touch in those youtube clips it appears to be a tackle far too often for my liking.

Having Embolo and Rashford rotating with Ibra and the new RW won't be that bad actually. They'll get plenty of games, won't be rushed in given their age but also we will have options up front.

Embolo for 20m EUR is a no brainer really. He's highly rated so even if he flops we surely can get at least 10m or so off him in 2-3 years. Ibra is free, Embolo 20m, get a first team winger for 40-50m EUR and we have a pretty good frontline - experience mixed with also big potential.

Ibra, Embolo, Bailly, RW, CM and probably a #10 will be a great window for us.

Why do you think that ? We are one of the best clubs in the world at developing young talent. It may not be Fergie's era anymore, but a lot of the foundations he built still exist at the club. And Mourinho is no slouch either, he's given debuts to the likes of Varane and David Santon. He's as good as any to develop and nurture talents despite the perception about him. In my opinion, this is the perfect club for him to develop more.

I do agree with you about expecting Martial's level of consistency though. But if he takes his chances, then no reason why he can't cement that place. But I am sure Mourinho has plans for that wing even if he comes. There were reports that United were in the market for another CB after signing Bailly, so this could be true for RW as well.

So there's no reliable sources reporting on this?

You mean like the BBC? They'll probably jump on it when it's soon to be announced and they've been briefed. So far we've signed only one player this window and there wasn't a single peep about United signing him from anyone, let alone the traditionally "reliable" sources. The first report came from some random spanish outlet last week and days later he'd signed for us. The Embolo news broke yesterday from a local Swiss outlet who had a reporter with the Swiss national team. Today we got another report from the local outlet of the team he was supposed to have signed for in Germany saying he'd indeed signed for United. Just based on the way the Bailly transfer transpired I think it's safe to say Embolo will indeed be a United player soon.

Not got anywhere near the ability of Martial, but I do feel he could be suited to the way Mourinho will play. He has pace and power, but none of the technical ability or close control of Martial.

We bought a highly rated winger in Depay last summer and we've got another highly rated younger player in Januzaj; I'm a bit reluctant to buy another highly rated young attacker especially given we've already got Rashford & Martial and not forgetting Wilson too who has a great chance of making it at OT. I don't think we need to buy any other players with potential given there's Fosuh-Mensah & Borthwick-Jackson in the squad too and Shaw is still very young too. We need a player who will hit the ground running and fit in straight away, a player with experience. A squad needs a balance and we've got enough younger players.

I'm disputing that every young player can do a Martial. There's reason to believe he can because the talent is there but there's enough reason to believe he cannot because theres precedent for that as well.

i think that because at this age he needs what Rashford and Martial got and Wilson didn't I.e. Regular game time. That's the only way he would improve , not by sitting on the bench. Germany is a better league than the Swiss league and they speak the same language in many parts. It would be easier to settle as well.

Bandwagon analysis, last year at this time few (Wayne Rooney comes to mind) even knew who Martial was much less a highly rated prospect instead of an unheralded player in Monaco's stable of big money purchases. Embolo has been on the radar since 2013, most importantly he's become increasingly more important & effective.

To sing a familiar refrain, they are different players but to claim Embolo lacks technical ability is to reveal you know nothing of the player

I think we'll bring in a senior RW.

If we bring in Embolo, RW, Ibra as forwards I think we'll have a good balance to be honest.

Depay/Martial/Januzaj----Rooney/Ibra/Rashford/Embolo---RW/Rashford/Embolo

--------------------Rooney/Mata/New #10/Januzaj-------------------------

Will Keane I don't think will last under Mourinho. Fellaini and Young will probably be sold.

We'll have a senior player in every position - Rooney/Mata in #10, probably a RW, Ibra at #9ish and Martial making the left wing his own.

Rashford/Embolo/Januzaj bedded in with Depay future in question. Not bad.

Yes, but you are assuming that he's going to be sitting on the bench most of the time. van Gaal admitted at the start of last season that Martial was a buy for the future manager, but he forced the manager to play him more through his performances. No reason, why Embolo can't do that either. Sometimes fighting for a place on the starting XI at United is better than regularly getting game time elsewhere.

I think this guy would be a fantastic signing, admittedly I haven't really heard of him, but the last time I said that about a player it was Martial.

I think it sort of signifies the policy of the club going forwards and solidifies what I was really hoping we would do (if we buy him). Essentially we are signing the next crop of top level players in the game, its what Madrid have been doing for years, signing big players but also looking at their under-study and future replacement. Its the kind of rebuilding we haven't had in years and signifies a change in mentality at the club. Interestingly if this is a player Jose is going for it also shows he intends to stay longer than his contracted 3 years, its essentially the mark of a longer term project- I cant imagine he is signing players for the "next manager" as LVG once said of Martial or Memphis.

From what I have seen, he shows similar characteristics as Martial did, raw, unpredictable and quick. However I will say this lad is showing more promise in terms of one on one duels than Martial did last year (something Martial seems to have developed at United) To me, I trust the scouting network with kids, Id much much rather sign a player like this than say a Mane or the like (mid 20's predictable peak).

Ideally id like him to come in and another World Class RW weather that's Bale or someone slightly lower tier I don't mind just someone to play reliably on the Right and allow this kid to come in and have his say on the occasion.

Its a similar process with Ibra and Rashford except we have the younger player now we need the more experienced one, adding another striker wouldnt be a bad idea also in-case Ibra cant handle it.

If we buy a proper RW and Embolo then I imagine that he would be sitting on the bench. But if that RW ends up having as bad a season as Depay then yes your scenario might take place. Otherwise he would be sitting on the bench.

Martial took a chance by joining us from Monaco, Embolo could do it too, why not. But it would be smarter to get regular game time in a world class league at a side that assures you a starting place rather than a team that would buy you as a bit part player.

Maybe he can force his way into the side. But can he compete with Ibra for ST? Can he compete with the best like Bale or even Mahrez for RW I don't think he has the ability just yet.

I said he doesn't have the technical ability of Martial, not that he lacks technical ability. You can see as much when he dribbles, he moves fast with the ball but often in a slightly uncoordinated manner, similar to Welbeck when he broke through. Martial rarely loses control of the ball.

I think Embolo will be a wonderful player, and a steal at the prices quoted. But I won't expect him to have the same impact as Martial.

At a world class league, but for a side that has just gotten promoted and in all likelihood won't make a challenge for a title anytime soon. What he can learn at Leipzig, he can learn here too and more. We've had academy products like Drinkwater, Simpson become PL title winners and those were players who weren't even highly rated even by their own fans. It just goes to show how invaluable the education you get at United is. And it isn't just from playing games week in week out alone like you suggest, a lot of it happens behind the scenes as well.

Also a more simple question, would you much rather pay 15m euros now for a player with potential or maybe 60-75m in 5 years time for him if he become world class ? But I know your posts were mostly directed at which move is best for Embolo and not as such about the club.

You mention Leicester a bottom club where Vardy and Mahrez became the players they are and then in the same breath disregard the importance of having a regular starting position albeit at a smaller club. Leicester were a small club a few months back and had only just avoided relegation. So yes he can learn a lot even at a small club. Being at Man Utd doesn't come with a guarantee of becoming a great player and neither do other big clubs. There have been many world class players that have developed well at smaller clubs. I feel game time is the key here.

Secondly, I rather pay 50m for a De Bruyne than 15m for Embolo. Because I want to see us get better right now, not in a few years.

I'm apprehensive about this. The lad looks good no doubt but he will be coming from a weaker league so he will need some time to adapt. I HOPE he can be like Martial and just hit the ground running from the moment he steps onto the pitch but players like that are extremely rare. For example, we all had high hopes for Memphis last season and he was very disappointing. (I'm still holding out hope it was just a blip and he can put it behind him and challenge Martial for that left flank but I don't see it happening). I just hope we are patient with him and don't put too much pressure on him like we did with some of our youngsters last season.

but again his performance was more brute force

Brute force is an important part of the game. Referees no longer enforce laws against illegal physical contact so size and strength are becoming ever more important. The combination of lightweight, average pace and technically gifted is almost extinct in football.

Embolo reminds me a little bit of Zaha, but more head up and aware, a better team player, which is much more promising. Hopefully we can judge him playing against better players in the Euros.

What happened with our supporters, especially on this forum???

Whatever the club do some of you are never satisfied.

New manager. Crap.
Promising defender bought for almost peanuts in today's market. Worthless.
Now this guy. Young, talented, strong, fast and scores goals. According to reports for a fee close to €20-25m. Reaction. Not good enough.

I'm happy and hope we signs him. I trust our scouts and I trust Mourinho. If he don't deliver I can't live with that. Better try then fail doing nothing.

Let's see what he does in the euro. Maybe he surprise us all....

Being a long time lurker on this site I've noticed that virtually every thread regarding potential signings will generate a certain amount of negativity. Whether it's about the transfer fee or wages being too high, or whether they feel the player isn't needed or isn't good enough. It does sometimes feel like certain people wouldn't be happy unless we sign half the Bayern and Barcelona teams. But I think that's inevitable with a forum this large, and it's probably a good thing that people have their own opinions and are allowed to voice them, rather than everybody unanimously agreeing that everything the club does is right. We all have our own views regarding the direction the club should go and which players would be best. It's all good for discussion, but ultimately I think it's best to trust Mourinho in building a team capable of competing for trophies. If he thinks a player is good enough for our team then that's good enough for me.

I'd still maybe take another attacker, but this post makes me happy.

Well said. I trust our scouts and Mourinho far more than the guy on the street.

He is a very promising player. Exciting times.

Mahrez is 25, Vardy even older. They thrived at Leicester not because of the education they received there, but because of the system which best suited their style of play. I made that point because players who were considered not good enough for United have done well elsewhere, so we must have done something right. They are beyond the point of discussion since they are no longer in that "Developmental Phase" so to speak. I agree being at Man Utd doesn't come with a guarantee of becoming a great player, but it is the ultimate test for a player who aspires to be one. Some of the World's best players in the world right now had a majority of their development at a club with a reputation for developing talent. Barcelona, United, Juventus etc. There's nothing of note to suggest that Leipzig are such a team. You said it yourself, you can have all the game time in the world and still be considered a flop like how Memphis is seen as. Who's to say the same can't happen to Embolo at Leipzig ?

It's not as simple as saying More Game Time --> better player. There's a lot more to it than that.

Are any reliable sources saying that this is a likely deal for United? Can't find anything in this thread.

This guy is going to be a superstar. I really hope we sign him. He'll become a fan favourite.

No papers here. Just the local Leipzig paper and Swiss biggest paper. It's does look like his move to RB Leipzig which looked dead certain is off.
We won't know more until Switzerland get KO

Mourinho's transfer policy so far reminds me of his first stint at Chelsea and I like it.
