Television Better Call Saul | Includes Breaking Bad Spoilers

Even with all the criticism, this show is seriously overrated. Imagine if you haven't seen BB and had no prior knowledge of who Saul Goodman was. Would you be so patient with the series?

But then again, I thought BB while brilliant, was also overhyped beyond reason.

Blasphemy!!!!

Seriously though I agree BCS isn't amazing but it is relatively enjoyable...for what it is. If I hadn't seen BB then I agree I probably wouldn't be as patient with it but I could still watch it.

As for BB, it's probably my favourite TV series (admittedly I haven't watched a lot that I probably should have to give me a more rounded opinion). It just felt like how GTA would be if it was ever turned for a games series into a show (The outrageous characters, themes of drugs and violence and the general aesthetic of how it is shot)

Thought that was another good episode.

Do we think Chuck
is dead?
Yeah I enjoyed that episode.
I had the thought that Jimmy's actions would indirectly cause Chucks death toward the beginning of the episode. I was thinking more meltdown and heart attack than smashing his face on a worktop though which makes me wonder whether they might go down the route of Chuck being comatose/critical condition from the fall.

I like it, but the storytelling has all the pace of Martin DeMichelis after 20 pints and a kebab (or whatever the Argentinian equivalent is).

Finally a good episode.

Hope he's dead. We might finally get around to Saul next season if so.

Next episode says Finale in the title?

Thought that was a really good episode.

The thud of Chuck's head hitting the counter was oddly satisfying.

Ultimately I think being a spin-off from Breaking Bad is a double-edged sword; it brought a ready made audience and kept people interested because of the association, but also it's given an expectation of a certain type of show and drawn inevitable but perhaps unfair comparisons.

If this was just another show, without that connection of where Saul ultimately ends up, people would probably be more accepting of what it is.

The main complaint about BCS has been it's pacing and the fact that he's still Jimmy McGill, but that's only because everyone wants him to just become Saul asap and see essentially a load of scenes like he had in BB.

Take this show entirely on its own merit, without that expectation of each episode being a 60 minute extrapolation of his 5 minute scenes in BB, and I reckon it comes out a lot more favourably.

It's the nature of the beast with prequels I guess, and the name of the show only made it worse.

Not sure I'd agree with that - the only reason I'm still watching it week on week is due to my attachment to the characters from BB and seeing the BB cameos (which I think are a mistake to put in because they distract a lot from the show). The pacing is so painfully slow that I couldn't imagine myself being interested otherwise.

I'd also argue the problem isn't the Jimmy or Mike scenes, they're fine, it's every other character, like Chuck and Kim, who I don't give a shit about.

Still, last night's episode was excellent, it's a shame we don't get more like that.

Why are people complaining about the pacing so much. What little I saw of BB was just as slowly paced, if not slower. But that was probably saved by the cinematography in BB whereas it's quite average on BCS.

See I agree that the Chuck and Kim characters feel irrelevant and we don't give a shit, but that's because we know they're not around long term because they weren't in Breaking Bad.

Yea there's only one episode left of the season.

It didn't put Finale in the title at the end of the first season though. They're definitely going for a third season?

Nah, they will still need to establish what his illness actually is first before killing him off. And his rivalry with Saul doesn't feel like it's run it's course yet

I don't think they need to establish what his illness is specifically - it's already been established that it's completely psychosomatic.

I don't really get the complaints in this thread. I'm not just waiting for him to become Saul, I'm enjoying the build up a lot even if it is at a slow pace.

BB was slow paced but when it picked up the pace it became brilliant. It was always a good build up. Here we're building up to... The last episode a few years down the line?

maybe, on the other hand though I really like Nacho even though he'll obviously bite the bullet at some point.

Great episode. I was rubbing my hands together during that court scene where Chuck was made to look a fool.
It doesn't sound like many folks on here are enjoying but for me I can't get enough.

I do strangely enjoy it, even though nothing happens...

I'm hoping we get to see Mike end up meeting Gus Fring, and Huellworking with Saul...

The series should end with the first time we see him in Breaking Bad...

For some reason I expected Gus to walk over and sit with Mike when he was alone in the diner, tell him he knows what he did etc. I'd like him to show up at some point.

Internet nerd speculation about the season finale:

On Reddit, Twitter user @Sirena6783 is identified as the first to catch that when you take the first letter of each episode title — "Switch," "Cobbler," "Amarillo," "Gloves Off," "Rebecca," "Bali Ha'i," "Inflatable," "Fifi," "Nailed" and "Klick" — you get the letters S, C, A, G, R, B, I, F, N and K.

Unscramble that, and here's what you get: "Fring's Back."

That would be pretty cool

Without giving anything away, in terms of Saul's storyline I am guessing the finale may well centre on his partnership (working one at least) with Kim splitting up, as she realises she can't work with him, and maybe a lead-in to Saul starting to work with Mike ?

I didn't understand why Saul didn't ask Mike or anyone else to go down and sort out the copy shop issue. Doesn't really fall in with how sly he normally is even in panicked situations.

Really enjoyed the last episode if only they made the other episodes as interesting. Focusing too much on Kim and Chuck imo. We want to see more Saul Goodman.

I'm really enjoying it too.

That last scene in the copy shop was hard to watch and shook me up a bit. Its a great story though, as is Mike's.

I think it is the other way around. Kim is slowly accepting Saul's ways and you can sense that she is becoming less and less ethical.

Also, the episode was decent at best. The Photo Copier thing should have hit Jimmy even before Kim pointed it out. For someone who is supposedly portrayed as being sly, that was a big miss. And you could sense that something would happen to Chuck after that court incident. Sorry, I just watched the episode now :D

Loving Mike btw. I watch the show mostly coz of him.
I am worried that even though that driver might not identify him, he might identify his car which will leave the season finale on a cliff hanger. I expect the finale to be just as quickly paced as this episode if it wants to progress. I read somewhere about Gus being introduced here, but I think it's probably too soon. This show is probably gonna last 5 seasons just like BB.

19 episodes in and it looks like something outside of the most mundane character development you'll ever see, is finally happening! The show is being propped up by everyone's love of Breaking Bad because in the previous 18 episodes nothing significant has actually happened. Saul seemed a great idea for a show at first, but in hindsight it seems like Mike would have been 10x better.

Better call Saul: Suits with the Breaking Bad production team.

Agreed. They could have gone down almost any path story-wise for Mike and it wouldn't have seemed unbelievable.

What are we expecting from the season finale then people?!

Chuck aftermath, Possible Fring appearance etc
