Blaise Matuidi

What's going on? We all want to buy a 29 years cm. We can't see that this policy of buying players in their late 20s (and even older, as it happens),is setting us back.
Just look at the age of the players Real Madrid sign, and how they've forged a settled team over the years. Look at the age of the players Atletico mostly brings in. That's why they're superior to Manchester United. They are smarter.
We didn't give game time to Pogba who was good enough, though you wouldn't have gleaned that from reading this forum at the time. Mensah isn't up to it, he's clearly better RB than Darmian even though it's not his natural position. No, according to this forum he needs a loan to the championship. There he can show us he's good enough for Manchester United.
Schweinsteiger on the other hand is a beast last season and vital player for years to come.
The football club is going backwards fast. How low do we want to go?
Valdes, Schweinsteiger, Falcao, diMaria et al. Looking for a ready made team is stupid. It won't win us trophies, not even in the short term.

Best user name ever!

He is a pretty good player and better then what we have probably, but I wouldn't be too keen on him. On the older side, but not good enough to offset that. Relies a lot on his athleticism, and the rest of our midfielders are old. If I had a choice I would probably get rid of carrick, fellaini, schweinsteiger and rooney all from the group of midfielders, keep schneiderlin as a squad player and herrera too, and then start from scratch basically. In that scenario, 1 like matuidi would be okay, alongside younger players. Like this though, we are adding someone soon to be 30 to a group of midfielders where 2 are mid 30's, and fellaini is late 20's while schneiderlin and herrera are both 26 or 27 I think. Just not the right age for our group, we need every midfielder we sign to be early 20's to revitalize that position.

Can't see us signing both.

And a midfield 3 of Rooney-Pogba-Matuidi would struggle to keep possession, move the ball forward, and would get exposed to counter attacks.

Jose said Rooney isn't going to play in midfield, he'd be stupid to do so. Rooney will play as a striker or be dropped imo. Also Pogba and Matuidi could be very good together if we got a more defensive midfielder behind them in a 433.

I honestly can't believe some of the posts in this thread. He's obviously class. His performances in the CL alone should make that apparent.

It's a bit like being given a free Mercedes or Rolls Royce. Obviously you really want the Rolls, but if you suddenly can't have it you would more than happily take the Mercedes.

Still though I want the Rolls.

If we signed both, the third midfielder would obviously be a more defensive one, like Schneiderlin

Schneiderlin Matuidi
----------Pogba
Mkhitaryan Zlatan Martial

Rooney won't ever be playing in midfield. Will either be played out wide, or up front.

Rooney out

Schneiderlin in

Then it's an almost perfectly balanced midfield, Pogba can go forward, matuidi is the box-box and schneiderlin sits deep.

We going with four french starting players and an all french midfield?

Schneiderlin doesn't have the passing range. He'll be a weak link and poor fit in that midfield. We need someone like Carrick or Schweinsteiger to dictate from deep and link midfield and defence.

Rooney out wide?
You need to watch Jose's PC then! He's clearly stated we've 2 FWs in Ibra and Rashford whose combined age gives us a perfect balance.
Rooney will be playing as a No10 which is part of a midfield 3.

Except that, Rooney is club's captain. So he'll be a guaranteed starter and if you listen to what Jose said about Rooney in his first PC, he'll be playing as a No10.

I've seen his press conference.

Did he say Rooney would be playing out wide?
Did he count Rooney as one of his STs?

This is what Jose said about Rooney,
However, something that will never change is the natural appetite to put the ball in the net. Maybe he is not a striker anymore, but he will never be a no.6 for me, he will never be someone playing 60 metres from the goal.

Anyway, don't want to derail the thread as it's not for Rooney discussion :).

Schneiderlin cannot play as the deepest midfielder. I don't know how many times people are going to need to bring this up but if you watched him at all during what was arguably his best season with Southampton, he was paired with Wanyama who was the more defensive of the pair. Morgan's a defensive box-to-box player in truth and as we saw last season, if he's not paired with someone else who can fully commit to defence and also dictate the play (Schweinsteiger, Carrick) problems arise. Matuidi would replace Schneiderlin if anything and Schweinsteiger or Carrick would also be part of the midfield if we were hoping for a fully functioning one. Schneiderlin just doesn't possess the skillset for the role. He's certainly not a DLP.

Yes. He says he will play up front, that could easily be on the right of Zlatan, or in a second striker type role.
Right is for Mkhi:). Second ST is more or less a No10 in 4231 system because we wouldn't be playing 442.
Anyway, we shall see what happens. Let's not derail Matuidi thread talking about Rooney's position.

Agree with this, I think having Schweinsteiger and Matuidi behind Pogba would have the perfect balance whilst Carrick can come in for Schweinsteiger.

Rooney will NOT start in midfield as already stated by Jose.

I don't think he will be as guaranteed to start as he was under LVG and moyes because they didn't have the balls to drop him,

Mourinho on the other hand is a different matter after all this is the guy that benched lampard and on occasion Terry...2 chelsea legends, he also benched Casillas a club legend whilst at Real. Rooney's starting position is by no means set in stone. He will start with rooney but if he's as crap as usual he will soon find himself benched finally.

Already answered that!

If he plays as a 10 then don't bother spending 100m on Pogba

You want Pogba, you play him as a 10

A midfield with Pogba and Rooney just can't work, it can't.

If Pogba needs to play deeper, you have performances like today, the boy has golden feet, but you want those feet dribbeling players and shooting unstopable balls at the goal

Don't really want the guy tbh. Can't see anything he offers that's particularly better than Schneiderlin. Much rather we give a player we've invested money already in a bit more time.

Him and William Carvalho were the best two defence midfielders for me in the tournament. Thought Carvalho just shades it as he is the better passer of the ball

If Matuidi is the 4th and last significant signing, would you (any of you reading) feel confident about winning the league?

I'd be for the Matuidi signing, but feel we'd still be lacking the 'star quality' in the team to make the difference

Hell fecking no.

Nope

We have star quality, but not in midfield.

Matuidi would improve us, but he won't bring the impact someone like Pogba would.

So I'd feel less confident. If we sign Pogba, I believe we'll win the league.

Zlatan Ibrahimovic has talked up former PSG teammate Blaise Matuidi to Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho.

France Football says while Matuidi's agent, Mino Raiola, has not spoken directly to Mourinho about Matuidi, Ibrahimovic has championed the midfielder to United officials.

Reporter Nabil Djellit told L'Equipe 21: "I've inquired, (Unai) Emery does not at all count on Matuidi.

"He's brought Krychowiak, one of his men based in Sevilla. I was told that there was no direct contact between Raiola and Manchester United. However, they also say that Zlatan has directly tested the ground for him.

"Indeed, Manchester becomes a strong possibility. Matuidi is smart, he knows he may be at the end of his cycle with PSG. He is deep in thought as well.

"In his place I'd go. This is not a regression. Mourinho is rebuilding the club. Matuidi still has an outstanding CV. He would make a huge impact at United."
