Blaise Matuidi

Agreed. Having a creative and technically superb powerhouse midfielder to drive forward with the ball and start attacks, a runner to press like a madman and create space for others and a puppetmaster tucked in behind orchestrating the whole thing while shielding the defence is pretty much as good as a midfield can get without having some sort of freak crop of talent like Barca had with Xavi, Iniesta and Busquets.

I have a feeling Pogba, Schneiderlin/Herrera and Carrick/Basti/Blind will fill those roles very well for us under Mourinho. I can't see the point of signing Matuidi. He adds legs to a midfield, but I'm rarely impressed with his actual play. If we do get him and Pogba, I will start to wonder what sort of wages and signing bonuses we're offering, because if Raiola has that much of a boner for us this summer he must be getting the Pulp Fiction briefcase with every transfer.

Yeah Matuidi is a bit limited in his play. I can see why you're not impressed when you've watched him.

Personally I still think Schneiderlin/Herrera have a lot to prove, but I do think they'll be better than last season. 1 of them paired with Pogba + Carrick or a new DM is a fantastic midfield.

Probably doesn't matter though. Rooney will be one of the starting midfielders unfortunately. I don't think Mourinho will sell him or bin him to the bench.

I've been impressed watching him and Pogba's other fellow midfielders for France. Could be a great midfield in a club side.

and rightly so, although Deschamps, like LVG, sees Schneiderlin as a 6, a sentinel, which is wrong imo.
Well, he see's Kanté as a DM too. In my opinion Kanté should play the role that Matuidi does for France, further forward on the pitch. His ability to cover enormous amounts of ground is wasted in the traditional DM role where calmness and positional awareness is key. Put him in a midfield three with a bit of freedom to just annoy the living crap out of the opposition and he'll flourish.

I'd much rather we signed Kanté than Matuidi. He's younger, seems better on the ball and plays with an intensity that I've never seen before. If we plan on attacking with intent and pace, Kanté is the perfect player to start quick attacks immediately after winning the ball. We don't really need him either, though.

I don't think he sees Kanté as a 6. He was initially meant to be Matuidi's cover, with Cabaye being Lass' cover at 6. With Lass' injury Schneiderlin was called up, but Deschamps chose to play Kanté there because he sees him as a better player than either Cabaye or Schneidi, even though it's not his best position.

Agree. Deschamps insisting on using Schneiderlin and Kante as a 6 is odd, when both have excelled in playing as an 8 in a similar role to Matuidi. The balance is all wrong without Diarra.

Can't see us being interested in Matuidi/Kante at United unless Jose agrees with LVG and Deschamps that Schneiderlin is a 6 and not up to the standards he wants or knows something we don't about him and doesn't rate him as an 8.

I'm sure Pizza boy would love to get him a big move to us, but I can't see us going for it unless we decide to both jettison Schneiderlin and lose out on the Kante sweepstakes.

Question is, France is in the middle of preparation for their semi against Germany right now, why would the boss allow him to leave the camp for transfer talk?

Canal+ and others now reporting we're in for Matuidi. Bayern also interested. Rumoured fee: 25m euros.

Some French sources are indicating that Matuidi to United is close.

If we seriously are in for Matuidi i hope we still go for Pogba, just try.

Smokescreen for PogbON. Honestly though the scenes if we land both Matuidi and Pogba.

This will be such a boner killer after getting my Pogba hopes up. I don't rate Matuidi at all.

Not sure if Matuidi would be a replacement for Pogba. They're completely different players. Think it's more likely Matuidi would replace a Schweinsteiger or a Fellaini in midfield.

Imagine a French midfield 3 of Schneiderlin, Matuidi and Pogba

would be quite pointless to sign another creativeless box to box player, when we have Schneiderlin and TFM, I would also prefer Ander over him any day. 29 yo, we don't need french "ramirez"

we are after 4 players according to Mourinho. 2 confirmed, 3rd is not far away, so that leaves one more signing.

Ibrahimovic, Bailly, Matuidi and Mhikitaryan

I guess Matuidi will be the guy we sign after our Pogba chase inevitably falls off.

I know that, but I'd rather have Pogba for €100 million than Matuidi for €25 million. We need a Pogba type way more than a Matuidi type, and Pogba is younger and already a much better and more versatile midfielder than Matuidi.

Well, I'd imagine we're looking at more than 4. Likely it's four in addition to what we have, and then further signings (one or two) after current players are sold. Selling Mata might be the key to the Pogba deal. Matuidi likely the 4th he mentioned if the current rumours are true.

Not according to our manager though. Did you not watch his presser today?

It's not 100% just four players though, he hasn't said that'll be the end of the spending for sure.
No he didn't, but what he did say is we had 4 targets. 3 are in, and the 4th will be here before the 31st of August.

Yes I did. He said he can relax after the four signings, and then try to look at more options later in the summer when deciding which players will leave (Mata etc). Matuidi could be the fourth. Pogba could be an on-going discussion for a few weeks, due to the complexity of the deal.

Although this may seem a little disappointing, trust our manager. He knows what we need 100000x more than any of us does. I mean, it's Jose fecking Mourinho!

We are after 4 positions, he said, not necessarily 4 players. I mean, atleast 4 players, but the number might rise.

Please no. He's a decent midfielder but not the type we need. He's clumsy and the lack of technical ability is frightening. Plus he's 29, no thanks.

Meh.

Mourinho's transfer record is not that special.

He also let a lot of very good players go at Chelsea. Players that could be more than useful to them now (De Bruyne, Lukaku, Bertrand).

I do like Matuidi though and it would be a bit of a coup in a way. We are signing high class players considering we are not in the CL. He is a bit the wrong age though considering we have Carrick and Schweiny.

Ah sorry, I must have missed this bit.

All good. It's all up in the air anyway, considering we're basing the discussion on a few tweets by a random Frenchman and guarded comments by the manager. Happy with Matuidi if he pans out. Will trust Jose knows what's what in the coming months.

We fecking need creativity in the middle of the pitch. Especially with Rooney playing in 10.

I actually quite like Matuidi and always do whenever I watch him play. Yes he is no Pogba (totally different type of player) but he always looks good whenever I watch PSG and France, gets up and down the pitch and scores and creates a few also, I wouldn't class him as technically brilliant but he is certainly not limited.
25m euros is a fair price I guess considering he turned 29 two months back. Pogba is my dream but if we cant sign the cream like Pogba, Kroos or even Kante then I would like someone like him as opposed to playing Fellaini or older perma crocked slows asses like Carrick and BFS. We need legs in our midfield.
