Boehly is going to ruin Chelsea (hopefully)

So what do you reckon you'll sign this summer, and what do you reckon you need?
1 or 2 mids. Striker and possibly a GK depending on whats available. Cant see a CB coming in, unless Chalobah goes, too. But i still think there is another handful to leave this window, so could be a revolving door for sure again. RLC [done], Gallagher, Pulisic? So who knows what we will need really

Nkunku. Jackson. Gusto so far.

What a weird career Edouard Mendy has had. From relative obscurity to one of the world's most respected GKs, and within 18 months back to Chelsea's backup 'keeper and a player none of their fans seemed keen to keep.

What happened?

Some combination of above average luck, Tuchel making us a more diligent defensive side when he came in, and almost certainly a desire to prove himself had him playing above his level when we won the CL. Tuchel trying to shift to a more dominant side that could challenge for the league that summer made his job much more challenging given his limitations in terms of ball-playing, and then a poorly-timed finger injury that kept him out for months this year.

Given his limited years at the top level and the lifelong financial security that comes with playing for the Saudis, I'm happy this deal seems to suit all parties.

So what do you reckon you'll sign this summer, and what do you reckon you need?

A midfielder, probably Caicedo.

What we need is goals, got Jackson, bit of an unknown quantity. Need others, not sure who is available, Vlahović possibly.

Maybe but we've signed three proven PL scorers in the last two years and that didn't work (hopefully yet in the case in one of them).

I don't think it's beyond the realms of possibility Jackson could become a smart signing, then add Nkunku to a hopefully vastly improved return for Sterling and things could be looking reasonable again.

The short answer is that he was never actually that good.

I find it sad that some Chelsea fans celebrate when a product of Cobham leaves the club just because they got a good fee.

Not pointing at anyone specific, but thats the picture you get scrolling and reading twitter/reddit the last 30 minutes. Yeah I know they are most likely kids, but still sad stuff.

Mason decided that. Most Chelsea fans would have liked for him to sign the contract he was given for £200k per week for 5 years before the WC, but he didn’t and the new sporting director withdrew the contract.
It is worth celebrating selling a player for £60m that keeps saying he will leave on a free at the end of the season. That is just great club business.

Major mistakes has been made before Mason decided to leave.

It’s a feck up. No way around it.

It's not 60m. If it amounts to 60m, it's that he'll have been instrumental in an opposition team's successes, which is nothing to rejoice about (unless you work for Chelsea's accountancy department?)

When did he say he'll be leaving on a free?

What a strange stance Chelsea fans have...

Great start to the window!

Just today the deal between United and Chelsea confirms that it's 55 million pounds with 5 million add-ons. So he has been sold for 60 already has he?:lol:

Will be glad if you get 60 as it would be mean we would have won something.

Just seen this post but you guys need some CBs badly. You were terrible in defence last season. A goalscorer is critical for you too, as it is for us. I reckon you'll get Caicedo, you've been linked with Veiga, and I've a sneaking feeling you'll make a big bid for Osimhen. I thought you were interested in Onana but we've had a free run at him so far.

Well in theory we spend 600 mn last season with all those add-ons as well. If that's acceptable then this too.

Its pretty wild when you take a step back and think that over the course of about 15 months Chelsea is probably going to end up buying 850-900m euro worth of players while selling 350-400m euro of players at the same time. That level of turnover in both directions has to be completely unprecedented in the game.

I think making strong predictions about how its going to work out is a bit of a fool's errand. We're in uncharted waters here.

Up until Lampard turned up we had the third best defensive record in the league. Hard to believe I know.

These are our current CBs

Silva
Fofana
Chalobah
Colwill
Badiashile

That is a good group. A talented group. We’ve replaced Koulibaly with Colwill from the last season’s group. An upgrade imo.

What we need is a GK. If we can sell Cucurella and promote Maatsen that would be ideal too, but otherwise the backline is good to go.

Until Lampard came in and ruined things even further we were like 3rd in xGA behind only Newcastle and City though?

I'm very comfortable with Silva, Fofana, Badiashile, Colwill, and Chalobah as a group, especially since we are almost certainly moving away from a 3ATB system. Can also throw Reece James and (gulp) Cucurella there in emergencies too.

Yep felt a bit like Sarri's season in the sense that our attack was a bit stale and our defence went under the radar, skewed by a few hammerings. Only thing I'm worried about is that Fofana and Colwill's injury records have been a bit concerning, throw in Silva's age and Badiashille already being out for a few months. Chalobah leaving would certainly change things.

Yeah all true - but at the same time given we aren't in Europe, it would definitely be excessive to carry 6 CBs for 2 spots. Have to hope not everyone gets hurt at the same time but that goes for every team I suppose.

What major mistakes that have been made?

Well I can’t name the specific major mistakes during this process, but if an 24 year old, champions league winner, two time winner of poty and academy lad ends in position where he, more or less, forces his way out of the club strongly point to that mistakes were made along the way.

Are you disagreeing?

Imagine buying nobody and being happy at £205m sales.

Only at Chelsea. It’s like watching the Woodward years on repeat. I love it.

No, you’re spot on.

Nkunku, Jackson, and (god willing) Caicedo incoming? Plus Colwill and (technically) Gusto returning?

Chelsea fans are celebrating sales because they were so obviously badly needed - and it's encouraging that despite the entire world knowing we have to trim the squad, we are still receiving reasonable fees that shouldn't handicap our plans going forward.

Also it's not like Woodward was even close to competent at selling players - not sure about that comparison...

You brought them players last season except for Jackson and let’s be honest who the hell is he.

Fair play for the sales but your only doing it because your poor planning meant you had to… add on top of that.. this only happened by chance because of Saudi.

It’s exactly like Woodward the plan might sound good but it’s so floored it’s actually kind of funny to watch.

Out of interest what are your players and positions you expect to be filled in the summer so i can have a view of what your team will look like for next season.

When we sold we sold ok. Got money back for Lukaku and Di Maria. It’s just that we didn’t set out to sell who we should have.
If we had set out to sell starters I’m sure we would have gotten a good accumulative price for them all. It’s not a badge of honour

Well sure - some of the deals were agreed last year but surely it's arbitrary to say that we aren't buying anyone when the plan all along was for them to join this summer anyhow?

The Saudi money combined is less than what we've sold Mount or Havertz for. People are fixating on us getting a total of 40m for three players when we had similar offers from European clubs for Ziyech and Mendy and we're taking a loss on Koulibaly. I'm glad we're taking the opportunity but let's not pretend like this is akin to us fleecing China for Oscar and Ramires in the past.

Odds are we'll push for another player who can rotate with Nkunku centrally but also play wide at times - Kudus from Ajax or Szoboszlai from Leipzig would make sense here. Would also love for us to get Lavia from Southampton.

First XI probably is something like:

Kepa
James-Fofana-Silva-Chilwell
Enzo-Caicedo(?)
Madueke-Nkunku-Mudryk
Jackson

Sure - not arguing it's something to be proud of in a vacuum or anything, but given the context with our backs against the wall needing to trim the squad it's a good thing to get above-market fees for players.

Certainly wouldn't want to raise a banner or have a parade or anything - but this is a better outcome than the alternative.
