Blaise Matuidi

Why do you think it's from one or the other?

From what the press are saying, it is quite clear Edd and Mourinho want to make a big signing. I doubt signing Matuidi will mean that we not going for Pogba.

So we'd have Schneiderlin, Matuidi, Pogba, Herrera, Schweinstiger, Carrick and Rooney as midfield choices? Bloody hell

Absolutely no chance this is true with France still being in the euros.

They've given permission for him to go to England, that's public record. Belgium did the same with a player that was sold during the euros

Belgium let Batshuayi do it with Chelsea last round.

I doubt the credibility too but in all I wouldn't mind either way. He definitely possesses that box-to-box grit we need in midfield, as well as some legs that can actually function, but his limitations on the ball partnered with Rooney mean we'd need a very good holding midfielder on the ball. Unless he can play the no.6 role.

Well if we're planning on 433...

Carrick won't be a full time starter.

When we last won the European cup we had Carrick, Scholes, Hargreaves, Anderson and Fletcher. Giggs could play there too.

France to England and back is pretty quick and they don't play again until Thursday, you'd think he was trekking to the Antarctic on foot the way some are reacting.

I don't care one way or the other about this transfer, he's a great athlete but a bit of a Jack of all trades master of none CM.

I'd imagine the squad were given today off after yesterdays win.

If he is flying to England he'll be back by end of the day.

Yes, but I don't think that a free day is used for travelling or that a coach allows the player to travel to another country, even when your back the same day.

Schweinsteiger and Carrick are in possibly their last 1-2 seasons they'll be rotational players and relied upon in case of injuries. It's still not clear if Rooney will play in midfield - it's pure speculation at best. Knowing Jose Rooney would more likely be tried in the #10 reflecting somehow Oscar for Chelsea.

That leaves Herrera, Blind, Schneiderlin, new CM say Matuidi for 2 positions. Wouldn't be surprised if Jose bins either Blind or Schneiderlin. Both are a bit underwhelming but in the case of Blind he's an useful player to have while the latter is plain average.

Did Batshuayi leave the Belgian camp during the euros though? I didn't read much about his transfer but I know it was announced after Belgium were out - so I can only assume he signed the contracts after Belgium were out too.

tbf if those 7 are for 3 positions, it is not excess. Especially when Carrick is 34 and Schweini has fitness/issues. We may end up playing 60 matches in season.

My guess will be its either Chelsea or us. He doesn't fit Tottenhams transfer policy and Arsenal are bursting with midfielders. I think more likely to be Chelsea given their options and Contes been probably scouting the French team a fair bit during the Euros.

I don't get this mentality.......he's had a year......didn't impress. I cant think of (m)any senior players who had a mediocre season who then improved to a standard by which they where seen as good enough.

Evra and Vidic took 6 months but they joined mid season and from abroad. The likes of Ronaldo and other youngsters obviously improve. But players like schniderlin and fellaini and even berbatov.......who come in from premiership teams either hit the ground running.......or essentially fail. I think Blaize matuidi would be an instant upgrade on Schniderlin, Fellaini even Basti and Herrera.

Lots of players have a poor first year and come on strongly despite already having played in the Prem, Teddy Sherringham for example had a pretty woeful first year at United, Andy Coles first couple of years were largely underwhelming etc etc. Theres probably a lot bunch of others that I'm far too lazy to try and remember.

No idea whether this is true, but it would make sense. He'd very much be a 'win now' signing. For all the talk around him, I think Mourinho knows he needs a competitive team pretty bloody quickly. which you'd expect Matuidi to contribute to. And he'd be an upgrade on most of our current midfielders.

Meh not a fan. 29 and think ligue 1 made him look better than he is.

Probably Chelsea instead of nainggolan. If true. Could maybe see lpool being in there too

Fosu-Mensah, Pereira, Fellaini, Blind as well. Mata perhaps too.

Need to trim our squad down a bit.

But I left out Blind and Fellaini

Blind, Fellaini and Mata will be off, I suspect. Mensah will be used in defence.

United or Chelsea? I think Chelsea would make more sense currently, given that they need CMs for Contes system and he got rejected by Radja

I think he's a cracking player myself, so I'd be very happy and somewhat surprised if this goes ahead. In theory it doesn't even remotely impact our pursuit of Pogba either.

PSG just bought the Polish midfielder so i can see him moving on

I agree that Chelsea makes sense as Conte has been after a box to box for his system and after the Nainggolan failure there was talk of Witsel, but Matuidi would fit just as well. I think the theory it's us is the fact Raiola is his agent.

It kind of would though. He's a box to box player, the same as Pogba, and we're unfortunately stuck in a position where Rooney must always play on top of that.

The three of them wouldn't work unless Matuidi could play as a holding player.

A lot of Ligue 1 watchers have said he hasn't been the same since the injury before the Chelsea game and has been pretty bad since.

Why would we go for him over Kante?

I think it could be 'under the radar' signing for midfield I was talking about couple of days ago with my hand. He pretty much is Mou's midfielder too, isn't he? A bit like Ramires in a sense.
You might want to see someone about that.

Sheringham and Cole were excellent players while Schneiderlin had a solid seasons at Soton and is not that good anyway. He'll also be 27 in November. It's not like he's young player that will turn into something we have not seen so far.
